If you’re not a fan of classic cinema, you may not recognize his name. However, in addition to becoming a renowned Oscar-nominated character actor with one of the industry’s most distinctive voices, Claude Rains also taught the craft to some of cinema’s most legendary actors.
Born on November 10, 1899 in London, the future actor who would become known for his elegance and quiet authority had very humble beginnings. His father was a stage actor, and the family lived in poverty, with Rains being one of only three children out of twelve to not die from poverty-related issues. He had a heavy cockney accent and a stutter, and dropped out of school after second grade to earn money for the family. Growing up around the theater, he was soon performing in plays, starting at the age of ten. In 1913, he came to America to find work in the New York theaters,...

There have been quite a few remakes of The Invisible Man over the years, but Universal's latest take on the classic movie monster looks to be the most terrifying.
The film stars Elisabeth Moss as Cecilia, a woman who finally sets in motion a successful plan to escape her abusive, wealthy scientist boyfriend Adrian (Haunting of Hill House alum Oliver Jackson-Cohen). As she struggles to get back to normal with the help of her friends, Cecilia is informed that Adrian has died by suicide and left her his fortune. Cecilia is shocked that someone as brilliant (and psychopathic) as Adrian would do something like that, and soon comes to suspect that not all is as it seems - has the scientist finally figured out a way to become invisible and faked his own death? Madness, murder, and the ultimate battle of the wills ensues.
The Invisible Man, due out Feb.

So far The Invisible Man reboot looks like it might be taking a page right out of Hollow Man but with an even more psychotic lean to it since the main characters seem a lot more tortured and not nearly as contrived. According to Michael Kennedy of ScreenRant the original actor picked for the role that Claude Rains made so famous was none other than Johnny Depp, but after the flops that were Dracula Untold and The Mummy with Tom Cruise things were looking kind of grim. In all honesty the Invisible Man is a property that’s been overlooked and

Elisabeth Moss is fighting for her life — and her sanity — in the new trailer for Universal’s unsettling sci-fi thriller “The Invisible Man.”
“The Invisible Man,” based on H.G. Wells’ novel, is a reboot of the 1933 film starring Claude Rains. The re-imagined adaptation of the Dark Universe monster centers on a rich and brilliant scientist (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) who privately carries out an abusive relationship with his wife, Cecilia Kass (Moss). She eventually escapes with the help of her friends and family, later finding out her ex committed suicide. But when he leaves her a huge portion of his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax.
“It just doesn’t make any sense,” Moss’ character says. “Adrian wouldn’t kill himself.”
Cecilia’s sanity is tested after a terrifying series of events begin to prove her suspicions.
“I’m scared,” she says later in the footage. “He was a sociopath,...

The Dark Universe may be dead in the water after the disastrous flop of The Mummy, but Universal and Blumhouse Productions have taken a different and more clever approach to their IPs by letting their various monsters star in their own features, untethered to any cinematic universe. With the vast technological advancements of the 21st century, The Invisible Man is an apropos place to start as can be seen in the first trailer for the creature feature, once again adapting H.G. Wells classic story.
Evoking works such as Gaslight and director Leigh Whannell’s previous feature Upgrade, this reinterpretation of The Invisible Man shifts the focus from the titular character to the victim of his abuse, Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss). After Cecilia’s ex-boyfriend Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) commits suicide and leaves her a fortune, she suspects there is more to his death after she finds herself seemingly haunted by an...

The first trailer for Universal and Blumhouse’s updated take on the classic monster movie character “The Invisible Man” has appeared from the shadows.
Elisabeth Moss stars in the film as a woman who leaves her violent and abusive husband, only to fear she’s haunted by his presence after he kills himself. She soon discovers however that he’s found a way to make himself invisible and will do everything he can to torture her, all while everyone around her thinks she’s gone mad.
“He was a sociopath. Completely in control of everything. He said that wherever I went, he would find me. Walk right up to me, and I wouldn’t be able to see him,” Moss says in the trailer. “Someone’s sitting in that chair.”

