It was a good day for Leah Remini. The King of Queens vet was greeted on Thursday with news that her groundbreaking and controversial A&E docuseries Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath had received a 2017 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Informational Series or Special, putting it against the likes of Inside the Actor's Studio and Vice. The nomination is culmination of a successful year that saw Remini's deeply personal and harrowing exploration into the accounts of former members of the Church of Scientology launch as cable's No. 1 new unscripted series for 2016, eventually earning a second installment, set to air later this year. The Church of Scientology has spoken out against the series,...

You have to be a hardy soul to film a show like The Walking Dead, full of constant death and destruction. Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie with steadiness and warmth, almost reached her breaking point during the third season, when her character had to perform an emergency C-section. When she read the script, she sought her onscreen husband, Steven Yeun (Glenn!), to talk it over. "I knock on Steven’s door, and I said, 'I have to leave the show. I don’t think I can do it,'" Cohan said on Inside the Actor's Studio. "It affects you so deeply to the core to dive into so much of this material." The most important part of this anecdote, though, is that the actors all live next to each other in an "incestuous" situation. Please, go on.

Read this story at your own risk; it's best to have already seen "The Hateful Eight." Chapter One: The Play's the Thing. Much like his revered fellow dialogue maestro Aaron Sorkin, Quentin Tarantino the scribe starts with characters and lets them talk. He writes in longhand with black or red Bic or Flair pens in a white-paged notebook. He may have known ahead of time that David Carradine's character in "Kill Bill" was going to meet his demise, but otherwise he lets his characters lead him to their various denouements. With the sprawling scripts for "Django Unchained" and "Inglourious Basterds," "I'd get to the third act," he told me over tea at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. "That, I try never to maneuver. By the time it gets to the end, I was open to the characters to drive it. What the characters dictated, that’s what happened.

Don't ever ask what James Lipton has done for you lately. The Inside the Actor's Studio host grilled actor Bryan Cranston on the tough questions, including the pressing question of where exactly in Europe he first had sexual intercourse. "You've said, 'I lost my virginity on that trip in Austria," Lipton noted. "And then you say, 'I lost it in Switzerland, I lost it in Luxembourg, I lost it in France' ... Please, would you explain how in the hell that's possible?" Cranston accepted the challenge, revealing that he wasn't always the older dad bae he is now. In fact, he was a terribly insecure secret virgin! So he went to a brothel with his bro friends, and, well, that's the story of how he became a real boy.

Patrick Wilson has starred in such big-budget Hollywood movies as "The Alamo," "The Phantom of the Opera" and Zack Snyder's "Watchmen," but his latest film -- writer/director S. Craig Zahler's bleak horror-Western "Bone Tomahawk" -- wasn't exactly flush with money. Which, as far as Wilson is concerned, actually helped his performance as Arthur O'Dwyer, a young, crutches-saddled frontier man who goes on a mission to save his wife from a tribe of cannibalistic Native Americans: "I think this might have been a different movie...I felt this way actually about 'Hard Candy,' too, years ago -- you probably would have had a different performance, certainly in some takes, if the movie had been shot over three or four months," Wilson told me while promoting the film, which also stars Kurt Russell, Matthew Fox and Richard Jenkins. Harrison Ford explains Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and everyone's like, Whuh ... ? 7. And then he takes them to some art museum. 8. Everyone watches Luke die offscreen because that's the only reason he isn't in this trailer, I'm assuming. 9. Before Kristen Bell returns to the big screen for the "Veronica Mars" movie, she's joining a very exclusive club. With her next film, the animated "Frozen," she will join the ranks of Disney princesses. Bell's Anna is perhaps the quirkiest and most awkward of all of Disney's princesses, something partly inspired by Kristen herself.
The journey from real life to animated character is no easy feat, though. The animators go through several stages, which takes years, just to make sure they are creating the best possible product. Zap2it was invited to Disney Animation Studios to learn about the process of creating the characters in the movie, from conception through the finished product.

When I really began digging into classic cinema, one of the films I started with was Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, and it wasn't that long ago. According to Netflix, I returned the disc on January 8, 2008 after returning Bergman's Wild Strawberries about a month earlier (I wrote about them both briefly right here). I'd actually received both discs at the same time, but kept Seventh Seal a little longer because it had so truly captured my imagination. I've written about it a few times since, including a review of the Criterion Blu-ray a little over four years ago. I've found Bergman's work captivating ever since, several as a result of the Criterion Collection including reviewing Smiles of a Summer Night, Summer Interlude and Summer with Monica, Fanny and Alexander and The Magician along with my discovery of Persona two years ago, whose two-shot imagery is repeated in a highly...

