Review of Shutter

Shutter (II) (2004)
7/10
Overload with Scares but a lot of them works
31 July 2022
It was a lot scarier than I expected tbh. I wasn't really impressed with the first 20 minute or so, I felt the characterization could have been better. But after a certain jumpscare, the film just got a LOT scarier for me. The film overall has TONS of jumpscares that worked for me, I actually had to turn the lights on while watching the movie. And I've never done that, even when I'm watching a horror movie I try to turn the lights off. So that is something!

However I do think the over-reliance of jump scares might be the reason the film won't hold up after some thoughts or rewatches. Of course the scares did work most of the time, but the fact is that there were so many jumpscares, and the tension is relieved too easily at times. I don't know whether I would consider this movie actually 'scary' after a few months and years. But there are some creepy imagery & chilling monatge and great music that I do think will hold up, so I don't think the film would completely lose its steam as time passes. Some great shots including building su*cide, a public restroom, and the film overall just captures the 2000s vibe very well. I'm not a Thai but as an asian person I do appreciate the 2000s asian country vibe. There are some unexpected turns in the story, so go into this without spoilers, it is not some mind-blowing twist or anything, but getting spoiled will effect your first viewing experience so...

This really could go down to 6-7, or go up to 9 as time passes. Right now, 8/10 seems fair to me. Now I'm very interested in The Medium, which was directed by the same guy who did Shutter.
