Hitchhike! (1974 TV Movie)
5/10
The year before Phyllis headed to San Francisco...

Warning: Spoilers
It's not a very bright idea when Cloris Leachman, driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco, picks up a hitchhiker out of the blue, and a stop halfway up make things a bit more difficult for her when she makes love to the stranger, Michael Brandon, out of the blue. It had a lovely picnic on the beach and she's had a little bit of wine, but you get the feeling that her character isn't really filled with much gray matter when it comes to affairs of the heart, already having had an argument with her husband on the phone in the opening scene.

This is another one of those women in peril films, a staple in movies ever since they began. Cloris Leachman did a bunch of beads for TV, working almost non-stop between her recurring appearance on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and her appearances in Mel Brooks comedies. Every movie and TV fan has quoted either a Phyllis line or one of her funny Mel Brooks quotes, but a good majority of these TV movies are deservedly forgotten.

Brandon is seeing early in the film stabbing a woman, and his behavior while in the car with Leachman is suspicious to say the least. There are cut-offs to her sister worrying about why she is not there and the investigation into the murder of the woman, so the camera is not on these two all the time. It's a predictable little melodrama with okay if not great performances, another view of the brooding and emotionally troubled young man, thrilling a time but pretty easy to forget.
