The Witcher (2019– )

The amazing Henry Cavill shines bright in great adaption of legendary fantasy books

In short, I would recommend The Witcher to pretty much everyone. It excels in its layered portrayal of its characters and the colorful and double-edged depictions of the relationships between them. The world of the series is vast and filled with lore. The action is a major strong point and the monsters we face throughout the series look amazing and are both interesting and terrifying.

The Witcher will most likely remind you a lot of A Game of Thrones, and while they do share some similarities, The Witcher is far from a derivative clone of the great hit series. The Witcher does also, as stated previously, have a great world, great characters, and great action. Something that makes The Witcher different is the great relationships. Especially between our two main characters, whose father and daughter relationship is great to watch and see develop.

The great acting is something to behold in this show. Freya Allan does a great job as Ciri. As does Anya Chalotra as Yennefer. Someone who probably will go under the radar a bit is Joey Batey as Jaskier. Not only does he deliver musically, being an integral part of the great music in the show, he also manages to deliver the comedic moments gracefully while still keeping his character grounded and likable. The biggest acting display though comes from Henry Cavill as Geralt. He fits the character perfectly. He says so much with so few words using very small and subtle facial expressions and body language. I've become quite the fan of him while watching the show and his love for the books, the games, and the character in general really does shine through, on the screen, and off the screen.

Action is of course something important in a show like this and The Witcher totally delivers on that front. The action is fast-paced, hard-hitting, intense, violent, and brutal. The fight scenes are very impressive. They are shot beautifully and in a way where it is easy to follow what is happening. The monsters are a big part of what makes the action great. There is a great variety of monsters with various characteristics that differentiate them from each other and makes each battle unique, interesting, and enjoyable. The CGI is seamless and they truly look beautiful.

The show is admittedly not flawless. The plot in season one can be difficult to follow sometimes and both season one and two has some episodes with less content than others and some storylines that are less interesting and enjoyable than others.

The Witcher is still, to summarize, a great show with few flaws. I've grown fond of the characters and I've become a fan of especially Henry Cavill due to his amazing acting performance. The world and the characters are interesting, the action and the monsters are great, and the plot is intriguing and compelling. You should absolutely give The Witcher a try. It has become one of my favorite shows and I can't wait for the next season to arrive.