Just because no one else can see your ex-boyfriend doesn't mean he's not there. Especially when he abused you horribly, causing you to flee for your life, and to keep running, even after he reportedly killed himself. This is the premise of The Invisible Man as envisioned by Leigh Whannell, the Saw co-creator (with James Wan) and recent director of the very intense Upgrade. From the first trailer, it looks as though his new version of The Invisible Man will be a pulse-pounder, following the always-terrific Elisabeth Moss as she battles an evil force that no one else can see. Oliver Jackson-Cohen is the ex-boyfriend; Storm Reid and Aldis Hodge also star. Check out the trailer below. The film is set for release in theaters...

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have released the first trailer for the forthcoming “The Invisible Man” reboot, a haunting modern tale of obsession starring Elisabeth Moss as a woman being stalked by her sociopathic, abusive ex-boyfriend. The classic monster myth has been updated to exploit contemporary fears, and using the “Us” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” star as its feminist genre heroine. The newly released trailer promises plenty of jump scares, hair-raising stalker scenes, women not being believed, and finally — sweet, bloody vengeance.

Universal has been rethinking their approach to rebooting their classic monsters lately after the whole Dark Universe debacle. Behind-the-scenes troubles plagued the production of The Mummy, which underwhelmed at the box office and didn’t impress critics, either, killing off any attempt to relaunch these characters as part of a closely connected cinematic universe like the McU.
Now, the studio has changed up its game plan and will be bringing us more standalone efforts, with The Invisible Man set to be the first one out of the gate. Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade was one of the best films of last year, with a keen, kinetic style to flesh out his visceral take on body horror. Today we see the director take on an old favourite, a key horse in the Universal Horror stable – The Invisible Man.
Here’s the trailer,
Entertainment Weekly had the first look images and spoke to director Leigh Whannell about updating the monster for a new century.
The image of the Invisible Man in the floating trench coat and the floating sunglasses is one that is clearly etched into the public consciousness…I wanted to kind of get away from that and make something that was really modern, really grounded, or as grounded as you can be when you’re dealing with a film called The Invisible Man. Just something that was really tense and scary in a way The Invisible Man hasn’t been before.

Imagine what it would be like to be unseen to the rest of the world. At the very least, the younger crowd would probably be chomping at the bit to get in to see an R-rated movie without being noticed. The prospect—however—creates a much likelier chance for people to use and abuse such an ability. Kevin Bacon’s Sebastian Caine found that out the hard way in 2000’s “Hollow Man.” Ironically, the inspiration behind that movie is set to return to the big screen, as “The Invisible Man” makes his presence felt once again.

The new project, about some mysterious goings on at a secluded island, is called Wellsville.
Exploring a noted author's entire back catalogue within the frame of a single TV series worked for Hulu's Castle Rock, so maybe it'll work for new NBC series, Wellsville?
H.G. Wells' books are on the serving block for the new show, which will follow Ellie, "a young scientist lured to a secluded island under the pretense of curing her terminally sick mother. While there she discovers there is more to this island and its inhabitants than it seems" (via Deadline).
Charmed's George Northy is penning Wellsville for NBC, through Gail Berman's Fox-owned SideCar company. There are no further details on Wellsville at present, but there are a host of premium stories by the British author to choose from if Northy and co. are looking to create a series rich in sci-fi mythology.

Exclusive: NBC has put in development Wellsville, a drama inspired by the works of author H.G. Wells, from writer George Northy (Charmed), Fox Entertainment’s SideCar Content Accelerator and Universal TV.
This marks one of the first major sales to another broadcast network for the Gail Berman-run SideCar, which is fully owned by Fox Entertainment. The company, launched earlier this year, is developing and producing/co-producing scripted and unscripted shows. Its primary goal is to supply Fox but the company also does shows for other networks and has a Darren Criss musical comedy at Quibi and an animated comedy in the works at Adult Swim.
Written by Northy, Wellsville is centered on Ellie, a young scientist lured to a secluded island under the pretense of curing her terminally sick mother. While there she discovers there is more to this island and its inhabitants than it seems.

