An angry but likable Yank finds love in Newtown
19 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is a charming indie rom-com, which follows the usual rom-com trajectory in a number of interesting ways.

It's set in Newtown and Sydney's inner-west and stars American actor RJ Mitte (of Breaking Bad fame) as Travis, who's angry about having cerebral palsey, about not having a girlfriend, at all the idiots he meets at his cleaning job etc. Etc. Luckily a cheery blind Samoan, Gordo (played by Italia Hunt) becomes his flatmate and encourages him to get out more, especially to the pub, where he meets Sunny (Philippa Northeast) a cute young woman who wants to be a mechanic, but whose pub-owning/DJ boyfriend (Sam Reid) wants her to be a comedian and get a job on his breakfast radio show.

It's an enjoyable fantasy, with lots of humour, the usual pitfalls along the way to success and true love, and even an appearance from veteran comedian Barry Humphries. Radha Michell also appears as Travis' boss. (Plus any film featuring a Camera Obscura song must have its heart in the right place!)