From seeing giant rabbits to secret cowboy love affairs, Jake Gyllenhaal has dabbled in a little bit of everything, and now he's out to solve a kidnapping case.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger had a history long before they starred together in "Brokeback Mountain." Gyllenhaal revealed that bit of trivia and more in an appearance on "Inside the Actor's Studio," set to debut later this week.
Host James Lipton asked Gyllenhaal about how he and Ledger prepared for their Oscar-nominated roles in Ang Lee's story of two men who fall in love in the Wyoming mountains, and whether the two worked on establishing a relationship before cameras rolled.
"Heath and I knew each other for years before ['Brokeback'] because we had both auditioned for 'Moulin Rouge' together," Gyllenhaal said.
Gyllenhaal then launched into a profanity-riddled impression of the late actor, complete with Aussie accent.
"I remember thinking, 'I like this guy,'" Gyllenhaal recalled with a laugh, adding that Ledger was "super lovable."
Despite that lovability, Gyllenhaal admits that he was surprised when Lee chose Ledger for the film.

After struggling as a stand-up — maybe the only stage medium where the audience is free to yell terrible things at you if you're no good, they're inebriated or if they just feel like it — the world of trailers and catered meals that is film acting must seem like a cakewalk in comparison. So it's no surprise that some great stand-ups, including Robin Williams, Lily Tomlin and Jamie Foxx, have gone on to become great actors as well.
But sometimes, the guys and gals who started in stand-up end up better suited for other careers in the moviemaking business, catch their big break elsewhere and leave the damp basement stank of comedy clubs behind permanently. Here are seven actors you might not know made their hay — or at least tried to — by telling jokes before they hit the big screen.

The loss of James Gandolfini has been felt hardest by fans of The Sopranos, the HBO series that transformed our perception of how good a TV show could be, and which made a star out of veteran character actor Gandolfini at the unlikely age of 38. But a talent as large as Gandolfini's was never going to be limited to a single role or medium, and though he never played another character as long as he played Tony Soprano, he made a huge impact on film as well, playing all manner of gruff, tough men whose souls couldn't help but peek through. It feels crazy to write about Gandolfini's acting, though, when you can watch the man talk about it himself, in this full episode of Inside the Actor's Studio (hat tip Moises Chiullan). Here's an observation about Tina Fey: She is the alpha and omega. She is the funniest person alive, and I'm glad that even unfunny people realize that now. She is, as Sir Mix-a-Lot once said about Madonna, "the she-pimp of all time."
And now, Tina Fey substantiates her legend again by reviving her Emmy-winning Sarah Palin impression from Saturday Night Live on Bravo's Inside the Actor's Studio and bringing the house down.
Watch as Tina Fey uses that folksy accent to discuss gay marriage, gun control, and her mavericky ways. I was screaming.
Thank you, Tina Fey. For everything forever, and for this. We are but cowering wolves under your Ak-47 of greatness.

Tina Fey's fame earned her an interview with the great James Lipton on "Inside The Actor's Studio," but their conversation wasn't completely about her stellar career.
Sarah Palin got a few words in, too.
During the interview, Fey obliged Lipton and delighted everyone in attendance by reprising her famous impression of the former Vice Presidential candidate and answering questions in character. Watch the clip above to hear Fey-as-Palin talk wolves, helicopters, gay marriage and be instantly transported back to "Saturday Night Live" in 2008.

Good afternoon and happy hump day!
Happy birthday to Holly Hunter!
Remember when Hunter made out with Clea DuVall on Saving Grace? Good times.
Singer Michelle Shocked has released an open letter in response to reports that she went on an anti-gay tirade at a recent concert (resulting in a slew of upcoming shows being cancelled). In it, she writes:
I stand accused of forsaking the Lgbt community for a Christianity which is – hear me now - anathema to my understanding of faith. I will no doubt take future flack for saying so. I'm accused of believing that "God hates fags" and that the repeal of Prop 8 will usher in the End Times. Well, if I caused such an absurdity, I am damn sorry. To be clear: I am not now, nor have I ever been, a member of any so-called faith preaching intolerance of anyone.

