Review of Titan A.E.

Titan A.E. (2000)
6/10
Visually stunning mediocrity
5 August 2021
It's difficult to believe that this movie is from 2000. It combines traditional 2D animation and 3D CGI in a way that only few movies or series truly mastered, even today. Especially that sequence close to the finale with the reflecting spiky ice ring was astoundingly beautiful. Of course, it's no surprise that Fox once again cut the budget when they had something awesome going, so unfortunately we're left with only Titan A. E. from this studio.

The rest of the movie is honestly just mediocre. The story is bland. The characters are bland and at times inconsistent; the protagonist for example is in one scene an ace pilot and in the next an ace mechanic, even though both came out of nowhere. The dialogues are bland, and sometimes make no sense. "I need one clear shot, don't lose them!", says... the pilot to the gunner? The opening sequence is fairly uninspired and certainly won't knock your socks off. The voice acting is fine but not exactly Oscar material. The soundtrack is... yeah, let's not talk about it.

What I generally don't get is the purpose of this movie. It's too dark and edgy to be appropriate for young children, yet too silly to attract older teens. I'm sure there were a lot of fourteen-year-olds that loved this movie -- some action, including *gasp* blood; some romance, including a non-graphic *gasp* dressing scene; general rebellion against authority figures -- but they don't exactly make a sizeable demographic.

All in all it's pretty to watch. The latter half even is interesting. The visuals are amazing and the edgy tone is nice, but the overall concept is a bit lost and the rest is just too generic. I'm quite sure I'll never watch this movie again, but the time wasn't entirely wasted.
