Micheline Presle, the French actress whose controversial Devil in the Flesh role was the start of a career that included starring opposite John Garfield, Tyrone Power, Errol Flynn and Paul Newman, has died at 101.
Presle died Wednesday in the Paris suburb of Nogent-sur-Marne, her son-in-law, Olivier Bomsel, told Le Figaro.
Presle portrayed a nurse having an affair with a student (Gérard Philipe) in the World War I drama Devil in the Flesh (1947), which the National Board of Review voted as one of the 10 best films of the year.
She was soon signed by 20th Century Fox, which changed her surname to Prelle and cast her as a café owner who falls in love with a crooked jockey (Garfield) in Jean Negulesco’s Under My Skin (1950). She also starred with Power in the Technicolor war film American Guerilla in the Philippines (1950), and in The Adventures of Captain Fabian (1951).

Presle died Wedneday in the Paris suburb of Nogent-sur-Marne, her son-in-law Olivier Bomsel told Le Figaro.
Presle came to international attention when she portrayed a nurse having an affair with a student (Gérard Philipe) in the World War I drama Devil in the Flesh (1947), which the National Board of Review voted as one of the 10 best films of the year.
Because it featured a woman who took a lover while her husband was away at war, it generated a great deal of discussion.
In 1949, Presle met American actor William Marshall, who had been married to another French star, Michèle Morgan, and followed him to America. They would wed that year in Santa Barbara.

Earlier this week, we heard that Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is the latest director to be attached to helm an adaptation of The Long Walk, a Stephen King novel that was published under the Richard Bachman pen name back in 1979. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that The Long Walk is set up at Lionsgate, with Lawrence in “final talks” to direct. So this will be a continuation of the working relationship Lionsgate and Lawrence have had on the Hunger Game films.
Joe Drake of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group provided the following statement: “When you have enjoyed the strong creative collaboration and success that we have had working with Francis, you want to repeat that experience as much as possible.

He has the Hunger Games prequel :a[The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-hunger-games-the-ballad-of-songbirds-snakes/' } in cinemas now, but with his latest trip to Panem in the rearview, Francis Lawrence can make a start on something else from his extensive To Do list. Or… He can add to that list! According to a new interview with the director in Business Insider, he's also now attached to make the long-gestating adaptation of Stephen King's The Long Walk.

Before there was "The Hunger Games," there was "The Long Walk." So it's perhaps only fitting that "Hunger Games" franchise helmer Francis Lawrence is now attached to direct an adaptation of Stephen King's 1979 dystopian novel. Published under King's pseudonym Richard Bachman, "The Long Walk" is set in a future where teenage boys are forced to walk for miles and miles without rest along U.S. Route 1. If any of the walkers drop below 4 miles per hour for more than 30 seconds, they get a warning. That might not sound too bad, but here's the rub: if anyone gets three warnings, they're shot dead. Essentially, the contestants are forced to walk until they drop. The last surviving walker is then given both a sum of money and a prize of their choice.

An adaptation of The Long Walk, a Stephen King novel that was published under the Richard Bachman pen name back in 1979, has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal was hired to direct the film from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, whose credits include the two most recent Scream movies. While doing the press rounds for his film The Last Voyage of the Demeter earlier this year, Øvredal revealed that he was no longer involved with The Long Walk, and said not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life. Now we know who has replaced him at the helm: Francis Lawrence.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal’s latest film, the Dracula tale The Last Voyage of the Demeter, reached theatres last weekend (you can read our review Here), but unfortunately it didn’t get off to a great start at the box office, pulling in just $7 million. That’s not the only disappointing news there is to share about an Øvredal project, as the director has also revealed that he is no longer attached to an adaptation of The Long Walk, a Stephen King novel that was published under the Richard Bachman pen name back in 1979.

