A sensitive and thoughtful film about life of two street sweepers
22 March 2023
In Madrid, with Rosario and Milagros , two youngsters whose lives are overshadowed by the tragedies of the past, are the attractive protagonists, two street sweepers, who have known each other since they were girls, this story begins so full of secrets and contradictions in their lives, because, although Rosario insists on getting rid of her faithful co-worker, destiny, always capricious and uncertain, he will end up uniting them. At the beginning of the film, we see these two women together with their co-worker Walrus at the beginning of a trip to the town of Milagros. Then Rosario recalls the reunion with Milagros. The two friends go through two life trajectories: one towards nothing more cruel, from a cheerful and vital attitude, and the other, towards an expectant future from a redeemed life and forgiveness in the middle. Rosario (Malena Alterio) has an older sister who lives in Barcelona, married with two children. Rosario studied until the first year of her degree and lives in one of the most beautiful houses in the Argüelles neighborhood. She worked as an assistant in the Edificio España although she is ashamed of this job, since when she meets Milagros (Esperanza Pedreño), a classmate from high school, she lies to her saying that she is a bank employee and that she is going to get a permanent contract. Milagros drives her uncle's taxi in the morning, but she doesn't get any benefit from it, since she has no interest in finding clients. Rosario loses her job due to her lateness and lack of energy at work and Milagros's uncle prohibits her from driving the taxi due to the lack of customers. They are placed on a cleaning contract from the City Hall. Their friendship is so close that the classmates think they are lesbians. Walrus (Antonio de la Torre), a simple boy, approaches Rosario with the intention of flirting with her.

This is an perceptible and enjoyable portrait of these two street sweepers goes deep, and goes well, with an excellent narrative, an endless number of extreme internal situations that, more than reaching your heart, end up cutting it apart . A dramedy (drama y comedy) about the unfortunate lives of two youths who hold non-healed wounds due to a painful past : Rosario and Milagros and, even though one puts a good face on everything and the other plays tough, they are unable to avoid a subsequent tragedy. It rises as the drama makes an appearance, after a hesitant start in which a certain monotony , both expository and interpretive is about to throw the viewer to tragic happenings. The film does not hide the negative part of reality, but it shows that it is possible to be happy if you want to. It advances like a sad comedy and with little grace until, in a couple of dramatic turns, the drama takes over the screen and in that last third, successful, intense, shocking sequences follow one another.

The motion picture was professionally directed by Ángeles González-Sinde . She is a prestigious screenwriter who was even Minister of Culture. Sinde has directed a few but decent films , such as : El Comensal (2022) , Una palabra tuya (2008 , ¿Y a mí quién me cuida? (2007), Madrid 11M : Todos íbamos en ese tren (2004), La suerte dormida (2003). Rating : 6.5/10 .In any case, a very stimulating exercice of style which displays awesome acting .
