With Anthony Mackie already locked down for the key role of Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel is now looking to fill out some additional supporting roles in the upcoming sequel. In particular, they are in search of a female lead for the movie, most likely to play a new love interest for Steve Rogers. Deadline reports that directors Joe and Anthony Russo have narrowed their choices down to a shortlist of five young actresses, many of which primarily have TV experience on their resumes. However, this character may not be the only prominent female role in the film: word on the street is that Scarlett Johannson will also make an appearance as Black Widow. Hit the jump to see who's on the shortlist. Although it's not yet clear what role these actresses are vying for, many believe that it will be Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter...

With a career that dates back in the 1950s, Robert Altman started out making industrials and working in television before switching to features in 1970 with "Mash," a film that kicked off a decade where the director flirted with perfection, with classics like "McCabe & Mrs. Miller," "The Long Goodbye," and "Nashville." The 1980's wouldn't be as kind after Altman started the decade with the musical "Popeye," but he would eventually bounce back commercially with 1992's "The Player" and 1993's "Short Cuts" before receiving his fifth Academy Award nomination for directing with 2001's "Gosford Park." The director's career career ended with Altman's death in 2006, and documentarian Ron Mann ("Comic Book Confidential") is planning to examine his career in the upcoming Epix Original Documentary "Altman."
"Altman defined cinema for me — he had an extraordinarily rollicking career," Mann told Variety. The Canadian director is planning to start shooting the doc in the fall, but...

The Stephen Frears-directed “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight” has had no shortage of casting updates since things got underway back in February, with future “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” star Benjamin Walker joining the fold as Kevin Kennedy, a Supreme Court clerk who supported Ali and even wrote briefs that would help to maintain the boxer's status as a conscientious objector of the war, all in this tale of Ali’s trial following his arrest for anti-Vietnam sentiments and behaviour when drafted to serve in the war.
Well now Deadline has the word on a new onslaught of impressive performers, with Danny Glover, Barry Levinson, Pablo Schreiber, Ed Begley Jr., Bob Balaban and Kathleen Chalfant jumping in the ring with the self-proclaimed world’s greatest. You’ll remember that Ali will be presented in archival footage of the case, with Glover playing the legendary Justice Thurgood Marshall, who was the...

Hawaii Five-0 fans wondering how leading man Alex O’Loughlin‘s impending hiatus will impact the series finally have their answer.
TV Guide Magazine has confirmed that O’Loughlin and his alter ago, Steve McGarrett, will only miss one full episode of the CBS cop drama — though, unfortunately, said installment happens to be Five-0‘s buzzy NCIS: La crossover event (airing April 30 and May 1).
A spokesperson for O’Loughlin announced earlier this month that the actor was seeking treatment for prescription pain medication, and would be taking leave from Hawaii Five-0 for an unspecified amount of time.

The Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s Death Of A Salesman came out of the gate and broke the house record for the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. It needed only seven performances in that first week to post a $780,000 gross. The star cast certainly helps–Mike Nichols directing Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amazing-Spiderman star Andrew Garfield and Linda Emond–but it’s a becoming a word of mouth hit and is a hot ticket until its limited run ends June 2, that will most certainly sell out long before that. It shows what can happen when storied subject matter is handled skilfully with experienced directors and strong producers, which to me is the neat thing about the staggering weekend gross of The Hunger Games. Having read that book while Deadline was revealing the construction of that movie from the hiring of Gary Ross as director to the film’s casting, I was intrigued...

The new Film Quarterly is out and, of the four pieces online, the standout for me is Caetlin Benson-Allott's: "Since Marey's motion studies at the end of the 19th century, film has been a tool for providing visible evidence, a record of things seen. The development of digital imaging technology over the past twenty years has transformed that original empirical function. Advancements in CGI enable convincing depictions of things impossible to see in everyday life: dinosaurs, hobbits, viruses. It has become necessary to speak of 'hypervisibility' to describe the way movies can realistically render such previously hard-to-envision phenomena. Steven Soderbergh's Contagion tries to contest this prevailing logic by insisting on the limits of visibility."

