Anti Male pantomime
13 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is an anti male film dressed up as a movie about 'real' men.

What starts off as an accurate portrayal of macho working class men, soon becomes unrealistic through its incessant need to show these guys acting at their worst. They stir each other up until someone loses their cool, usually in a violent way, they make up and it happens all over again. It goes on like this throughout the entire movie. They take the worst of human behavior and repeat it endlessly, passing it off as supposed 'toxic masculinity,' a made-up term to denigrate men, as though they have some disease.

Everyone is capable of being an A-hole. Some people are, both male and female while most people aren't. Here, there's little showing the range of emotions that all people have. Sure they laugh, make up but then it's back to the escalation and over the top conduct again. The entire film is stuck in a 5 minute loop.

This came from a play and we all know who the audience is; predominantly the upper middle far-left classes. This wouldn't have even made it to the stage, let alone the screen if it didn't appeal to the anti-male mob. This film will be weaponized to demonize men even further.

The daughter goes from a carbon copy of the men at the beginning to victim pretty quickly. Even the wife, who is supposedly the devil, never shows it. This is how the men see her. So it must be the man's point of view of her, not her actual character. She even becomes a strong force of good by the end. Male bad. Female good.

These guys are caricatures. Even the flashback to the dads in the 80's shows men at their absolute worst. It's true that kids were hit back in the day. I grew up in that period so I fell foul to that too. Not only hit by our fathers, but our mothers, grandparents and teachers too. It wasn't just from men. It was the whole culture.

The writer knows what working class people are like, or a small portion of them, but he's taken the very worst of it to appeal to a certain audience in order to make his career. In today's world, it's the only way to get things made. Yet, even the young guy from the upper classes is an A-hole too. It's laughable by this point. It's more than caricature. It's a farce.

I wanted to like it. I like the actors but after fifteen minutes it was all too ingratiating. Frankly, it was insulting. Don't be fooled. This movie is sexist.
