Haunted Gold

John Mason and Janet Carter receive an anonymous letter telling them to travel to a ghost town that has an abandoned mine. There they befriend each other as they try to find out why they were sent the letters. They soon find themselves targets of Joe Ryan and his gang who are looking for the hidden gold inside the abandoned mine. They are helped by the mysterious Phantom of the mine who has his own plans.

It's odd to see John Wayne in a ghost/horror-ish setting as it's a genre he's usually alien to, but he seems to be having fun in this enjoyable western that has some good atmosphere, the usual sinister characters lurking around, eyes looking through slats, tunnels, a comic sidekick and a phantom. It moves fast and keeps one's attention. There's some racial slurs towards the sidekick but it was 1932. There's a terrific cable car sequence - it's exciting. Wayne's horse Duke comes to the rescue when Wayne is hanging on a rope for dear life.