You gotta love a good detective story. Hollywood certainly does, and over the years some of the best fictional detectives have made their way onto TV and movie screens, played by actors ranging from Humphrey Bogart to James Garner. We've seen Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe, Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe, and the troubled, broken men of James Ellroy's worlds. One classic gumshoe of the printed page who hasn't gotten his due in a while is Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer, star of over a dozen novels, including The Drowning Pool and The Way Some People Die. Now Deadline reports that Archer will be returning to the big screen in The Galton Case, courtesy of Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver. Lew Archer is an old-school Southern Californian private dick in the vein of Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade. The Galton Case is actually the eighth book in the Archer series,...

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - Pop star-turned-actor Justin Timberlake has been cast as Casablanca Records co-founder Neil Bogart in an upcoming biopic. The film, titled Spinning Gold, will follow Bogart’s rise to success as a record executive who put artists like Kiss, Donna Summer, and the Village People on the map. "This is saga about a young dreamer who started with nothing and came of age in the ’60s and ’70s, believing anything was possible and every risk was worth taking," Bogart’s son and the film’s screenwriter, Tim Bogart, told Deadline. Timberlake will also produce the flick, which comes from Boardwalk Films.

Remember when Justin Timberlake was a musician?
The pop-star-turned-actor's music career might seem like a far-off memory, but an upcoming project might form a nice bridge between Timberlake past and present.
According to Deadline, Timberlake has agreed to star in a biopic about '70s record producer Neil Bogart, who launched the careers of Kiss and disco icons Parliament, Donna Summer, and The Village People, among others on his Casablanca Records label. Titled "Spinning Gold," the project will also mark Timberlake's debut as a movie producer.
The film is written by Bogart's son, writer/producer Tim Bogart, and will chronicle the record producer's path from poor Brooklyn kid to multimillionaire music mogul. Bogart was 39 when he died of cancer in 1982, so Timberlake seems age-appropriate for the role.
"We needed an young actor who can carry this picture," said Tim Bogart of casting Timberlake as a younger version of his father.

Once upon a time, we made fun of Justin Timberlake for acting. Then came "The Social Network" and everyone had to tip their hat to him as something other than a guy bringing sexy back. Now Timberlake appears to be aiming for the kind of gold Jamie Foxx and Reese Witherspoon enjoyed, as he has signed on for a dramatic biopic based on the life of producer Neil Bogart. Junkies of 1970s music know that Bogart was the founder of Casablanca Records. He encouraged the rise of disco, opening many a tender young eye to just who and what The Village People represented. He had Donna Summers on his label. He signed Kiss and made them an Army. He helped bubble-gum pop flourish, and Bogart was on his way to riding the New Wave when he died from cancer at the terribly young age of 39. Bogart's tale is one...

Justin Timberlake is returning to music!
Well, sort of. He's sticking with acting for the time being, but his latest role is one that's closer to his roots than the romantic comedies are (not that he isn't adorable in them, of course).
According to Deadline, Timberlake has signed to play legendary music producer Neil Bogart in a big screen biopic.
You may not know exactly who Bogart is by name, but you certainly know the bands he signed and made into legends -- groups like Kiss, The Village People, Donna Summer and T. Rex. His label, Casablanca Records, was instrumental in ushering in the rise of disco and the bubble-gum pop of the 1970s and 1980s. Without Bogart, we might not have have visions of John Travolta strutting, or people in polyester doing the hustle. And what is a world without "Ymca?" It's a sobering thought.

Shedding his pop star beginnings, Justin Timberlake has been transforming into a Hollywood star the last year. He gave an excellent performance in David Fincher‘s The Social Network, had some fun in Friends with Benefits and Bad Teacher this summer, and will try out action star in Andrew Niccol’s sci-fi flick In Time next month. Deadline reports he will merge his musical past with a new feature in the works.
The actor will portray Neil Bogart, the popular 1970s record producer who first signed Kiss and promoted disco acts like The Village People. The feature will be titled Spinning Gold and Timberlake plans to make his first producing effort. The son of the now-deceased producer, Timothy Scott Bogart, has written the script and one can read the synopsis below.

Wow. You know, they say you should never go back and history, especially your own, should be left well and truly alone but clearly legendary director Ridley Scott doesn’t buy into all that. Right now he is going through a phase of his career where he is eagerly returning to the worlds where his very best movies have come from.
Having made the Gladiator follow-up he always wanted to make with the swords & arrows actioner Robin Hood two years ago, he swiftly returned to the Alien franchise after over thirty years of doing other things with the currently filming Prometheus. Now the news breaks today that Scott has his eyes firmly set on the Blade Runner universe as his next time machine endeavor.