It's been over a year since we've seen any new material from Between Two Ferns, Zach Galifianakis' Streamy-winning satire of Inside The Actor's Studio-type talk shows. When we last heard from it, Galifianakis had just taken his awkward act to TV to the tune of over one million views. Much to our delight, Between Two Ferns has returned with a special Oscar edition, where Galifianakis stumbles through encounters with some of Hollywood's brightest stars. The new episode, the show's fourteenth overall, was recently posted on Funny or Die and features five Academy Award-nominated actors: Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Watts, Christoph Waltz, Anne Hathaway, and Amy Adams. Each awkward segment is unique in its own way, but Hathaway turns in the most memorable turn as a wasted version of herself. If Best Actress were decided by one's performance on a goofy Zach Galifianakis web series, the Les Miserables lead (and...

Bradley Cooper may be an Oscar nominee now, but at one point he was just an up-and-coming second-year actor with a whole bunch of questions. For Sean Penn. So he went where all actors with questions go: Inside the Actor's Studio. In this clip from 1999, a 24-year-old Bradley takes the mic to ask the Dead Man Walking actor a question about Hurlyburly. Penn's answer? Who really cares, we just like watching Bradley Cooper before he was Bradley Cooper. And ladies? He's a really good listener. Like, he doesn't just listen, he listens. Who knew 12 years later Cooper would have his very own Inside the Actor's Studio episode. Someone go skim through the kids who asked him...

The "Heathers" are back.
Bravo is set to bring the 1980s cult classic, "Heathers," to the small screen in a new scripted series.
The 1988 film "Heathers" starred Winona Ryder as Veronica, who was part of the most popular group of girls at Westerburg High School. Along with Veronica was the evil leader Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), the brainy bulimic Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) and the gullible cheerleader Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk).
The reboot version of "Heathers" will take place in the present day, picking up 20 years after the movie left off. Veronica moves back to Sherwood with her teenage daughter, who enters high school to deal with the next generation of mean girls, the “Ashleys,” daughters of the surviving “Heathers.”
Mark Rizzo ("The Man Date," "Zip") and Jenny Bicks ("The Big C," "Men In Trees") will executive produce the upcoming Bravo series. "Heathers" is a redevelopment of a project originally...

Here's a bitchy theory that I might believe in: Straight men usually aren't very socially intuitive thinkers, so they rarely relate to comic performers who don't, to a certain degree, resemble them. I notice in standup and on Twitter that a majority of straight male comics build their fanbase by specifically proving they relate to their fans, who are largely also straight and male. This, I feel, is the opposite tactic of the comics who are more often adored by gay men and straight women. We tend to like standout performers who represent themselves first and seem to say, "F*ck you if you don't relate to me." We value independence over like-mindedness, and that's why defiant personalities like Madonna, Kathy Griffin, and Bette Davis can be catnip to many of us. (I certainly subscribe to all three of those dames.)

We can agree that Oscar-winning grit sorceress Jane Fonda is the Annie Lennox of movie stars, right? She's about steeliness that gives way to crackling vulnerability. She proclaims, but she's sensitive. She is a teary-eyed empress with her chin held way the hell up. The former Mrs. Ted Turner deserves infinite chances to be kickass, and I'm hoping Newsroom gives one to her. That's why we're here today. To see if Jane is Jane again. Respect.
Here's a short list of what HBO's The Newsroom has put us through without giving us even one appearance from Ms. Fonda: an opening credit sequence longer than Wagner's Ring Cycle, Sam Waterston's drunken cat seriousness, 1,001 monologues about Edward R. Murrow-y integrity, Will McAvoy's (Jeff Daniels) tantrum-y manliness, MacKenzie McHale's (Emily Mortimer) ridiculous shifts from self-empowered professional to caterwauling ex-girlfriend who makes farcical, Amelia Bedelia-like mistakes at work, and lastly -- the star of the show!

The season finale of "Glee" went down last night -- and with most of the cast uncertain of their future on the show, it ended with their characters spread all over the Us.While show creator Ryan Murphy has said anyone who wants to come back next year can come back, it seemed like viewers were saying goodbye to characters like Mercedes, Quinn and even Rachel. Here's where everyone ended up:Following an unsuccessful audition with James Lipton, Finn (Cory Monteith) was rejected from The Actor's Studio. While breaking up with Rachel, he said he's joining the Army.Rachel (Lea Michele) was accepted to Nyada and ended up going to NYC solo.Kurt (Chris Colfer) didn't fare so well. He was rejected to Nyada, but will try to get in again next year.Santana (Naya Rivera) turned down a cheerleading scholarship in Kentucky to pursue her dream of becoming a star in New York City.

