How not to write a script...
5 July 2023
I'm an absolute fan of romantic comedies, from Bringing Up Baby to When Harry met Sally and many others; I've seen countless examples of it. One day, browsing the trusted streaming platform, I come across this flick. Immediately, it caught my attention.

It started off well, relatively interesting location and characters, decent cinematography, all good, until suddenly, the dialogue starts. I swear, at that moment I thought "this is not believable, no one talks like that, not even the most pretentious of the pretentious". Of course, dialogues in movies don't copy reality, they are inspired by it; if we took the dialogues of wonderful movies, such as "Casablanca" or "Goodfellas" and brought them to real life, they might not sound believable either, but they work incredibly well on screen.

Why doesn't this movie work? Well, the dialogue is lazy, in his eagerness to make us empathize with his characters, his screenwriter filled us with long and empty conversations, completely eliminating a possible subtext. As a result, we get histrionic performances... Let's just say it, the performances are horrible, precisely because they are not acting, they are reciting.

Anyway, I don't want to take away the value it has just because I hate it. Moreover, if you like writing, it's an excellent example of how not to do it, so, let's look at the bright side of it.

PS: I don't understand several tens here, it's quite suspicious.
