Welcome back, readers, for another installment of Daily Dead’s 2017 Holiday Gift Guide! For day eight, we are going all in on enamel pins, simply because there are so many amazing designs out there and it was hard to narrow down the list. That being said, here’s a list of over 100 horror and sci-fi themed enamel pins that we discovered online, and we guarantee there’s absolutely something for every genre fan out there, so if you need some stocking stuffer or holiday gift ideas, look no further!
Do keep in mind that in most cases, what you see below is only a partial listing of each site’s inventory, so I recommend digging around each online store for all kinds of goodies, because there are some truly amazing enamel pin designs out there (I could have easily done a list of 200, but my sanity won out).

Composer Kevin Blumenfeld has enhanced scares through his music on The Walking Dead webisodes, and now he's bringing horror to the halls of higher education with his electronic score for go90's new murder mystery series, In the Vault. For our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Blumenfeld to discuss his new project, working within the world of The Walking Dead, and the horror films that have inspired and influenced him over the years.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Kevin. When did you initially become interested in music and what did you listen to in your formative years?
Kevin Blumenfeld: I’d say I became interested in music when I was about four or five years old. My father started taking piano lessons. Which, in retrospect, is very hard to imagine. I’d sit at the bottom of the stairs and would just listen.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott talks about running an independent film company in the UK, finding the right project and a post-Brexit industry.
Jonathan Sothcott has had a hand in producing a whole lot of independent films here in the UK over the last decade. You may have even seen a fair few of them yourself, especially if you’re a Danny Dyer completest.

If that name rings a bell, it might well be because Morley owns a modelling agency that takes care of most of the Page 3 girls, and the entrepreneur has even recently launched a bid to buy the Page 3 brand off The Sun himself.

Using vampirism for allegorical purposes, Michael O’Shea’s The Transfiguration is a truly stunning and heartbreaking effort from a first-time director who demonstrates an appreciation for horror, showing how the genre can be a vessel for exploring stories with deeper meanings without getting too preachy or heavy-handed. Anchored by incredible performances from Eric Ruffin and Chloe Levine, The Transfiguration defies yet embraces its conventions, all while playing like a love letter to the vampire sub-genre. This riveting progressive horror story sunk its teeth deep into my soul.
The Transfiguration follows Milo (Ruffin), a troubled teen living in New York City with his older brother, Lewis (Aaron Clifton Moten), after losing both of his parents. Milo has a fascination (“obsession” might be a more accurate term) with vampires, and it’s starting to spill over into his everyday life. Consumed with thoughts of blood and killing, Milo even studies online...

Stephen King adaptations are very hard to pull off successfully. For every Misery, there’s a Graveyard Shift; Carrie soars while Cujo stalls. The small screen has had it just as bad—the elephantine The Stand benefits from its four-night rollout, while no amount of time could save The Tommyknockers. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg—at last count, there were 91 King adaptations (I’ll need to double-check those figures) across all media. For this blurry-eyed cathode ray kid, however, nothing has yet to match the two-part graveyard dance known as Salem’s Lot (1979).
Originally airing on CBS on Saturday November 17th and 24th, Salem’s Lot was a huge success for the network; there was even talk of turning it into a weekly series. Alas, that never came to be. 1985. Horror was going through a sea change on the film front, as slashers were shown the door and creature features became the cool kids on campus again. People lined up to see vampires (Fright Night) and werewolves (Silver Bullet) and zombies (Day of the Dead), oh my—but my favorite subgenre, the Mad Scientist, came roaring back to life with director Stuart Gordon’s (From Beyond, Dagon) manic masterpiece debut, Re-Animator.
Released in October, Re-Animator proved once again that when properly executed, horror and humor are delightful bedfellows, co-conspirators with the noblest of intentions: to entertain. Horror, while certainly not easy to do well (scroll through Netflix on any given day), has it made in the shade compared to comedy. Humor is more subjective, and what rubs me as funny may chafe you as stupid or insipid. Most people will agree that The Exorcist is terrifying, but not everyone likes...

From anime to pitch-black thrillers, here's our pick of the underappreciated movies of 1987...
Sometimes, the challenge with these lists isn't just what to put in, but what to leave out. We loved Princess Bride, but with a decent showing at the box office and a huge cult following, isn't it a bit too popular to be described as underappreciated? Likewise Joe Dante's Innerspace, a fabulously geeky, comic reworking of the 60s sci-fi flick, Fantastic Voyage.
What we've gone for instead is a mix of genre fare, dramas and animated films that may have garnered a cult following since, but didn't do well either critically or financially at the time of release. Some of the movies on our list just about made their money back, but none made anything close to the sort of returns enjoyed by the likes of 1987's biggest films - Three Men And A Baby, Fatal Attraction...

