A Countess from Hong Kong
14 April 2024
I had only seen a Charles Chaplin film ("The Kid") as a little boy, by the time "A Countess from Hong Kong" was released. I still had no idea who Chaplin really was. I saw it just because I liked Sophia Loren. Marlon Brando was also there, and Tippi Hedren, Angela Scoular and Margaret (Rutherford)... I found the movie quite strange, stagey, claustrophobic... Then, in 1977 I saw "Monsieur Verdoux", and loved it.

Twenty years later I went to the film school in Cuba and watched all the Chaplin movies that I could find, and became acquainted with his style, his humour, his "mise-en-screen"...

So when I recently watched "Countess" again, around 2005, it was something else... I found everything so natural, so Chaplinesque, I enjoyed it.