Glee Season 3 Finale: A Look Back at McKinley High and Plans for the Future
The graduating seniors said goodbye to McKinley High in the Glee season 3 finale. But before that happened, most of the seniors got a chance to reflect on their time at the school and announce their plans for the future.
Kurt got a nice pep talk from his father, who decided to re-enact Kurt's hilarious "Single Ladies" performance from season 1. Burt Hummel is basically the perfect father. Mercedes and Sam got an opportunity to celebrate her future. After Sam posted that video of her singing on YouTube, she announced that an indie record label had signed her on as a back-up singer. She's heading to Los Angeles to try her hand at becoming a professional singer, while also taking classes at UCLA in her spare time. Mike Chang announced that he got a last-minute scholarship to school in Chicago.

Cory Monteith, a.k.a. the man who plays Finn Hudson on "Glee," is celebrating a momentous occasion -- no, not the high school graduation of his character. Monteith turns 30 on May 11!
Yes, you're a little old to be playing a high schooler once you hit the big 3-0 -- so it's a good thing that Finn is graduating and presumably moving on to New York City where he'll apply to the Actor's Studio.
Monteith hails from Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada, and began acting in 2004 after a wild childhood. Don't worry, he cleaned up his act in rehab at 19 and soon became the lovable TV star we all adore. In addition to acting (and singing and dancing) on "Glee," Monteith also plays the drums in his band, Bonnie Dune.
The actor wrapped his final scenes of Season 3 of "Glee" on the night of May 10, just minutes before his birthday began.

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 3, Episode 16 of Fox's "Glee," entitled "Saturday Night Glee-ver."
I thought I was going to hate this episode, but despite the lame title, "Saturday Night Glee-ver" was one of the best "Glee" episodes of the season.
It wasn't perfect, but for the first time in weeks, there was actually character development, as Mercedes, Santana and Finn finally make post-McKinley decisions. Sure, at times it felt like a Lifetime movie adaptation of "Mamma Mia!" -- too many cookie-cutter, feel-good moments for my taste -- but despite the cheesus, it worked. Mercedes got her groove back, Santana found her groove and Finn finally made an appropriate life decision.
Oh yeah, and holy falsettos!
Also, any episode that starts off with a disco Blaine number gets my stamp of approval -- even if I had no idea what was going on for the first few minutes.

Glee Preview: The Glee Kids Pay Tribute to Whitney Houston
In this week's Glee, Mr. Schue used disco as a way to help some of the directionless kids figure out their dreams. Singling out Mercedes, Santana and Finn as three kids who didn't really have a future plan, he asked them to figure out what they wanted to do after graduation. Mercedes wants to be a musical legend and Sam helped her take the first step by posting one of her performances on YouTube. Santana originally wanted to be famous, but Britney and Sue helped her get a scholarship to university, which will give her more time to figure out what she wants to pursue. Finally, Finn decided he wanted to be an actor and will be accompanying Rachel to New York and applying for the Actor's Studio. Jonathan Groff also returned very briefly as Jesse St. James, the Vocal Adrenaline coach,...

When I read summaries of Criterion Collection films, I usually assume they were authored by some pasty film buff with a cinema studies degree from Bard and a level of pretension that makes Inside the Actor's Studio host James Lipton seem like a homier, more salt-of-the-earth version of Larry the Cable Guy. Today, however, I stand humbly corrected, as the Criterion Collection dudes are clearly funnier than I would've assumed them to be. Otherwise, they would not have been able to execute an April Fool's prank as brilliant as issuing a fake release of the 1990 classic Kindergarten Cop. Because I am assuming that most Nerve readers were born with two eyes and a heart, I'm also assuming that you guys have already seen Kindergarten Cop, so I won't bore you with a tedious summary. I will, however, share the Criterion Collection's take on [...]...

Celebrity Apprentice's second episode saw our remaining candidates going back in time - way back in time to the medieval ages. Inside The Actor's Studio's James Lipton is on hand to introduce the challenge, because he's actually a knight! He even has a suit of armour and a horse! Teams have to devise a 12-15 minute show for Medieval Times and will be judged by the audience. Penn Jillette steps up as the Pm for the men's team, while Lisa Lampanelli is Pm for the women. Two side notes: Mr Trump jokes that if Dayana Mendoza goes naked like Lady Godiva then the men will probably forfeit, while Adam Carolla is missing because he's hosting a wedding back at his home in California. Overview Both teams meet with the Medieval Times show co-ordinator for some hints on what makes a good show. He suggests recreating (more)...
