To avoid any hint of scandal after the death of her fiancé and the birth of her baby, Dorothea ( Seena Owen ) gives her child to her friend Martha ( Norma Talmadge ), who arranges to have the infant raised by her old nurse. Having been able to keep her baby a secret, Dorothea marries Deacon Hunt ( Ralph Lewis ) and Martha becomes engaged to John ( William Hinckley ). Unfortunately, the unscrupulous Sell Hawkins ( Tully Marshall ) remembers having seen Martha bring the baby to the nurse, and in-front of the church congregation accuses her of being an unwed mother. Dorothea keeps quiet, while poor Martha hoping to protect her friend, declines telling the truth about the child. Martha's guilt looks real, when suddenly the child is brought injured into the church and Dorothea's maternal instinct takes over, she rushes to the child, with her actions and expression betraying her own secret.