Mexico’s Cuevas de Altamira and Avanti Cinema and Argentina’s Gualicho Cine and Isla Bonita have joined forces to co-produce “Ángeles,” the latest feature from director-producer-writer Paula Markovitch, whose feature film debut, coming-of-age drama “The Prize,” won two Berlin Silver Bears in 2011.
Cuevas de Altamira is Markovitch’s label. A tough drama, its main characters are a poor kid who sells candies in the street and a fifty-something man sunk in despair, said the director.
First directing 1999’s “Perriférico,” a short starring Diego Luna, Markovitch has developed into an influential Latin American cineaste, co-wroting Fernando Eimbcke’s “Duck Season” which swept Guadalajara in 2004 snagging eight awards, and Lorenzo’s Vigas’ 2021 Venice hit, “The Box.”
“Ángeles” will be Markovitch’s fourth feature as director. It explores the unexpected and raw story of David and Ángeles. “One afternoon, David confesses to Ángeles that he’s going to jump off a building and kill himself.

Already eclipsed by James Bond and sexier European films, Paul Newman does his best to energize this derivative but lively spy-chase thriller set during Nobel season, in a Stockholm populated by the glamorous Elke Sommer, Diane Baker, Micheline Presle and Jacqueline Beer. Toss several Hitchcock pictures into a blender, and what comes out is reasonably engaging… and more than a little dated.

For a long time, the Highlander remake was passed between various writers and directors like the cinematic equivalent of a hot potato, which resulted in Lionsgate and Summit’s fantasy actioner being sentenced to a life on the shelf in perpetuity. The dormant project finally showed some signs of life a few years ago though after John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski climbed aboard to direct and develop the reboot.
If you’re not familiar with the property, it’s actually pretty cool. Basically, there are a group of immortals fighting each other for “The Prize” (which is apparently ultimate knowledge and power). As you can imagine, though, immortals are pretty tough to kill, with the only way to be sure being to sever their head from the body, preferably using a brutal broadsword.

Mexico’s Cinema226, run by Marco Antonio Salgado and Sam Guillén, is driving into a raft of Mexico, Argentina and Spain co-productions, playing off the current vibrancy of Mexican film production funding and distribution outlets.
Among the projects are titles which have been standouts at Ventana Sur’s Blood Window, the next film by Mexico-based Argentine filmmaker Paula Markovitch and films by young Mexican and Argentine cineasts which have participated in laboratories and co-production events around the world.
Salgado and Guillén are also tapping into production partnerships with producers based out of Córdoba, which can bring extra film financing to productions beyond federal support from Incaa. Whilst some past incentive lines from Incaa have closed, Córdoba film support, though finite in budget, looks still to be strong.

New York-based Kino Lorber has taken North American rights to “The Chambermaid,” the feature debut of Mexico’s Lila Aviles that took the Best Film and the Warrior of the Press awards at Morelia Intl. Film Festival last week.
“The Chambermaid” will get an U.S. premiere on Nov. 10 at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles. A national theatrical release is scheduled for summer 2019.
Kino Lorber senior vice president Wendy Lidell said, “Using an incredible economy of means, Avilés makes palpable the inner life of an irrepressible soul imbued with dignity by actress Gabriela Cartol, who gives an unforgettable performance. ‘The Chambermaid’ gives new meaning, with a feminist twist, to our idea of the working class hero.”

Presenting the Supporting Actresses of '63. Well well, what have we here? This year's statistical uniqueness (the only time one film ever produced three supporting actress nominees) and the character lineup reads juicier than it actually is - your Fab Five are, get this: a saucy wench, a pious auntie, a disgraced lady, a pillpopping royal, and a stubborn nun.
The Nominees
from left to right: Cilento, Evans, Redman, Rutherford, Skalia
In 1963 Oscar voters went for an all-first-timers nominee list in Supporting Actress. The eldest contenders would soon become Dames (Margaret Rutherford and Edith Evans were both OBEs at the time). Rutherford, the eventual winner, was the only nominee with an extensive film history and she was in the middle of a hot streak with her signature role as Jane Marple which ran across multiple films from through 1961-1965. from left to right: Cilento, Evans, Redman, Rutherford, Skalia
In fact, Agatha Christie had just dedicated her new book "The...

Composer John Powell chats to us about scoring Jason Bourne, working with John Woo, his upcoming work and more.
Few contemporary film composers have made an impact quite like John Powell. From animation to drama to his immediately influential, propulsive Bourne soundtracks, Powell's energetic, emotional and heartfelt blend of symphony orchestra, electronics and percussion make him a singular voice.

