Charles Marquis Warren's excellent stuff
5 February 2023
This western is just in the middle of Charles Marquis Warren's career, he the western great specialist. The story, scheme, brings nothing really unusual, surprising or new, but it is splendidly made, with a Richard Egan as the lead character. I repeat, there is nothing really unexpected, unpredictable, and that's the only flaw which I can notice in this well made, tense, little RKO studios western, with an admirable atmosphere, poignant, enjoyable. We can appreciate the supporting characters, a perfect cast, and the settings, this desert town....we can enjoy here the talent of this western specialist who was for me just after Delmer Daves, John Sturges or John Ford. And what a pleasure to have De Forest Kelley, the villain with a baby gentle face; unlike many more villains who had on the contrary rough, tough faces.
