2002's Treasure Planet was a passion project for Aladdin directors John Musker and Ron Clements.
Writer-directors John Musker and Ron Clements have a hell of a track record at Disney. As key figures in the studio’s animation renaissance in the 1990s, they brought The Little Mermaid, Aladdin (the original one), and Hercules to the screen before the House of Mouse finally gave them a crack at their pet project – Treasure Planet, an outer-space adaptation of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island.
Featuring the voice talents of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Hyde Pierce, and Emma Thompson, the 2002 film reimagines Jim Hawkins as the tearaway teenage son of a single mother who obtains a digital treasure map from dying pirate Billy Bones. Fascinated by stories of the fabled Treasure Planet since childhood, Jim jumps at the chance to leave his backwater homeworld and join an outer-space voyage...

Though long embraced by parents as family-friendly safe zones, Disney’s live action films were just as often called out for their squeaky clean posturing and regressive world views.
Fair enough – but as Noah Cross growled, “Politicians, ugly buildings and whores all get respectable if they last long enough” – and a good number of those mild-mannered entertainments, while not exactly ready for the arthouse, are at least worthy of a second look.
Disney Movie Club has released some of those Baby Boomer perennials in sterling Blu ray transfers – unfortunately available to club members only. Here’s part one in a rundown of the more tantalizing items.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel's Fish Tail (2015) is showing April 16 - May 16, 2018 in the United States as part of the series The Unusual Subjects. When I was a child, my dreams had me follow the mysterious shadows of one Long John Silver. I used to sit in my bed in the south of Germany late at night, hundreds of miles away from any sea or real adventures. However, I was under the spell of Robert Louis Stevenson, his written feelings, and those mysterious figures that came from many dangerous journeys undertaken and many more ahead. Emotions lingered on obscure horizons, emotions that I now find only in a kiss or in filmmakers such as Fritz Lang or Jacques Rivette. Nothing related to these feelings can be called "real," but still there are only a few childhood memories more...

Once again, Ryan Gosling‘s poker face is no match for Kate McKinnon when she’s in character.
During the season 43 premiere of Saturday Night Live, the La La Land star was given a chance to redeem himself after getting a case of the giggles during a December 2015 sketch where he played a man who had been abducted by aliens — which apparently was a rather pleasant experience. However, his new hat couldn’t hide him breaking as he listened to McKinnon share how “the cookie crumbled a little different” for her when she was abducted.

Another summer movie season and another Pirates of the Caribbean movie. What? You didn’t know there was yet another in the franchise that wore out its welcome a long time ago? Yes, Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales came and went awfully fast this summer, never a good sign. It played in St. Petersburg for about a week and then vanished. Did anybody see it? I didn’t and I’ve seen a lot of movies this summer. In a summer of Wonder Woman and Dunkirk, as well as Baby Driver, Logan Lucky and Detroit it would be very easy for another Pirates of the Caribbean movie to get lost in the shuffle.
So let’s talk about a real pirate movie, from 1952 Blackbeard the Pirate, directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Robert Newton, Linda Darnell, William Bendix, and Keith Andes. Newton is to pirate movies...

The three alpha pirates left, Calico Jack Rackham, Captain Flint, and Long John Silver had their moments on last night’s penultimate episode of Black Sails. Even Eleanor was back from the grave in a haunting out of focus image as Woodes Rogers was quietly read the riot act by Madi, who brought home the fact his wife’s demise sat squarely on his shoulders for blame. The look on his face reveals this man knows the truth and guilt is reinforcing his cruel nature too. This episode was shrouded in fog, a portent as various parties are all over the storied Skeleton Island....read more...

