An enjoyable twist on family comedy-drama
20 October 2023
I may have enjoyed this more than others because, as a New York kid raised among Queens Italian relatives, this film hit the mark for me. I have LIVED through many of those Italian banquet hall wedding and confirmation events, and family dinners... they are exactly as depicted, and Ray Romano nails the blue collar, overwhelming personalities with a refreshing candor.

The main story involves first love for a shy kid, living his father's dream, and caught between pleasing others and finding himself. It's a sweet and quaint story, lovingly and humorously told, deeply human, with a surprising twist or two. Romano, Laurie Metcalf, Jacob Ward, and Sadie Stanley, are all excellent as the leads, but the real star is the amusing look at the family culture that is at the heart of this world. I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
