The United States had been at war a little over a year when the 15th Academy Awards were presented on March 4, 1943. It was the last year that the awards were celebrated at a lavish banquet; they would be moved to a theater setting in the ensuing years. The impact of World War II can be seen in the films honored, as well as the ceremony itself.
Popular musical star Jeannette MacDonald sang the National Anthem, and newly enlisted military privates Tyrone Power and Alan Ladd unfurled a flag that listed over 25,000 film industry members who had joined the armed forces. Bob Hope hosted the event, which saw one big winner, numerous patriotic choices and the first win for one of the industry’s biggest record-makers. Let’s flashback 80 years to the Oscars ceremony of 1943.

Vincent van Gogh’s painting Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear sold for $71.5 million at a November 1998 Christie’s auction. The artist created it after dropping a package off at a brothel for a woman named Rachel, telling her to “guard this object with your life.” That was in December 1888. Van Gogh was an unknown artist at the time. Adrien Brody plays a similar art curator to those at Christie’s in Wes Anderson’s anthology film, The French Dispatch. The first vignette in the three-story film exhibits how commerce in the art world is a cut-throat business, especially when it’s personal.
The French Dispatch is Anderson’s homage to The New Yorker during the magazine’s heyday under founder/editor Harold Ross, fictionalized in the film as Arthur Howitzer, Jr., portrayed eccentrically by Bill Murray. With writers like James Thurber, A.J. Liebling, James Baldwin, and Rosamond Bernier, it was idiosyncratic and utterly original.

Ak vs Ak (Vikramaditya Motwane)
Over the 21st century, Bollywood cinema has entered into a completely different era of filmmaking and storytelling than was being made in the decades prior. Actors and directors who started their careers in the ‘80s and ‘90s have experienced such a drastic shift from their beginnings to what they are doing now that their older works seem almost archaic and unrecognizable. This has led, expectedly, to many of Bollywood’s artists making self-reflexive work that also reflects on the industry in general––Fan, Sanju, The Dirty Picture, Luck By Chance, and Shamitabh are just a few examples. Vikramaditya Motwane’s Ak vs Ak is...

They’re the scenes that get us talking. They’re the moving moments in which a film comes into focus not only for the audience, but also for the actors. While they may not necessarily be the clips chosen by the Academy to showcase their nominees, these sequences hold something special within.
This year’s moments that made an impact on the performers involve a famous performer in the spotlight, a mother making an emphatic plea for her son’s innocence, three women debating their careers after horrific events and an ordinary woman challenged to do the extraordinary. All three of these films in awards contention this season seek to restore luster to the legacy of history makers who have either been revered, such as Harriet Tubman, or reviled, including Richard Jewell and Megyn Kelly.

On Judy, costume designer Jany Temime sought to capture a duality that existed within Judy Garland—the strength and raw talent of an iconic American performer, as well as the weakness that manifested toward the end of her career.
“It’s not a nice, little Hollywood anecdote about Judy Garland. It’s the reason she became what she was in 1969,” Temime reflects. “How you can destroy a soul, just for the sake of making a star of it.”
Directed by Rupert Goold, the drama picks up with Garland (Renée Zellweger) in the winter of 1968, as she prepares for a series of concerts at London nightclub The Talk of The Town. Plagued by substance abuse issues and financial troubles in the final year of her life, Garland nonetheless sells out each show, going out not with a whimper, but a bang.

“I knew she had the chops – she could do drama, had won an Oscar for drama, can do comedy, and had an Oscar nomination for ‘Chicago,’” says David Livingstone of Renee Zellweger’s turn in “Judy,” which he produced under his Calamity Films banner.

Renée Zellweger will take us all over the rainbow later this year in Judy, a drama set 30 years after The Wizard of Oz, following Hollywood legend Judy Garland's sold-out run at a venue called The Talk of the Town in London. The film will see Judy battling her management, performing some of her most iconic songs, and eventually falling in love with her soon-to-be fifth husband, Mickey Deans.
While we've previously glimpsed the trailer and a few gorgeous photos from the film, the studio has now shared a track featuring Zellweger belting out Garland's most iconic song, "Over the Rainbow."
So, not only does Zellweger physically transform into the Hollywood legend for the drama, but she'll also be singing many of Garland's greatest songs on the soundtrack. While the film isn't slated to premiere until Sept. 27, Judy will screen at both the Toronto and Telluride film festivals, surely kicking...

There aren’t a lot of things Hollywood loves more in a film than the retelling of true-to-life events or the on-screen portrayal of the real life of a complicated or inspiring person. For proof, look no further than what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards each year: In the last 10 years of the Academy Awards, seven times the coveted award for best actor has gone to someone portraying a real person, including last year when Rami Malek won for “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Renée Zellweger has been out of the spotlight for a long time. We haven’t really seen her in many movies in recent years, but it looks like she could be making a major comeback with this Judy Garland biopic, Judy.
She takes on the role of Garland in the movie, and as you’ll see in this new trailer for the film, it looks like she gives an incredible performance. I’ve been impressed by what what I’ve seen of her in this movie so far. This seems like a perfect role for the actress to take on.
As many of you already know, Judy Garland led a hell of a hard life filled with a ridiculous amount of abuse from people throughout her life, and it all started when she was a kid. It was incredibly tragic and sad and this film will shed some light on...

