Beautiful and heartbreaking
15 May 2024
Maybe it's me getting on in years, but I don't think any other show has so frequently moved me to tears. This series is full of little stories involving themes of love, loneliness, belonging and acceptance. It's a wonderfully painful reminder of how connecting with others remains a core imperative of our nature, and the lack of it alone is enough to break someone to pieces. There are few things as sad as not belonging, or not being able to be with someone you deeply love. Natsume yûjinchô exploits all that. Expands on it. Fill you to the brim with pity, loss and desire. To bittersweet endings and the cruelness of fate. But it also shows you the kindness we are all capable of. From the most powerful to the weakest and least significant of us, and through small actions something profound may occur and remain.

I don't have the words to describe these emotions, nor can I properly explain what this series illustrates. Just that it's beautifully sad while heartwarming in a quiet way, and you'll be better off for having seen it.
