To celebrate the release of Basket Case on Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray available from 29th April, we have a Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray to give away to a lucky winner!
The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter, 1982’s Basket Case is a riotous and blood-spattered “midnight movie” experience, now presented for the first time ever on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
Duane Bradley seems like a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed creature who lives in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at a seedy hotel, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation.
Filmed on a shoestring budget against the backdrop of 1980s New York (where it played on the midnight movie circuit for over two-and-a-half years), Basket Case has clawed its way from...

Back in 2012, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong famously had a meltdown during the band’s performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. The band was in the middle of “Basket Case” when organizers gave them the wrap-it-up sign. “Give me a fucking break. One minute left? You’re gonna give me one fucking minute?” Armstrong responded. “Let me tell you something, I’ve been around since 19-fucking-88. And you’re gonna give me one fucking minute? I’m not Justin Bieber, you motherfuckers!” He then proceeded to smash his guitar and walk off the stage.
Following the performance, Armstrong entered rehab for alcohol and prescription pills. Discussing the incident in a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, the singer recalled: “The next morning, I woke up. I asked [my wife] Adrienne, “How bad was it?” She said, “It’s bad.” I called my manager. He said, “You’re getting on a plane, going back...

Green Day scrapped the second verse of “Basket Case” and replaced it with a few bars from the original song demo during their recent performance at the iHeartRadio Music Awards. The Landmark Award recipients opened their set with Saviors track “Bobby Sox” before performing the hybrid version of the Dookie classic.
“Around each other intoxicating their minds/Dancing in the street under suburban lights/They stumbled to the ground without a hurt,” Billie Joe Armstrong sings in place of the original verse about a therapist analyzing his dreams and telling...

We didn’t catch word of this when it happened, but it has been revealed that short filmmaker Adam Cosco recently filed a copyright and breach of contract lawsuit against Malignant director James Wan and his wife Ingrid Bisu, claiming the film plagiarized a screenplay he had written called Little Brother. Thankfully, the details are the lawsuit are just now coming to light because the case has been settled.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cosco claimed that Ryan Turek of Blumhouse had access to his Little Brother script and passed it over to Wan, who then used it as the basis for Malignant. Wan denied ever receiving or reading the script, but the lawsuit pointed out that there were several similarities between the two works. The complaint pointed out that “both screenplays feature a twist that the protagonist has her twin brother absorbed inside her in the form of a malignant tumor,...

Director Frank Henenlotter is a cult horror legend. But after making the cult classics Basket Case, Brain Damage, Basket Case 2, Frankenhooker and finally, Basket Case 3, he disappeared. After 17 years in 2008, he returned and made another film, the black comedy (kinda) body horror Bad Biology. And now, almost another 17 years later again, Bad Biology is getting a 4K Uhd release from Severin Films.
Bad Biology, like the director’s previous work, is not a movie you’ll easily forget:
Driven by biological excess, a man and a woman search for sexual fulfilment, unaware of each other’s existence. Unfortunately, they eventually meet, and the bonding of these two very unusual human beings ends in a god awful love story.

The annual Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala is much like a Rolling Stones tour: For years, those who have been lucky enough to attend wonder if they just saw the last show. And yet somehow, a bit unbelievably, there’s always one more.
Forty years in, the gala was back at the Beverly Hilton once again, remaining the Grammy Week’s marquee people-watching event as an impressive collection of stars including Mariah Carey, Meryl Streep, Cameron Crowe, Julia Garner, Ted Danson, Forest Whitaker, Renee Rapp and many others piled into the hotel ballroom.

Green Day and Jimmy Fallon teamed up for an impromptu concert in a New York subway station, where they played “Basket Case,” “American Idiot,” and songs off their new album, Saviors.
In a video posted to the YouTube page of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Green Day and Fallon are seen donning wig-and-beard disguises before setting up shop underground. As a small crowd began to gather around the band, they broke into a somewhat-humorous cover of Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love.”
Then, as the growing crowd seemed to be figuring out what was happening, Fallon tore off his disguise and properly introduced Green Day, who dove into an upbeat acoustic rendition of their classic hit, “Basket Case.” Watch the video of the reveal below.

As captured on social media earlier this week, Green Day hit the New York City Subway to showcase songs from their new album, Saviors. The punk band joined The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon at the 50th Street station, where they dressed in disguise to perform the band’s hit 1994 “Basket Case” and a cover of Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love.”
Once they started playing, of course, the band stripped off their disguises. Fallon grabbed a tambourine to take part in the performance.

“Don’t want no huddled masses/TikTok and taxes,” Billie Joe Armstrong sings on “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” the opening track of Green Day’s Saviors, echoing the first line of the title track from their Bush-era opus American Idiot. References to Covid and youth brain rot aside, the new album’s overly curt evocations of the cultural moment and slightly anarchic political mantras capture the spirit of the teenage angst that defined the ’90s pop-punk movement—though lyrics like “I’m with stupid and I’m all by myself” toe the line between charmingly irreverent and cringe-worthy.
Pulling influences from classic Cali punk, British Invasion pop, and early rock ‘n’ roll, the album’s sound is as melodic as it is gritty. Tracks like “Dilemma” and “Suzie Chapstick” boast bright, Beach Boys-esque guitar tones complemented by bursts of pop-punk energy. Elsewhere, the band flaunts their ability to...