So 10 years after I saw The Bourne Ultimatum on the big screen and being electrified by your score I'm sat here talking to you, which is a real privilege. I wondered was there a particular film score that inspired you to become a film composer?...

Joe Dante leads us through Cold War melodrama "The Prize" (1963), starring Paul Newman, Edward G. Robinson and Elke Sommer. Adapted by Ernest Lehman from the Irving Wallace potboiler set during the Nobel Prize ceremonies in Stockholm, Lehman borrows liberally from his own Hitchcock classic "North by Northwest," which also stars Leo G. Carroll. Among a talented comedic cast, future Bond girl Britt Ekland can be seen in her first Hollywood movie in a bit part as a nudist, no less--"A Shot in the Dark" came the following year. Warning Shot and other themes composed by Jerry Goldsmith - Si Zentner
Dutton Vocalion is a company whose soundtracks feature regularly in our printed version of Cinema Retro. Just missing the deadline on this occasion are two superb debut releases, one of which includes Jerry Goldsmith’s excellent score (performed by Si Zentner) for Warning Shot (1967). Originally released on LP (Lst 7498), Vocalion’s new CD (Cdlk 4470) has smartly doubled up the release to include Si Zentner’s 1964 album From Russia With Love (originally released LP Lst 7353). Warning Shot is a relatively short score, but as with the original album, it includes some great interpretations of Goldsmith favourites such as the Von Ryan march, The Prize, A Patch of Blue and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Warning Shot is a film that generally tends to slip under the radar. However, it’s a neat little thriller starring the ever reliable David Janssen...

Elegant and charming supporting actor with more than 200 credits over a 70-year career
Kevin McCarthy, who has died aged 96, notched up more than 70 years as a working actor on stage and screen, with more than 200 film and TV credits. However mundane the material, it was usually enhanced by his lazy charm and natural elegance, his intriguing baritone voice and unconventional good looks – all attributes that might well have led him down the political path of his cousin, senator Eugene McCarthy. As it happened, he preferred to play politicians rather than be one.
He received his first screen credit in Laslo Benedek's version of Death of a Salesman (1951). McCarthy had previously played Biff, one of Willy Loman's disillusioned sons, in the London production of Arthur Miller's play, in 1949. By the time of the movie, he was a youthful-looking 37, with considerable stage experience. Resuming the role of Biff, he held...

Paul Newman in Martin Ritt‘s Hud Twelve Paul Newman movies on Turner Classic Movies on Saturday, Aug. 21, as part of TCM’s "Summer Under the Stars" series. [Paul Newman schedule.] Any rare stuff? Not really. Most Paul Newman movies are widely available. Well, his early television appearances are probably hard to find. Perhaps also The Secret War of Harry Frigg. Or Pocket Money. But TCM won’t be showing any of these. Even so, TCM will be offering some good stuff, most notably the family drama/social commentary Hud (1963), the psychological drama Rachel Rachel (1968), and the Hitchcockian comedy-adventure The Prize (1963). In my view, Hud is one of Newman’s two or three best films and one of the most mature movies to come out of Hollywood in the ’60s. It also has Newman’s most effective pre-1980s performance; he is the selfish, reckless, rudderless Hud, the guy wearing the most dangerous...

Paul Newman, who combined Method training with matinee idol looks to become the personification of the cool '60s rebel in such iconic roles as the reckless Hud, the defiant Cool Hand Luke and the hotshot Butch Cassidy, died Friday. Surrounded by friends and family, including his wife, Joanne Woodward, the actor and philanthropist passed away at his farmhouse home near Wesport, Conn., after a long battle with cancer. He was 83.
In a film career that spanned nearly six decades, Newman received seven Oscar nominations before he was finally presented with an Honorary Oscar in 1986 "in recognition of his many and memorable and compelling screen performances and for his personal integrity and dedication to his craft."
But then he pulled out a trump card of his own, winning the best actor Academy Award the following year for "The Color of Money," in which he reprised the role of pool shark Fast Eddie Felsen,...
