It is just the picture to win new recruits to the photoplay patrons

An excellent two reel picture of a very interesting poem. Browning's scenario stands out clearly, as shown, and the story is intensely dramatic. The play has been produced several times, but has never been very popular. Perhaps it is due to Browning's peculiar style, for the picture has the elements of popularity in a marked degree. The Biograph producer has also made a scholarly production in it and deserves high commendation. Not only did the three principals act it with much intelligence and suggestiveness, but the choice of the scenes, their management, and the choice of backgrounds and settings are very satisfactory. Browning's philosophy is a little hard, puritanical, and the story is apt to leave a slightly unpleasant taste in thoughtful spectators. But the story is very famous and the situation is poignantly intense. It is the week's greatest feature picture. It should be advertised among schools and teachers and people of culture. It is just the picture to win new recruits to the photoplay patrons. It should be carefully put on and with well- chosen, appropriate music. No exhibitor should regret having put it on; it ought to be a business getter. - The Moving Picture World, February 17, 1912
