Review of Echo

Echo (2023–2024)
5/10
Decent with excellent acting, but also boring and weird writing
10 January 2024
Marvel still have no real clue what they are doing or where they want to go. This show is not bad, it is actually pretty good for the most part and the acting from mostly unknown is excellent. Sound design, production value, potential and directing mostly good. I also think they set up the character of Echo in a good way, and Alaqua Cox as the titular protagonist is very good and very likeable.

The first problem here is the writing. Story wise this leave a lot to be desired and it feels dragged out. This could easily been one longer episode of 1,5 hrs (or less). Sure it is okay to know this world and these character, but it is also not necessary. Episode 2 (and 3) are mainly just one long dragged out nothingness - 80min of almost pointless drivel.

Since this is only good/decent, but never is elevated to anything more and since the writing is so off, I have a hard time really getting into this show.

My main issue though is that the writing make this a chore to watch. This is boring. Not bad, not horrible, but boring. Already in the second episode I find myself fast forward, and I kept doing so for most of the show. Just get to it already, or if you really want to drag things out, then you need to do a better job at it and make the writing really stick.

I give this a 5/10. Huge step forward compared to SheHulk and Secret Invasion which both were among the worst TV ever made, but this is too boring to be anything special.

Marvel need to hire everyone involved with Agents of Shield and let them do all their TV. AoS is still the best Marvel has ever done because the showrunners knew what they were doing, here with this show not so much...
