Don't Look Up (2021)
6/10
Completely effective political satire though depressing for this viewer
26 December 2021
"Don't Look Up" marks the encouraging evolution of a former comic film maker branching out into satire.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence stars as a meek scientist and his doctoral candidate who discover that a comet is hurdling towards the Earth. Unfortunately, they are confronted with a tone-deaf media (portrayed by morning hosts Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry) and an even more incompetent president (Meryl Streep).

It's meant to be an allegory for global warming, but it touches on the anti-science views of Trumpism (and now the current Republican party), the unholy marriage between politics and industrial interests, and the short-term view of American politics. In terms of ambition, few films have even aimed this high ("Dr. Strangelove" and "Network" are the best examples) and it's hard to deny that this is really effective.

Considering Adam McKay is a former head writer of SNL who's made some very funny films, it's a little disappointing that the film wasn't packed with just a few more comic jabs.

Most people will enjoy this.

In terms of my personal experience, I found it depressing only because I'm not the kind of person who enjoys exposing myself to a lot of news when there are a lot of negative things happening to the US right now including people who ignore science. In this case, this film hit too close to home.