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

Exclusive Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut Interview - The Scream Factory Comic-Con panel dropped huge news for Clive Barker fans last week when it was announced that they’d be releasing Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut on Blu-ray. In an exclusive interview with Daily Dead, Russell Cherrington, Mark Miller, and Michael Plumides discuss their work on The Cabal Cut, teaming up with Scream Factory, bonus features, and where you can catch a screening of the movie later this week:
Congratulations on getting The Cabal Cut on Blu-ray.
Mark Miller: First let me say, this is an incredible time for Seraphim Films. We have worked closely with Morgan Creek on bringing the Cabal Cut to the world, and upon hearing the news that a deal had been struck with Shout Factory, we were overjoyed. The fruits of our labors have finally paid off. We eagerly await the next chapter in this saga.

One of the real exciting announcements to come out of this year's San Diego Comic-Con is the fact that Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut (review) is finally making its way to video. Michael Plumides is a filmmaker who was instrumental in making this happen.
Plumides recently sat down with Dread Central and talked about his experiences helping Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut finally see the light of day.
Dread Central: What was your role in this venture?
Michael Plumides: Well, I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although I've lived in Georgia and South Carolina I was born and raised here. And though my 4808 Club was shut down by the city after the infamous Gwar show of 1990, I still consider this my home - even if they tried to run me out on a rail. I wrote a book about it entitled, Kill the Music that someday I hoped to turn into a film.

In a quiet week Total Recall and The Watch posted respectable figures, but Berberian Sound Studio lost out to The Imposter

The last weekend of the school summer holiday has never exactly been a premium release date in the UK: over the past couple of years we've seen such venerated classics as Fright Night, Apollo 18 and Dinner for Schmucks dumped on to the market. So this year's batch of end-of-summer releases, while hardly eliciting critical hosannas or audience stampedes, is certainly no worse than usual. Between them, new releases Total Recall and The Watch kicked in £4.7m in box-office, pushing aside Brave to grab the top two spots in the weekend chart.
It's worth noting, however, that both saw their figures inflated by significant previews: two days' worth in the case of Total Recall (£959,000 of the £2.49m total) and four days for The Watch (£1.43m of the...

Remember 1984’s “GhostSmashers” aka “GhostStoppers”? Of course you do. With a star-studded cast featuring John Belushi (Peter Venkman), Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Jeff Goldblum (Egon Spengler), Eddie Murphy (Winston Zeddemore), John Candy (Louis), Sandra Bernhard (Janine) and Paul Reubens (Ivo Shandar/Gozer), the future-set supernatural comedy in which roving teams of ghost catchers protect humanity from the supernatural, directed by Ivan Reitman, cost a whopping $300 million to make, featured hundreds of monsters, including a giant marshmallow man, and spawned not one but two sequels; the second of which got smoothly underway recently with the full, gracious participation of all of the original cast.
Ok, all of that happened in a parallel universe, where casting decisions went the other way, Dan Aykroyd’s original script got the green light, where perhaps dogs and cats live together in mass hysteria...but we got “Ghostbusters” instead. We wouldn't trade.

Looking back on 2011, we should have seen it coming. The growing re-obsession with ’80s brands in entertainment. Facebook reconnecting old friends and classmates. YouTube rising to prominence and providing the means to relive memorable moments. Digital music making it virtually effortless to rediscover classic tunes. Nostalgia just became a major part of our lives, at a time when perhaps the present wasn’t the easiest. Naturally, pop culture has corrected itself to capitalize, which is maybe why most movies this year felt so recycled.
The summer season looked like someone had a yard sale for comic books and the best ones were kept tucked away. Thor. Captain America. Green Lantern. Wait, X-Men! Only it’s a new, “first” class set in the ’60s, sans favorites like Wolverine. Earlier, The Green Hornet?
Meanwhile, Real Steel made things used and rusted feel… used and shiny. We all learned a valuable lesson from The Help’s age-old wisdom,...

Where would some of our favorite horror sequences be without their musical accompaniment? It goes without saying that the right music not only sets the tone of the film, but it can be just as important as the cinematography, actors, locations, and so on. One of my favorite composers currently working in the horror genre is Jeff Grace. As if assisting Howard Shore on The Lord of the Rings films wasn’t enough, the man has won numerous awards and accolades for his musical compositions. His most recent work can be found in the pitch-perfect Ti West film The Innkeepers.

