THREE MONTHS
25 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Set among the lazy beaches of South Florida, "Three Months" is the story of Caleb, a gay teenager whose entire life comes to a stand-still as he waits for his HIV test results after an unfortunate one-night stand. In his own words, "I was sad and I liked that he was a total stranger." This is in contrast to the world around him that is in constant motion, as is evident by the wide shots encompassing the entire panorama.

Caleb is sarcastic, broken and very gay, and Troye Sivan provides the much needed warmth and nuances to the character. The movie is, but a projection of Caleb's inner demons, depicted beautifully by the desaturated frames and the melancholic music. But over the course of that one summer, the HIV scare might actually be what teaches him to mature as a person, that one needs to always move on.

And then in this contemporary piece enters Estha; Estha is quiet, Estha loves Taylor Swift, Estha belongs to a conservative Hindu family, Estha is basically the polar opposite of Caleb. And yet the times when the two characters are on screen together are the very best of the movie.

"Three months", in no way, is a piece of art. But again, it never preaches that it is one. The movie is a bit predictable, but that what makes it relatable. The movie is a bit chaotic at times and slow at others, but so is life. The supporting cast seems to be too generic and not have proper character development - but yet each one of them is able to leave a lasting impact by the sheer vulnerability each character radiates.

And at the end, "Three months" leaves a lot of things unsaid. But may be that was the plan all along - for the movie doesn't attempt to justify what its characters do or feel; it merely presents to us a screenshot over time - over three months of the life of a gay teenager in a lazy summer of 2011.