For all you gentlemen who just watched Black Sails Season 4 Episode 6 in real time with your strong, independent wives, how long did it take for her to tell you: "You see that? That's what he gets for not listening to his wife."
Gov. Woodes Rogers missed that memo — but it's not too late for you, gentlemen.
All Rogers had to do was listen to his better half, Eleanor Guthrie and right now he'd be laying back in Port Royal, sipping a piña colada, under British protection, away from the war with the pirates and waiting for her to show up with a ton of loot.
But no. Instead, the Spanish navy and its ornery sailors — which he invited into Nassau to burn down and rape and pillage as they pleased — killed Eleanor at a supposed safe house.

Whoa! If the last chapter was the lit fuse for a huge explosion this hour, Bang!
Black Sails Season 4 Episode 5 wasn't just an explosion. It was a suspenseful, tense, edge-of-your-seat, thermonuclear detonation.
The writers, actors and director threw more curveballs at the audience than Dodgers' ace lefty pitcher Clayton Kershaw throws to opposing batters.
But instead of a strikeout, "Xxxiii" was a grand slam.
The writing was poetry and the performances were epically Shakespearean. Seriously, how well played was the gamesmanship between Long John Silver and Billy Bones?
That had everyone guessing until almost the last minute what Silver would decide: backstab Flint and reject his deal with Eleanor, and side with Billy, or sell out Billy as a traitor and stay the course with Flint?
What side did you think Silver would take?
And how effective were Madi and Israel Hand in steering Silver to his fateful decision?
Yeah,...

Leave it to Nassau women to achieve what Nassau men can't.
In Black Sails Season 4 Episode 4, a more an informative, necessary bridge to a next chapter than a riveting standalone, that much is clear.
For the better part of the hour, Billy Bones and Israel Hand alternately try to pry apart pirate-liberated slave alliance co-leaders Capt. Flint and Long John Silver. In separate conversations with each leader, Bones and Hand spread seeds of doubt about the other's loyalty.
Flint and Silver even discuss the rifts their haters are trying to create, but when 60 minutes is up, only Guthrie manages to make that happen.
She craftily and suddenly does it by making like an old-fashioned Major League Baseball team's general manager, proposing, negotiating and executing swaps of star talent.
Fresh from orchestrating a captive Max for 20 pirate prisoners deal, she dangled to Flint and Silver that tempting, blockbuster trade offer:

Black Sails may be the testosterone-fueled prequel to an equally male-centric tale of Treasure Island, but make no mistake — a couple of beautiful Nassau women in the cast are bosses in the series, which ends its swashbuckling tale this season. Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie and Jessica Parker Kennedy as Max have commanded fantastic action-filled scenes in this series, which sees the rise of Long John Silver, the continued counsel of Captain Flint and the demise of pirate legends Blackbeard (Edward Teach) and Charles Vane. Despite the preponderance of these meaty male roles, their characters have stayed integral to...read more...

It was yet another powerfully dark hour, with high drama, tension and suspense. The action was fast, furious and fun on Black Sails Season 4 Episode 3 with tons of these surprising, “Oh Snap!” moments:
Flint and company knifing Redcoats just when it looked like Silver was cornered; Rogers (with help) out-dueling Blackbeard; Rackham raising the white flag; Billy Bones saving Flint and Silver when all appeared lost; and finally, Israel Hand whacking Berringer.
But the biggest lesson, if you watch Black Sails online or on TV?
Don’t write checks with your mouth that your ass can’t cash.
Bet on Gov. Goodes Rogers learning that one soon. As in, probably-next-episode soon. Oh yeah, Rogers puffed his chest to Capt. Berringer, about how back in the day as a privateer, he killed 73 Spanish sailors and let one live to tell about it, after they killed his brother with a cheap shot in battle.

Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
On the surface, Black Sails is about pirates and plunder, but really it’s about politics. In a global society obsessed with the silver-tongued manipulators of public office, it’s fitting that today’s pirate show takes our favorite swashbuckling rum-swiggers and turns them into dour bureaucrats immersed in a game of political chess. The final season aims for a dramatic tale of collusion and infighting (cut from the same cloth as shows like Game of Thrones and Vikings, only with less precision), but the first two episodes lay the groundwork in tedious strokes.
Captain Flint and Long John Silver are the prized assets on display and the famous names connecting Black Sails to Robert Stephenson’s Treasure Island (we are in prequel territory, here). But a story of collusion and treachery needs an ensemble cast to keep the game afloat, and Flint...

