Had the pleasure of playing this game on an emulator and it was super fun. I cannot believe that its score here is kind of low as it has good graphics, fun game play and is just awesome! I played on easy mode and suffice to say it was still kind of hard, but once I started getting the hang of the combat I did better. That first level boss was like beating me there at the beginning. Once I got the hang of the combat and doing the fast dash though I went through this thing pretty well; that is, until the stage 20 boss! Yikes!
The story quite frankly does not make much sense. Something about a terrorist organization and a battle for control of it. Some dude who was an eagle or something was the leader, then some tiger guy took control, but the eagle guy came back as a kid, and became good or something. They have a scroll up during the beginning, but otherwise you do not get much in the way of storytelling, but hey, just know you got to stop the tiger dude and a whole lot of bosses!
The game play takes some getting use to. Every time you die, you get to pick your weapons and each one has their benefits. The flame gun does a lot of damage early on, but some later stage bosses are not fazed by it at all. The homing weapon is the one I used the most as it pinpoints the boss's weak points, but every weapon was used because that level 20 boss I had to use the lance weapon! Managed to get through this game without using save states, which I was proud of myself for, but unfortunately, the level 20 boss came along and I had to use them. Why is 20 so hard? It has five different stages to it, all of which have full health! The final phase is the worst, an underwater stage that renders the homing weapon, the fire weapon and the super dash useless! Still, I did beat the final boss without using save states; seriously, the only boss in the game that gave me a lot of trouble was that level 20 one!
So this game was amazing fun, I had been wanting to play it as I see it on a lot of top lists, like obscure games for the Sega that are a lot of fun. I enjoyed it a lot, so much action going on and when you can get through two or three stages and defeat three bosses in a row you feel a sense of accomplishment.
