Dana (Kate Beckinsale) and David (Mel Raido) move from Brooklyn to a once-grand southern mansion with their 5-year-old son looking for a fresh start. But Dana's discovery of a secret room unleashes unexplainable events that test her sanity and slowly reveal the home's terrifying past.
Going in, I didn't expect a great deal from this film, mostly because of the unfavourable reception the film has received. However, I found this to be a stylish and fairly well-executed thriller. The storyline is intriguing. The cinematography is often stunning, making the most of the house's dark and eerie corners. The sound design is impressive. Beckinsale delivers a taut and gripping performance. Overall this film not only exceeded my expectations but also surprisingly surpassed them. I was in the mood for an undemanding, entertaining thriller and this one delivered just that for me.