Our host for tonight is Canadian dreamboat Ryan Gosling, who is best known for memes in which he says “Hey girl” and won’t eat his cereal, and also for being an accomplished actor. Gosling first made a splash as Noah Calhoun in ninth grade sleepover staple The Notebook, then went on to gain acclaim and awards buzz for roles in films such as Half Nelson, Blue Valentine, and Drive. He’s an interesting and fairly versatile actor who consistently comes across as charming (and did I mention Dreamy?), so while it’s a bit of a surprise that this is his first hosting gig, it’s a very welcome one. Cold Open: A Christmas message from Donald and Melania Trump. In the opening sketch of the night, Donald and Melania Trump give another message to America, a recurring bit this season with diminishing returns. When we first saw it in the season premiere,...

(Orson Welles, 1965; Mr Bongo Films, PG)
Throughout his life, Orson Welles was fascinated by Shakespeare – studying and editing the texts (usually pretty drastically), directing them and performing them on the stage and in the cinema. His third and final Shakespeare film, Chimes at Midnight, was the completion of a project first embarked on when a schoolboy in 1930 as Five Kings, a conflation of plays about the Wars of the Roses. It was eventually shot over a year in Spain with money conned out of a Spanish producer, who believed that Welles was simultaneously directing on the same sets and location the Shakespearean Chimes at Midnight (a potentially unprofitable venture) and a new version of Stevenson’s Treasure Island (a far more commercial prospect) with himself as Long John Silver. In fact, not a foot of the adventure movie was made, though Welles did play Long John in 1972 in a rarely seen Spanish-Italian production.

People.com is reporting that actor Rod Taylor died Wednesday at the age of 84 of natural causes.
His daughter Felicia Taylor, a former CNN correspondent, confirmed the news Thursday.
“My dad loved his work. Being an actor was his passion – calling it an honorable art and something he couldn’t live without,” she said in a statement.
“He once said, ‘I am a poor student sitting at the feet of giants, yearning for their wisdom and begging for lessons that might one day make me a complete artist,” she continued, “ ‘so that if all goes well, I may one day sit beside them.”
Born on Jan 11, 1930 in Sydney, Australia, Rod Taylor is best remembered for his starring roles in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963) and George Pal’s The Time Machine (1960). He also provided the voice of Pongo in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians (1961). Taylor also starred in TV’s “The Twilight Zone...

Arthur Darvill has said that none of the Broadchurch cast have been allowed to watch the upcoming second series ahead of broadcast.
The actor, who reprises his role as Reverend Paul Coates in the crime drama, revealed on Good Morning Britain that secrecy surrounding the series is so important that the actors have not been able to see the new episodes in full.
"I haven't seen it. None of us have seen it. We're not allowed to see any of it," he said. "I've seen little bits of it for doing Adr, but not a whole episode. From the little tiny nuggets I've seen it looks amazing.
"There's so many of us in it that we all concentrate on our own little bits, so I can't wait to see everyone else in it."

Starz’s Black Sails has now arrived for UK audiences on Amazon Instant and it has proved a largely enjoyable romp. The show combines the high seas adventure of Pirates of the Caribbean with the political backstabbing and gratuitous violence and nudity of Game of Thrones (albeit with a much lower budget than either) and, if it has thus far failed to quite hit the lofty heights suggested by that combination, there are certainly enough elements in play that could be built on and improved in future. Sure enough a second season has recently been commissioned.
A large part of the selling point of Black Sails lies in its mixing of existent fact and fiction. The main narrative arc interweaves a prequel story for characters from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island – Captain Flint, Long John Silver, Billy Bones – with stories involving real, historical pirates – Charles Vane, Jack Rackham,...