Chicago – Diabolical twins, obsessed journalists and jail-breaking thugs are heading their way to the Music Box Theatre. The Film Noir Foundation’s third installment of “Noir City: Chicago” features no less than sixteen restored 35mm prints of must-see cinematic rarities. Ten of these noir classics have yet to land a DVD release, thus making this festival all the more essential for local cinephiles.
The week-long festival kicks off Friday, Aug. 12, and includes criminally overlooked performances from Hollywood legends such as Humphrey Bogart, Anne Bancroft, Barbara Stanwyck, Olivia de Havilland, Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters and Burt Lancaster. Acclaimed noir historians Alan K. Rode (“Charles McGraw: Biography of a Film Noir Tough Guy”) and Foster Hirsch (“Detours and Lost Highways: A Map of Neo-Noir”) will be presenting the pictures while offering their wealth of historical and filmic insight.

Chicago – Along with sixteen restored 35mm prints of overlooked cinematic gems, the Music Box Theatre’s third installment of “Noir City: Chicago” brings two renowned film historians to the Windy City: Alan K. Rode and Foster Hirsch. Both men serve on the board of directors of the Film Noir Foundation, a non-profit corporation aiming to restore rare noir classics for future generations.
In addition to serving as the co-programmer and co-host of the annual Noir City Hollywood film festival, Rode is also the charter director and treasurer of the Film Noir Foundation as well as the producer, programmer and host of the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival in Palm Springs, California. He garnered acclaim for his book, “Charles McGraw: Biography of a Film Noir Tough Guy,” which followed the titular prolific actor through the rise and fall of the studio system. Since we last heard about Danny Boyle art heist thriller Trance, Scarlett Johannson was set up to play the lead female alongside James McAvoy. However that seems unlikely, but when one door closes another opens. Rosario Dawson is now set to play the female lead and she won’t be alone. Vincent Cassel will also be joining the cast in a supporting role. But as great as this cast is, we won’t be seeing this project for a while as Boyle will be busy working on the Opening Ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
The film is an adaptation of a British 2001 TV film.
An assistant at an auction house masterminds [an art] heist and teams up with a gang of thieves, but suffers a blow to the head and wakes up with amnesia. He is the only one who knows where the painting’s location is and after his continued failure to remember,...

Updated: Michael Mann’s representatives have got in touch with us and say the information regarding Eva Green, Gemma Arterton and Andrew Garfield’s reported attachment to a Robert Capa biopic “was misreported a few months back and was inaccurate then and is still inaccurate today”.
My favourite movie of 2009 was Michael Mann’s gangster epic Public Enemies, though I’ve come to understand that I’m completely in the minority on that one and the veteran’s ambitious decision to shoot a period 30′s movie on High-def was something that many couldn’t get to grips with. Personally I loved the spectacle and how it shook up a tired genre and I’ve been chomping at the bit to hear what his next project will be.
We’ve spoke about a few of them recently, the most exciting clearly being an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s medieval novel Agincourt,...

Since the film adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith‘s horror/classical literature mash up Pride & Prejudice & Zombies was announced back in 2009, two directors have been attached – David O’Russell (The Fighter) and Mike White (writer of School of Rock, Orange County), only to drop out due to scheduling problems. O’Russell’s attempt at the movie even had Natalie Portman set to star. Doomed to development hell, you may think?
Not so, the search for someone to take the hot seat continued, even the novel’s writer Smith (who also wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) considered taking the reins for a while, co-directing with David Katzenberg, but Deadline are reporting that the Lionsgate production is now resting in the hands of Lars and the Real Girl director Craig Gillespie, a front runner since he held talks in February. The studio has told all other aspirants to the directors chair that the race is over.

Warner Bros, Hollywood’s famous home of the classic American gangster picture, the studio that made James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart bigger than the tommy-gun, pin-stripe suit wearing real life villains they were portraying – are hot right now on two projects they hope will revive a forgotten genre. One appropriately titled Tales From The Gangster Squad and the other a straight laced biopic of the notorious Al Capone.

