A Wild West movie in rural Denmark
8 April 2022
Essentially a Wild West story of the new Marshall in town and the webs of deceit and danger he encounters, this is also a tale of dark marital abuse (and murder) with no good guy, only the promise that the most cunning will survive. A little thin throughout (like a short story adapted for the screen) it is still darkly enjoyable with hints of Fargo and fairytale in equal measure. Recommended? Yes, for the acting, the terrific cool cinematography and lighting. As a story it leaves a lot of questions unanswered but, if you can accept that, and the premise that only children have goodness left, there's an evening of grim entertainment to be had here, but not much that will move you or have you wishing for more.
