Seven stars. I actively disagree with the reframing of the Hinzelmann origin. It follows from the decision to make the show into a polemic against the European
colonization of the Americas, and leaves us with a far less interesting story,
in my opinion. That said, the Lakeside stuff is very well executed, although
Shadow's coat is clearly WAY to light for serious winter. Then it's off on
more tangents. But Tyr is a good tangent. So is the Salim/Ibis stuff, and the
whole Chicago wake sequence. The return to Lakeside brings us to the mystery
of the town. That's a great hang-point for the end of the episode, but it
brings up another unrelenting problem the show has. It skimps too much on the
story from the book in order to introduce tangents. If the writers had paid
more attention to their source, they would have had a better story. As it is,
there are too many times when the creativity doesn't pay off in the
storytelling. 5 March 2024.