If, over the last 10 months, you’ve sometimes felt that sitting through 2011’s movies has been somewhat akin to sitting through TV’s summer reruns, that’s because you have been sitting through reruns. Well, reruns Hollywood style.
According to a Box Office Mojo story earlier this year, 2011 will end as a record year for sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. I don’t know if Mojo included remakes in that calculation, but whether they did or didn’t, remakes have certainly added to that oppressive déjà vu feeling which seems to roll into the multiplex every couple of weeks.
And we’re not even considering the familiar-feeling clones and knock-offs. “Oh, yippee, another superhero flick! Another The Hangover wannabe!” It’s like that Twilight Zone where Dennis Weaver is damned to relive the same bad dream over and over; the people take different parts in each cycle, but it’s still the same nightmare.

As our last thrilling episode ended in June, we had left poor, helpless, hapless Hollywood tied to railroad tracks with the July/August Express out of Union Station barreling down, dastardly Audience Disinterest at the throttle, henchman Audience Apathy throwing on more coal.
But wait! Are those cavalry bugles heard from just over the hill?
Yes! Coming to the rescue, led by our hero Captain Overseas Markets and his sidekick Ancillary Sales!
And just in the nick of time, too!
Seriously. Because I doubt there’s been a Monday’s reading of weekend box office tallies by studio execs this year which hasn’t been accompanied by a silent prayer of thanks for overseas receipts.
Over the last 20-30 years or so, it hasn’t been unusual for top-earning releases – particularly action-driven fare – to pull in more revenue overseas than at home, but recent years have seen the dynamic ratchet up to a dizzying level.

Much like Quentin Tarantino, the legendary John Carpenter has long been influenced by Westerns and just like Kill Bill is a sprawling Leone homage but set mostly in a different culture, Carpenter himself used Howard Hawks’ classic Western Rio Bravo as the basis for his urban gangs vs. cops breakthrough Assault on Precinct 13 and clearly Snake Plissken from Escape from New York is his version of the Man With No Name. On the recent Once Upon A Time In The West Blu-ray, Carpenter can be heard on the audio commentary pouring his heart out about his love for the film, this is a genre he has long admired and probably one he has wanted to put his indelible mark on for decades.
Surprisingly Carpenter himself has never made a full out Western, perhaps making what Tarantino calls many of his own films “half-assed Westerns” such as 1998′s Vampires of...

Looking back, I've realized how good a summer it has been at the theaters. The other day, the entire Tmp staff recounted our personal favorite films to come out in Summer 2011, and reading all the staff picks beforehand, it dawned on me: this has been an amazing summer for me, for Tmp, and for film fans all over. Before I could fully move on to the Fall movie season, I knew I had to make my peace and deliver a final goodbye to the Summer that was 2011 at the movies.
We here at Tmp have invested a lot of time into Summer 2011. We tackled a huge guide compiling every single notable release of the Summer into four convenient, easy to read articles. We predicted what would be the highest grossing films of the season, and did a pretty damn good job at it (if I do say so my self...

This summer has been a strange one for Hollywood. On one hand, it was the first summer every to deliver not one, not two but three, billion dollar movies with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon all having crossed that threshold in worldwide receipts. A couple of other films fared quite well, making over $200 million at the box-office, such as Fast Five and The Hangover Part II. Then you have hits such as Thor, Bridesmaids and, more recently, Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
So why does it seem so many film fans are bummed about this summer's movies? More importantly, why is Hollywood suddenly canceling many high profile film projects at the last minute because they fear they will lose all kinds of money? Projects featuring high profile players like Johnny Depp, Gore Verbinski...

Sleeper summer film hit The Help has topped the U.S. box office in its second week on release.
The movie, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Viola Davis and Emma Stone, has made an impressive $20.5 million (£12.8 million) over the weekend (19-21Aug11) to take over the top spot from Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
The Help has now made over $70 million (£43.8 million) since its release earlier this month.
The Planet of the Apes prequel comes in second place with a third-weekend take of $16.3 million (£10.2 million) and the rest of the top five features new movies, which garnered disappointing ticket sales.
Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D came in third with a lacklustre $12 million (£7.5 million), while remakes of Conan The Barbarian and Fright Night round out the top five.

This is the kind of movie critics ravage. Like the armies of Khalar Zym marching over the horizon, you can just see them coming in hoards to rape and pillage this movie until there's nothing left on its bones. I don't know why pulpy, loud, sexy, violent, balls-to-the-wall earnest action movies gets their goats but they just do. They are like the weak monks at the Temple, whereas I'm more like Conan: ripped and coming to slice them up with my own monosyllabic opinions.
Here's the deal: No matter where you stand on the new Conan the Barbarian movie, chances are it will generate the same feeling in you. That of being slapped in the face for two straight hours. Because, if you can...

