Pran Kishan Sikand
Pran Kishan Sikand dreamt of becoming a professional photographer. Little did he know that a measly, humble ‘paan’ (betel leaf) would change his life and set him on his destined path. It was 1939 or thereabouts. Pran was at a ‘paan’ shop at Lahore, enjoying a munch with his friends when a stranger approached him and asked whether he wanted to act in films. Pran was amused and asked his name. Stranger introduced himself as Muhammad Walli, a renowned film maker in the flourishing film district of Lahore. He said he was making a Punjabi film and Pran looked a perfect fit for the role of a villain in the film. Pran just brushed him off. Walli kept insisting that he pay a visit to the studio, and pushed a piece of paper with his address into Pran’s hands. The film was Yamla Jat (1940), a runaway hit that year.

Yes, yes, I know, he made his first appearance on the silver screen already 1971 in his father Sunil Dutt's film Reshma Aur Shera – a cute little boy beaming and trying to clap rhythmically in a qawwali scene. But his adult debut film came ten years later: Rocky, premiered on May 8, 1981; not really a success, but it nevertheless made Sanju a new heartthrob in the industry. Especially after he successfully fought his drug addiction in the early 80s and then impressed with his intense performance in Naam (1986), he silenced all the people who much too early had written him off.
In the following years he started a fitness trend which subsequently was followed by many of his colleagues. "Sanjay Dutt was the first to make a macho physique a fashion statement," wrote the Stardust in 1997. "The Deadly Dutt has an animal sexuality about him that emanates as much from his...

Bollywood actor Amrish Puri, who was best known to Western audiences for his role as the evil, bald villain in the blockbuster Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, died Wednesday morning in Mumbai, India, after suffering a brain hemorrhage; he was 72. A veteran of over 200 films, Puri debuted on screens at the age of 39 in romance Reshma aur Shera and went on to establish a career playing wild-eyed, malicious villains that audiences thrilled to see in action; he also played leading roles in Indian art house films for such respected directors as Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani. His offscreen demeanor, as a kind, soft-spoken man, belied his elaborate, over-the-top performances in a number of movies, including his heralded turn in 1987's Mr. India as gang leader Mogambo, the role that defined his career. Though he made innumerable films for the Hindi cinema, Puri was introduced to Western audiences with his scene-stealing turn in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as Mola Ram, the leader of an evil cult who does battle with Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones. Puri shaved his head for the role, and liked the impression it created so much that he kept his bald look afterwards. Despite other international offers, Puri instead concentrated on Hindi cinema and cemented his iconic status in his home country of India. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. --Prepared by IMDb staff...