Clap for The Wolf Man, folks: no Universal monster has endured the solitary pain of a cursed table for one like Larry Talbot; Dracula has his brides, and Frankenstein’s monster has his creator in his corner. Not so Larry, and especially not in the first of his adventures, The Wolf Man (1941), George Waggner’s classic tale of a lovable guy with an extreme follicle condition.
This wasn’t Universal’s first draw in the werewolf sweepstakes, however; that honor goes to 1935’s Werewolf of London starring Henry Hull, but his muted appearance kept audiences away. But after the success of their other monster franchises, they decided to give the lycanthrope another chance. This time it stuck.
The Wolf Man was such a big success that it finally launched star Lon Chaney Jr.’s career in horror after several years of bit parts as part of his Universal contract; it also set up several sequels,...

A friendly face returned to the fold on Thursday’s Legacies, while another face was twisted into something quite unrecognizable.
Let’s start with that long-awaited return: This week’s episode pit Hope against a shunka, “a carnivorous creature that feasts only on werewolves.” Fearing that Rafael might end up at the top of its menu, Hope — along with Landon, who caught her in the act of using a locator spell to track down the wayward wolf — ventured into the woods to slay the beast and save the day.

Universal's monsters are rising from the dead thanks to upcoming films such as The Invisible Man (out Feb. 28, 2020) and Paul Feig's recently announced Dark Army. But the classic creatures will also be haunting the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County this Halloween.
The Natural History of Horror exhibit, which opened Thursday and runs through April 2020, features props and rare stills from movies such as Dracula and Frankenstein, and looks at the real-life science and events that inspired monster movies of the 1920s-50s (such as the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb leading to The Mummy).

Once Universal’s terrible Mummy reboot with Tom Cruise in the lead came out, folks wished they’d have just gone ahead and made another one with Brendan Fraser – the actor himself included. From 1999 to 2008, Fraser starred in three horror/adventure movies which earned a grand total of $1.41 billion. You might think that Universal were fools for stopping at three, then, but it’s interesting to note that they very nearly made a fourth entry in the series.
In a piece on the future of the Universal Monsters franchise, The Hollywood Reporter recalls that a fourth film was proposed following the release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Unfortunately, however, the studio ultimately elected to move forward with building a cinematic universe instead in an attempt to rival Marvel and DC. And as we all know, that didn’t work out as planned.

As part of their Fox acquisition deal, The Walt Disney Company controls screen rights to the 1989 comic book series, "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman", previously adapted as a feature film (2003) and now developing as a live-action TV series:
Fox had given a pilot commitment to the TV adaptation, based on the graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and illustrator Kevin O'Neill.
According to Moore, the concept behind the series was initially a 'Justice League of Victorian England':
"...in the aftermath of the events of the novel 'Dracula', a now disgraced and divorced 'Mina Harker' is recruited by 'Campion Bond' on behalf of 'British Intelligence' ...
"...and asked to assemble a league of other extraordinary individuals to protect the interests of the British Empire.

Last October, Blumhouse rebooted the Halloween franchise – well, kind of, booting everything but John Carpenter’s original – and ended up making the most successful film following Michael Myers’ seasonal serial killings to date. Naturally, fans have been waiting for official confirmation that a sequel will be happening ever since. Things had gone a little bit quiet on that front lately, but Jason Blum has just confirmed he’s working on making it a reality.
With Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man reboot landing a release date in March 2020, one fan questioned the producer on Twitter about when Halloween 2 – or, technically, Halloween 12 – will be getting an announcement of some kind. The horror studio’s founder replied with a brief but encouraging: “Working on it.”
Of course, Blum has never been shy about talking about his own personal wish to continue the eternal battle between Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode and her masked tormentor,...

Things are moving along with the production of the upcoming Universal and Blumhouse film, The Invisible Man. We learned last month that Elisabeth Moss was cast in the film, and now we know Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time) will also play a role.
Leigh Whannell has signed on to direct the film based on the original monster movie from 1933, as well as the novel by H.G. Wells.
We now have a release date for the upcoming film of March 13, 2020. This puts the film up against Godzilla Vs. Kong, but that should make the box office pretty fun! It will be a great double feature at the drive-in or in the theater.
