Dirk bogarde, charlotte rampling, both professionals. Max is the porter at the opera hotel. When a young couple checks in, max and the wife lock eyes, and recognize each other immediately. Now we're in flashback to war time. Max, the german ss soldier, had a cruel, odd master/slave relationship with a girl in the concentration camp. Now years later, the girl has checked into max's hotel, and is the only link to his days of doing very bad things. Max's circle of friends are always on the lookout for any witnesses or links to their past. It's very well done, if sometimes hard to watch. A period piece of the late 1950s, when nazi soldiers were being put on trial. Not sure why we spent so much time watching the muscular male ballet dancer perform for the nazi soldiers... it didn't seem to add anything to the story. Lucia's husband is the conductor to the opera, so we hear quite a bit of that also. Maybe to show there is beauty in the world, in spite of the atrocities of war ? Pretty dark ending. Showing on hbo.