We’re living in a new golden age of television. With stuff like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Dexter and The Wire all hitting our screens within the past ten years, the small screen is now just as big an attraction as the big one.
Penny Dreadful has continued that trend, with its first season having just wrapped. The second has been announced for 2015, so we can start to speculate the public domain characters who might appear next year.
For the uninitiated, the core of the show is Victorian horror. Our ragtag band of protagonists are both original in nature like Vanessa Ives and Ethan Chandler and drawn from famous literary works such as Dr. Frankenstein, Dracula and Dorian Gray.
With a warning for a few minor spoilers here for those who haven’t watched the entire first season yet, let’s put on our speculation caps and guesstimate who could pop up next season.

Treasure Planet
Written by Ron Clements, John Musker and Rob Edwards
Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker
USA, 2002
Treasure Planet should have been one of Disney’s heavy hitters. The modern-day twist on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island had a lot going for it. Pirate adventure in space filled with interstellar ships and mutinies? Check. Stunning visuals that combine traditional 2D and modern 3D animation? Check. A great cast of characters? Well, that depends on who you ask. Treasure Planet clearly wanted to teach its audience that there is greater value in self-discovery than a ship filled with treasure from a thousand worlds. However, when it came time to test the cut of its sails, Treasure Planet left audiences standing on the docks dreaming of what could have been, if only Jim had found a way to save the treasure.
Mind you, this Disney adventure did not fail because those watching are greedy.

Miscasting in films has always been a problem. A producer hires an actor thinking that he or she is perfect for a movie role only to find the opposite is true. Other times a star is hired for his box office draw but ruins an otherwise good movie because he looks completely out of place.
There have been many humdinger miscastings. You only have to laugh at John Wayne’s Genghis Khan (with Mongol moustache and gun-belt) in The Conqueror (1956), giggle at Marlon Brando’s woeful upper class twang as Fletcher Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) and cringe at Dick Van Dyke’s misbegotten cockney accent in Mary Poppins (1964). But as hilarious as these miscastings are, producers at the time didn’t think the same way, until after the event. At least they add a bit of camp value to a mediocre or downright awful movie.

Starz is about to launch a new swashbuckling, high-seas adventure in "Black Sails," a sort-of prequel to "Treasure Island" that sees literary characters Long John Silver and Captain Flint plus real-life pirates Captain Charles Vane, Anne Bonny and Calico Jack Rackham living and working (as it were) in and around Nassau, Bahamas, which is overseen by proprietor Eleanor Guthrie.
Zach McGowan, formerly of Showtime's "Shameless," is Vane, one of the captains determined to find the gold by any means necessary and very much at odds with Silver and Captain Flint. But he tells Zap2it that he doesn't see Vane as the villain of the piece.
"He is definitely not a villain in his own mind," says McGowan, "and I do not see him as a villain. I see him no more as a villain than a lion who eats a gazelle is a villain. This is very much a...

Just when you thought the pirate trend had finally sunk with all hands, Michael Bay comes along. The visionary director/producer behind Transformers and The Island is now bringing us Black Sails, a Starz series featuring nasty pirates and buried treasure. Ahoy, mateys!
Black Sails is a prequel of sorts to Robert Louis Stevenson’s seminal pirate novel Treasure Island. It features the adventures of Captain Flint and his merry band on New Providence Island, many years before the events surrounding peg-legged Long John Silver and young Jim Hawkins. Starring Toby Stevens as the dashing Captain Flint, this first episode was directed by The Descent helmer Neil Marshall (Bay is only an executive producer on the show). We can expect all sorts of exciting pirate shenanigans from this crew of ne’er-do-wells, and probably some nice big explosions as well; this is a Michael Bay product, after all.

