The First Omen did it much better but still worth a watch.

As a disclaimer, I feel it's necessary to state that I'm an atheist so religious horror doesn't do much for me usually. I've enjoyed a few I've seen over the years but I'm usually pretty indifferent about them. However, I saw The First Omen earlier this year and actually quite enjoyed it so I figured I'd give Immaculate a watch.

Overall, I think The First Omen did just about everything better than this, from the story to the cinematography and everything in between. But this movie still had enough things going for it that compelled me to finish it and I'm glad I did.

First off, I think Sydney Sweeney does an okay job acting as the lead in this, although I did start to grow tired of her constant screaming lol. She's been pretty good in everything I've seen her in, especially Euphoria, and I'd be open to watch her act in future horror movies.

Second, I think this movie had a lot of good scenes as far as horror movies go. I've certainly seen far worse in other horror movies. The last 30 or so minutes were filled with tons of tension, gore and kills. Sweeney's character turns into a bloodthirsty killer and the last parts of this movie are certainly the best. In particular, the final scene where she finally gives birth to the abomination and then proceeds to crush it to death was brutal and satisfying enough. But the story overall was pretty generic and straightforward and didn't really do much different than anything else I've seen in the genre. You're likely to find better stories and characters in other horror movies but it's serviceable for this movie in general.

Lastly, I have to say I quite enjoyed the score to this movie. Will Bates did a great job of mixing a classic horror synth score with the more traditional orchestral score often found in most of these religious horror movies. It was definitely one of the things that stood out for me while watching this movie.

Overall, there are far better horror movies out there, religious or otherwise, that you could spend your time and money on. I highly recommend The First Omen over this for sure. But this is an under 90 minute movie that I feel is worth a watch, even if it's only a one time viewing, and I've seen far worse horror movies than this.