Beloved Hollywood icon Judy Garland has gotten the biopic treatment many times before, from “Rainbow: The Stormy Life of Judy Garland,” an early made-for-tv movie that followed her initial forays into the industry, to the not entirely flattering miniseries “Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows,” but Rupert Goold’s upcoming “Judy” promises to explore a different part of her storied life. Starring Renee Zellweger as the “Wizard of Oz” star, the awards season biopic will likely offer a sober, emotional look at a strange time in Garland’s life.
Per the film’s official synopsis, the film will pick up in “Winter 1968 [when] showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown.

Playing a movie legend like Judy Garland on the big screen is a pretty colossal task, and that pressure falls on none other than Renée Zellweger in the upcoming drama “Judy.” The film, directed by “Richard III” Tony nominee and Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold, is a biopic of sorts of that focuses on Garland during her final concert performances in London.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform in a sell-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians, and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through.”
“Judy” is easily Zellweger’s highest profile role in years.

It certainly seems to be the year of the woman at the Academy Awards. Greta Gerwig became just the fifth woman to receive a Best Director Oscar nomination for “Lady Bird.” For the first time in the academy’s 90-year history, a woman, AFI Conservancy alum Rachel Morrison, has been nominated for Best Cinematography for “Mudbound.” And the drama’s director Dee Rees made history as the first black woman to receive a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The film’s star Mary J. Blige not only received a supporting actress nomination, but she is also nominated for Best Original Song for “Mighty River” from the film, alongside co-writers Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson.
But it’s been baby steps for women behind the camera in terms of Oscar nominations, let alone wins.
Here is a look at some of the trailblazers:

Updated: Following a couple of Julie London Westerns*, Turner Classic Movies will return to its July 2017 Star of the Month presentations. On July 27, Ronald Colman can be seen in five films from his later years: A Double Life, Random Harvest (1942), The Talk of the Town (1942), The Late George Apley (1947), and The Story of Mankind (1957). The first three titles are among the most important in Colman's long film career. George Cukor's A Double Life earned him his one and only Best Actor Oscar; Mervyn LeRoy's Random Harvest earned him his second Best Actor Oscar nomination; George Stevens' The Talk of the Town was shortlisted for seven Oscars, including Best Picture. All three feature Ronald Colman at his very best. The early 21st century motto of international trendsetters, from Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro and Turkey's Recep Erdogan to Russia's Vladimir Putin and the United States' Donald Trump, seems to be, The world is reality TV and reality TV...

Jean Arthur films on TCM include three Frank Capra classics Five Jean Arthur films will be shown this evening, Monday, January 5, 2015, on Turner Classic Movies, including three directed by Frank Capra, the man who helped to turn Arthur into a major Hollywood star. They are the following: Capra's Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, You Can't Take It with You, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington; George Stevens' The More the Merrier; and Frank Borzage's History Is Made at Night. One the most effective performers of the studio era, Jean Arthur -- whose film career began inauspiciously in 1923 -- was Columbia Pictures' biggest female star from the mid-'30s to the mid-'40s, when Rita Hayworth came to prominence and, coincidentally, Arthur's Columbia contract expired. Today, she's best known for her trio of films directed by Frank Capra, Columbia's top director of the 1930s. Jean Arthur-Frank Capra...

Cary Grant movies: 'An Affair to Remember' does justice to its title (photo: Cary Grant ca. late 1940s) Cary Grant excelled at playing Cary Grant. This evening, fans of the charming, sophisticated, debonair actor -- not to be confused with the Bristol-born Archibald Leach -- can rejoice, as no less than eight Cary Grant movies are being shown on Turner Classic Movies, including a handful of his most successful and best-remembered star vehicles from the late '30s to the late '50s. (See also: "Cary Grant Classic Movies" and "Cary Grant and Randolph Scott: Gay Lovers?") The evening begins with what may well be Cary Grant's best-known film, An Affair to Remember. This 1957 romantic comedy-melodrama is unusual in that it's an even more successful remake of a previous critical and box-office hit -- the Academy Award-nominated 1939 release Love Affair -- and that it was directed...

Joel McCrea, Jean Arthur, The More the Merrier The delightful actress Jean Arthur is Turner Classic Movies' star of the evening tonight. Directed by George Stevens, The Talk of the Town received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and two for its story and screenplay. (Back in those days there were three Best Writing categories.) Arthur is outstanding as a schoolteacher — this is perhaps my favorite among her performances — torn between a law professor (an equally outstanding Ronald Colman) and an escaped convict (Cary Grant).
