could be one of the best trek series ever, now with carol kane!
3 September 2023
This iteration of star trek is pretty recent, having just finished its 2nd season. But i can tell already it's a classic. There are, at this time, 4 star trek series running simultaneously (2 live action and 2 animated), and i have watched them all. Lower decks gets points for really going out of their way to address canon and events and people we've all heard of before. Yet, it's addressed with a tongue in cheek style that's very refreshing. The recent crossover episode with a character from lower decks time traveling to the live action strange new worlds was pretty fun and well done.

The group responsible for production clearly loves the show and, while addressing new issues (who knew the gorn were supposed to be scary?), still has the ability to take these mostly well known characters and flesh them out, give them backstories (uhura is a standout) and so much reverence and humor that it's hard not to love the show. One of the later episodes this season had everyone in an entire quadrant singing and dancing about their feelings due to a spatial anomaly. Yes, even the klingons.

The addition of carol kane to the show was fantastic, in my opinion. From the time early on when she was andy kaufman's bride sitka on taxi, through the addams family and most especially beating the crap out of bill murray with a toaster as the ghost of christmas present in scrooged, i've been a fan for a long time. She fits in so well - it's refreshing to see her here as a kind of guinan character who's lived on earth for hundreds of years. Brilliant casting.

Highly recommended.