Colin Firth is edging closer to genuine leading man status, thanks in part to big awards season recognition for films like A Single Man and The King's Speech. It's a transformation that will take another big step if he takes the lead role in Gambit, a heist thriller remake scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen. We've reported on the film in the past, most recently when The Last Station director Michael Hoffman came on to direct. Now Deadline [1] says Colin Firth is in talks for the lead role of a cat burglar who wants to rob a billionaire. He enlists the help of a waitress who is a dead ringer for the rich guy's late wife. (Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine played the roles in the '66 original.) Sounds like a perfectly good choice for me. As anything that puts an actor who is very versatile with dialogue into a...

James Franco and Anne Hathaway have been confirmed to co-host the 83rd Academy Awards on February 27, 2011.
Rumors that the Academy asked the two young Hollywood actors broke this morning on Deadline, and has been since confirmed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
Hugh Jackman, who hosted the 81st annual ceremony, turned down an offer to return to the Oscar stage, as he’ll be working on The Wolverine, the follow-up to X-Men Origins: Wolverine that centers on the character’s saga in Japan.
The surprising selections mark yet another attempt for the Academy to keep the three-and-a-half hour broadcast relevant to a younger, hipper audience and continue to strengthen the show’s rebounding ratings. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin tag-teamed a relatively successful broadcast in early 2010, along with a few format changes that trotted out more of Hollywood’s most glamorous glitterati. As Oscar watcher Pete Hammond points out,...

Mel Gibson might be out, but "The Hangover 2" just got another major cameo in the bag.
According to People magazine, former President Bill Clinton will play himself in the sequel to last year's blockbuster comedy, currently filming in Thailand. While Clinton was in the region giving speeches on clean energy and meeting world leaders, he dropped in and shot a brief appearance in the Todd Phillips-directed film. There's no word on what the scene involving the 41st U.S. president is about, but Clinton joins the likes of Mike Tyson, whose Phil Collins-crooning cameo in the first film became one of its most memorable scenes.

There hasn't been a whole lot of good news lately for the adaptation of the popular literary-horror crossover "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." Director David O. Russell ("Three Kings") was set to helm, but recently bailed to take the reins of "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune." And Natalie Portman, who'd been attached to star, stepped down, though she remains involved in a producer role (is there anything this Harvard-educated beauty can't do?).
But suddenly things are looking up. Deadline reports that Scarlett Johansson is potentially on tap to play leading lady Elizabeth Bennett to Bradley Cooper's Mr. Darcy. And, according to Slash Film, directors Neil Marshall ("Doomsday"), David Slade ("The Twilight Saga: Eclipse"), and Mike Newell ("Prince of Persia") are circling the project.
The film, which augments Jane Austen's tale of class and manners with the addition of some killer zombies, has some true potential ... which is...

Mike Fleming at Deadline is reporting Sony appears to be inching closer to casting a lead for its upcoming 3D Untitled Spider-Man Reboot. Word is Columbia execs began reviewing screen tests on Friday (6/25) and while the possibility that more candidates could be thrown into the race remains, here's the long list of actors currently in the running:
Jamie Bell
Billy Elliot, Jumper Anton Yelchin
Star Trek, Terminator Salvation Aaron Johnson
Kick-Ass Andrew Garfield
Never Let Me Go, The Social Network Logan Lerman
Percy Jackson, Gamer Alden Ehrenreich
Tetro Frank Dillane
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Michael Angarano
Sky High
To me, Yelchin seems like a no-brainer to play the young Peter Parker for (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb. He roamed the halls as a high school outsider very nicely in Charlie Bartlett and has certainly become acclimated with working on a massive franchise movie after his role as...

This movie scene from 1952 is only 90 seconds long, and there's no especially topical reason for my running it today, but it might lift the spirits as we contemplate another tough year for newspapers.
The plot of Deadline - USA revolves around the fact that a New York paper, The Day, is to be sold off to a commercial rival within three days. Its editor, played by Humphrey Bogart, seems ready to bow out tamely when one of his reporters is badly beaten up by a racketeer's gang.
The editor then uses the final issues of his paper to crusade against the gangster. How many of us would love to speak Bogart's lines as he gives the nod to publish and be damned? "That's the press, baby, the press, and there's nothing you can do about it, nothing."
Factual point, courtesy of Wikipedia: The Day is loosely based on a New York title,...