"Black Sails," the new Starz pirate drama premiering on Saturday, January 25th at 9pm, is both a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" and executive producer Michael Bay's first venture into television. A week before the series' debut, Starz has put the full first episode online for free -- the premiere, below, was directed by Neil Marshall ("The Descent"), who helmed the similarly naval battle-centric "Blackwater" installment of "Game of Thrones." Starz is bringing a new drama to life when "Black Sails" premieres next weekend. But if you don't want to wait that long, the channel has released the first episode early. The video above is the premiere episode in its entirety.
The swashbuckling show chronicles the adventures of pirates in the early 1700s, or what is referred to as the "golden age" of piracy. You don’t know pirates. You think know pirates after all those hours watching Johnny Depp slurring and scampering around the Caribbean in guyliner. But that’s only because you haven’t seen Starz’ Black Sails yet. The new Treasure Island prequel debuting Jan. 25 is more like a Deadwood with palm trees — more grounded and gritty, yet still delivers steady heaps of swashbuckling. Below showrunner Jonathan Steinberg (Jericho, Human Target) and star Toby Stephens (who plays pirate Captain Flint) take our questions (and if you haven’t watched the Black Sails opening credits, do that immediately).

Ever since em>The Muppet Movie revitalized the Muppet empire, muppet flicks have been making their way to Blu-ray. Muppet Treasure Island and The Great Muppet Caper have both been released on Blu-ray as a part of a new combo pack. When you hear combo pack, you might think you’re getting two movies on two discs. Nope. The second disc is a DVD since both flicks come on one disc. Before you squeal, remember that TV series often have three to four episodes on a single Blu-ray disc, while maintaining the video quality. Unfortunately, that’s not the case here. But, we’ll get to that.

Not even R2D2 or Et can usurp the stump-legged pirate Long John Silver or diminish the excitement of the battle for the hidden treasure
Treasure Island, one of the greatest adventure stories of all times, is 100 years old this month. You might think that we who have left sailing ships and buried treasure far behind and entered the space age would consign such an old chestnut to the dustbins of history.
But youngsters locked into Star Wars and Action Man also read Treasure Island. Why else are there 38 different editions in print in the Us alone and 43 in Great Britain? Why else, in 1977, was the book translated into 29 foreign editions?
The answer is that such a story never really ages or dies, because we are, like it or not, slaves to adventure. Some of us go out and seek it actively, scaling mountains, plumbing the oceans, taking those first giant steps on the moon.

Just when you thought the pirate subgenre was all played out, back it comes in a big way and from a rather surprising source. The Fugitive director Andrew Davis has revealed that he’s working on a contemporary adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic pirate novel Treasure Island.
Doing the rounds for the 20th Anniversary Blu-Ray and DVD of The Fugitive, Davis has had a chance to begin discussing some of his new projects. The adaptation of Treasure Island will be called Thieves Fortune and will take place in Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The hunt will be on for pirate Jean Lafitte’s treasure, presumably melding the original concerns of the novel (a young boy who puts his trust in men that turn out to be pirates) with contemporary concerns. It’s intended to be family-friendly, moving further and further from the more violent films that...

Wallace Beery movies: TCM offers a glimpse into Beery’s extensive filmography (photo: Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery in ‘Min and Bill’) According to the IMDb, the Wallace Beery Filmography features nearly 240 movie titles, including shorts and features, spanning more than three decades, from 1913 to 1949 — the year of his death at age 64. You’ll be able to catch about a dozen of these Wallace Beery movies on Saturday, August 17, 2013, as Turner Classic Movies continues with its "Summer Under the Stars" series. (See “TCM movie schedule: Wallace Beery from Pancho Villa to Long John Silver.”) Wallace Beery, much like fellow veteran Marie Dressler, with whom he co-starred in Min and Bill and its sequel, Tugboat Annie, was a Hollywood anomaly. At age 45, the ugly, coarse-looking actor became a top box-office draw in the United States after languishing in supporting roles, usually playing villains, throughout most of the silent era. Beery and Dressler,...
