For years, it looked like Mauricio Umansky had been unfaithful in his marriage to Kyle Richards. It was in the tabloids and even made its way onto Rhobh by way of former co-star Lisa Vanderpump. If you want the perfect distillation of the Kristen Stewart aesthetic and ethos, look no further: “I like when things have space to fill. I don’t love perfected items,” she recently told Rolling Stone during the photoshoot for her new cover story. “I really like audience engagement. I love things that have internal lives — even photographs, like the one that we did today. There’s so much behind them.” (You hear that, Chris Ruffo?)
Those ideals inform so many of the books, movies, and musicians Stewart recommended to us.

In the last couple of years we have witnessed the development of people creating their own safe spaces and bubbles. Considering this is the age of streaming, social media and influencers, this should come as no surprise, and you could make the argument that this process has only been propelled by the pandemic. Societies, politics and even systems of education have to figure out a way to deal with this development which may have severe consequences for our lives, with people unable to act compassionately or social with one another as we can see with conversations on social media and also in real life, for example. Given his predilection for characters building their own safe spaces, only to have them see it being destroyed, Japanese director Kenichi Ugana may be a suitable candidate to tackle the issue, which he has done on his recent feature “The Girls”, that premiered recently...

Mary-Kate Olsen has declared that she and her twin sister Ashley hate being called the ‘Olsen twins’ and she finds the label “disappointing” because they have achieved so much as fashion designers. The 37-year-old sisters have worked together since their were toddlers, starring in sitcom ‘Full House’ and making movies as a pair before starting their own fashion company and taking a step back from show business – and Mary-Kate says they both dislike the label they have been given since they were child stars.
She told the Financial Times: “There’s certain words. Like referring to my sister and I as ‘the Olsen twins’ or ‘The Twins’ or ‘The Girls.’ We’re 37 years old. We have had very interesting lives. We work together. We’re business partners. We’re sisters.”
“I think that’s the first thing that comes to mind. How many other people are called ‘the girls’ when they’re designing?...

Jennie of Blackpink has shared a new solo single “You & Me.” Watch the song’s accompanying dance performance video below.
As NME points out, “You & Me” got its live debut back in October 2022, when Blackpink performed it at the first night of their “Born Pink Tour” at the Kspo Dome in Seoul. A remix of the track also made it onto their Coachella setlist, which has inspired the B-side to the new single: “You & Me (Coachella ver),” described by the press release as “a rap-enhanced redux” of the Coachella performance of the track.
“We hope the song becomes a special gift through which fans remember their memories from ‘Born Pink’ tour,'” Yg Entertainment wrote in a statement. Stream both versions of the song via Apple Music below.

Spanish mini-major Filmax has picked up international sales rights to “Teresa,” the new feature by Paula Ortiz, a fictional story turning on the prominent Spanish mystic and religious reformer Saint Teresa of Jesus.
“Teresa” marks the big screen adaptation of Spaniard playwright Juan Mayorga’s stage play ”La lengua en pedazos,” which narrates a meeting between Saint Teresa of Jesus – also known as Teresa de Ávila – and a character called The Inquisitor.
The feature is not a classic biopic, but rather a free adaptation of the text written by Mayorga – a winner of Spain’s National Prize for Dramatic Literature – which in turn, is based on “The Book of Life,” by Saint Teresa herself.
In the movie, Teresa patiently awaits the Inquisitor’s arrival and judgement. His visit and his words will determine her future. They will hold a religious and dialectical duel, where the question will be if she is set free,...

Are you ready for more from The Boys?
If so, we have great news.
The first spinoff of Amazon's successful series is getting fast tracked.
Although I would have been tickled to death to see the first spinoff appropriately called The Girls, it's not to be.
Super sad sigh right here.
Instead, the spinoff will focus on an upcoming group of Supes who are in, of all things, Supe college.
We know what Supe powers do to people as adults, so now we're going to get a chance to see the younger crowd taking a Super-charged pass at things like sex, drugs, and going to class.
It's described as part college show and part Hunger Games as it follows the up-and-comers as they compete to get the best Supe spots around the country in the most sought-after cities.
It sounds a lot like those who attend the FBI Academy...

Swedish screens are challenging the idea that two women talking to each other is diametrically opposed to film quality
Four independent Swedish cinemas now tell audiences if the films they screen pass the Bechdel test – which requires that a film (1) feature two named female characters who (2) talk to each other about (3) something other than men. Films that meet these criteria get a seal of approval, or an A rating.
The test owes its name to the cartoonist Alison Bechdel, whose 1985 Dykes to Watch Out For comic strip drew attention to how few films appeal to viewers who take pleasure in female "sociality" – forms of social bonding between women. Twenty-eight years later cinemas are turning Bechdel's black humour into policy in order to raise consciousness among audiences about gender imbalance. Indeed, their action has prompted huge national and international debate in recent weeks.

Above: 1968 poster for Grand Prix (John Frankenheimer, USA, 1966).
Last weekend I came across a bizarre poster, which you can see below, for Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause: a late 60s Czech design which reimagines James Dean as a long haired, barefoot East European hippie. This got me digging into the work of its author on the estimable and essential Czech movie poster site Terry Posters (named in honor of Terry Gilliam). The artist Eva Galová-Vodrázková was born in 1940 and, after studying at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague, designed numerous film posters between 1966 and 1972 (Terry Posters has forty-two of them on their site). Her bio says she gave up poster design after “normalisation changes in the venture,” whatever that means, and has since worked as a textile designer. What attracted me to her poster work is a certain devil-may-care quality—evidenced in her Rebel—coupled with a powerful sense of composition.

Harriet Andersson, Bibi Andersson, Gunnel Lindblom in The Girls Michael Patrick Kelly’s documentary Operation Lysistrata, Melvin James‘ A Miami Tail, and Mai Zetterling’s The Girls will be screened at the Getty Villa’s Auditorium on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14-15. Admission is free, but a separate ticket is required for each film. Having staged Aristophanes‘ Peace earlier this season, Los Angeles’ Getty Villa continues its celebration of "the father of comedy" with this three-film series based on the Athenian playwright’s best-known work, the anti-war satire Lysistrata, in which the women of Athens and neighboring cities go on a sex strike so as to force their male partners to reconsider their warring habits. Of the three, Mai Zetterling’s The Girls (1968) is the one [...]...
