The Retreat (2021)
7/10
Non pretentious and reasonably entertaining horror

I'm a bit surprised at the low rating here on IMDb (4.7 at the moment I write this), since in my opinion it's really not such a bad movie. It's in the well known vein of youngsters staying in a secluded cottage and then being abducted and tortured by a few sadistic locals. But here the torturers have at least some (albeit weird and farfetched) motivation for their actions, instead of the usual anonymous torturers-just-for-the-kick-of-it.

The pace is high, there's some fine suspense as well as some brutal violence, and as a viewer you team up with the two sympathetic girls in their desperate efforts to outwit the captors. For the rest the movie is a bit one-dimensional, there are no complicated twists and turns, and after hardly 80 minutes the ending doesn't even provide the usual ultimate jump-scare with the suggestion that the evil isn't over yet. In short: a not too pretentious, rather straightforward and reasonably entertaining horror-thriller.
