Review of Demons

Demons (1971)
10/10
Gripping, unique, artful

Shura combines evocative and occasionally visceral experimental cinematography with an enthralling story that leads one places and then lets one realize where they have been led after the fact. The marriage of these elements provide a narrative that feels totally unique and creates a feeling of involvement and investment that few films impart. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough. If you ever find yourself feeling uninspired by storytelling in film, Shura is a breath of fresh air. In addition if you're interested in Japanese film, Shura has a pacing that I would describe as more comfortable for Western viewers than some Japanese films of the period.
