Coach (1989–1997)

Even Better Than I Remembered It

I recently bought the entire series of "COACH" on DVD and I have to be honest here--this might be the best sitcom I have seen in a long while. "Coach" is right up there with "Cheers" and "Seinfeld" in the annals of Greatest Sitcom Ever Made.

Craig T. Nelson is wonderful as the good-hearted-but-cantankerous Coach Hayden Fox. Jerry Van Dyke (Dick Van Dyke's little brother) is wonderful as Hayden's assistant coach, the laughably frugal Luther Van Dam. Bill "Patrick" Fagerbakke really shines as Dauber, Shelley Fabares is excellent as Coach's newswoman' girlfriend Christine Armstrong. Howard Burley, who is excessively corny and yet oddly likable, is another grand addition to the show.

Some people might say "Coach" is too predictable and formulaic. I disagree. Especially in the decade of the "single camera" comedy that takes itself too seriously and pretentiously like "Modern Family" shows like "Coach" are a breath of fresh air.

I remember reading seven years ago there was a "Coach" reboot in the cards. But, unfortunately, it got benched. ABC, I read, felt the project was "too dated." What a pity! I would have loved to have seen the further exploits of Coach Hayden Fox, a true American and one of Minnesota's finest.