The good news? It's going to be very close throughout the top ten. The bad news? It doesn't look likely that a film will even crack $20m this weekend. We're essentially predicting the leftovers vs. the holdovers. Still, let's break it down! Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 3 Weeks In A Row The Help Trivia: When's the last time a film won a weekend after not finishing first on its opening wide weekend? The Blind Side comes to mind, it won its third weekend in 2009 after finishing second twice. I can't recall an earlier example, but I await your corrections.
As for The Help, it has everything going for it. A weak batch of new releases, a sturdy "back to school"-proof demo, and fawning reviews. Should I even mention that the production budget was $25 million? Consider it mentioned.
After this weekend it will be near that coveted 3x multiplier, and...

Supposedly, according to the Herald Sun, Tom Hanks was approached by a couple of fans at a gas station. The pair had a bone to pick, though. They didn't much care for "Larry Crowne," which the Oscar winner wrote, starred in and directed. Rumor has it he reached into his pocked and reimbursed them for the cost of their tickets.
In "Superman: Man of Steel," Amy Adams' Lois Lane will be looking like... Amy Adams! Based on some images obtained by Superhero Hype, she'll be sticking to her typically gorgeous strawberry blonde hair for the flick.
What could be more romantic than a "Twilight" wedding? Brides-to-be will be able to get a replica of Bella's Carolina Herrera wedding dress, courtesy of Alfred Angelo, Women's Wear Daily reports.

Movie goers are still going ape for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” managed to fend off several films opening this weekend, including “The Help,” “Final Destination 5,” “30 Minutes or Less,” and “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” Twentieth Century Fox’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” earned another $27.5 million this weekend, a decrease of 49.8 percent from the previous weekend. The film’s total gross surpassed the $100 million mark to $104.87 million for its ten-day release. In second place, Buena Vista’s “The Help” grossed $25.5 million over the weekend and $35.4 million since Wednesday. The film is based on a Kathryn Stockett novel of the same title. The Tate Taylor-directed film starred Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Bryce Dallas Howard. The film is about three women in 1960s Mississippi who formed a friendship bond and courage to reveal the town...

In a crowded field that featured four new movies, last week’s winner, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, managed to keep its top spot on the box-office chain by recruiting $27.5 million. Fox’s sci-fi action film dropped 50 percent in its second weekend. That’s a decent hold, as most summer action flicks decline 55 to 60 percent. Apes will cross the $100 million mark today and has already surpassed its relatively modest $90 million production budget. As a result, it’s looking likely that we’ll be seeing more of Caesar the chimpanzee (and less of the human race) in the future.

Hollywood needs a hit
Actually, Hollywood needs a bunch of hits.
Actually, Hollywood needs a bunch of big, fat, through-the-roof hits.
And with the summer – and the year – half over, the time to come up with them is running out.
The movie business finished 2010 with the second highest domestic box office on record: $10.2 billion. But this was a misleading, oh, let’s call it a “symptom.” That ten billion and change was like the midpoint in every episode of House where the brilliant diagnostician thinks he’s figured out what’s ailing this week’s guest star, his team begins treatment, and, just as the patient seems to be getting better and the regulars are congratulating each other on the save…the patient throws a conniption fit, thrashing around on the bed and spitting up blood.
Part of that ten billion-plus came from a nearly 20% hike in average tickets prices...

From Thursday 25 August to Monday 29 August, the UK’s premiere event for horror fans will be at the Empire Cinema in London’s Leicester Square to present 37 films on two screens. Empire 1 will house the main event while the Discovery strand will play in Empire 4. Do you remember when vampire movies used to be, dare I say it, cool? Those long ago days when that bloody thirsty sub-genre of horror felt like it was exclusively for you and your geeky friends at school to watch and debate over? When VHS copies of The Lost Boys, Near Dark, Fright Night or if you were real lucky, recorded off the telly copies of Hammer Horror or the Universal Horror creepers would regularly play late at night as you wanted a fright or two before you went to sleep?
In a post-Twilight/True Blood age it may be hard to remember there was a time when vampire movies cared less about romance and more about horror but we’ll give each announcement of a new vampirific film it’s due and secretly but perhaps stupidly hope we may yet get another Let the Right One In classic before this overlong fad flat-lines.

West Hollywood, California — Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard spoke to a packed room at the Pacific Design Center on Thursday night (June 2) for the latest installment in MTV's Sneak Peek Week, opening up about retro tearjerker "The Help," which screened to an excited crowd shortly before the chat.
Since the book-turned-film is certainly emotional, we asked its leading ladies if they ever reach for the tissues in the movie theater.
"Oh, I cry!" Emma Stone admitted. "It's shocking I'm not crying right now. I cried at 'Air Bud.' I cried at 'Spice World.' " But what about when she watches her own movies? "That's crying out of terror and self-loathing," she joked.
All joking aside, Stone is really proud of "The Help...