Actors Alex Winter and Jonah Ray Rodrigues face off as new neighbors in Shudder’s splatter-comedy Destroy All Neighbors, and it’s safe to say that the confrontation escalates to a lethal, gory degree.
In Destroy All Neighbors, Rodrigues stars as William Brown, a neurotic, self-absorbed musician easily distracted from his prog-rock ambitions by an apartment building full of eclectic neighbors. That includes the noisy and grotesque Vlad (Winter), who just moved in next door. When an accidental murder ensues, William’s unwitting reign of terror causes victims to pile up and become undead corpses that further derail his journey toward prog-rock Valhalla.
Contracted: Phase II’s Josh Forbes directed Destroy All Neighbors from a screenplay by Charles Pieper and Jared Logan, with story by Pieper and Mike Benner, and the splatter-comedy arrives on Shudder on January 12, 2024.

Billie Joe Armstrong of the classic rock band Green Day is not one to mince words about President Donald Trump. He wrote a track about Trump even though he thought it was difficult to do so. Armstrong also revealed that the song was inspired by one of the biggest stars of the 1980s.
Billie Joe Armstrong said the ‘paranoia’ Donald Trump creates inspired a Green Day song
During a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, Armstrong discussed the emotions behind Green Day’s song “Father of All…” “I was in this weird kind of depression, and that’s what the song is about,” he revealed. “I was just struggling in life, and I think it has to do with reflecting on the current culture that we’re in. It’s hard to write songs about Trump. With American Idiot, there was a rallying cry. With Trump, it’s this toxicity that’s in our culture,...

Green Day used their performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on Sunday night to make the ABC special’s audience aware of their political views.
During a performance of the group’s 2004 hit “American Idiot,” initially written during George W. Bush’s presidency about the Iraq war, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong changed the lyrics from, “I’m not part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of the Maga agenda.”
The tweak, which the rockers previously made during a performance of the song during the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, seemed directed at former President Donald Trump and his supporters who have embraced his “Make America Great Again” slogan.
The moment has sparked a backlash from a number of social media users, including Trump supporters. Among those going after the band was Hercules star Kevin Sorbo, who wrote, “Punk rock is pro big government.

Making a top ten list of your favourite movies can be difficult, but is it any easier when you narrow that list down to a single decade? IndieWire asked dozens of filmmakers to put together a list of their favourite 80s movies, and the results are as widely varied as the decade itself. Which 80s movies does Bill Hader hold dear to his heart? What are some of Nia DaCosta’s favourites? Can Edgar Wright actually contain himself to just ten movies? What horror movies of the 80s top Eli Roth’s list?
Bill Hader’s (Barry) Favourite 80s Movies:
Thin Blue Line Road Warrior Blood Simple Evil Dead 1&2 Raging Bull Naked Gun The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On The Hit Raising Arizona Crimes and Misdemeanors Blue Velvet Where is the Friends House Pee Wees Big Adventure Midnight Run Come and See Do the Right Thing My Neighbor Totoro Die Hard Paris,...

Malignant (watch it Here) is your worst nightmare. Whenever the mood strikes and I’m looking for a spooky, atmospheric midnight movie to deliver on the thrills and chills, I’ll turn to Malignant to satisfy the craving. It’s a movie that showcases every one of James Wan’s directorial sensibilities and combines what we love about of each of his films. It’s got the sleepy and somber look of Insidious, the cold and foggy lighting of Dead Silence and the utter brutality of Saw– while also giving us the incredible cinematography and unsettling horror of The Conjuring. There’s a specific feeling that Malignant evokes which makes you as intrigued as you are afraid. A specific “sleep walking through your...

Sad news hit this morning that Tony Bennett has died following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. The legendary crooner had one of the longest careers in the history of popular music. His debut LP, Because of You, landed in 1952, and he worked steadily in the studio and on the road until 2021.

A bored executioner teams up with an immortal severed head and her combat maid to solve mysteries and fight monsters.
“You’re one of the monsters.”
Undead Murder Farce takes everything you know about gothic horror and murder mystery detective fiction and then stretches it almost cartoonishly out of proportion like it’s being watched through a funhouse mirror. Think you’ve seen your share of demon slayer stories? Then let’s throw in Jack the Ripper, Arsène Lupin, and Sherlock Holmes for good measure. Tired of the “monster of the week” genre? Well, what if Frankenstein’s Monster and the Phantom of the Opera were in the mix with vampires, werewolves, and every other supernatural creature imaginable? It’s elementary, my dear Renfield.
Oh yeah, and the main character is an immortal severed head.
All of that just scratches the surface of Undead Murder Farce, a supernatural detective anime...

One of the quintessential drive in kinda guys to me is Frank Henenlotter. Not only because of the anointing from the patron saint of Drive-ins himself, Joe Bob Briggs, but also just from a horror core memory. Long before I knew about the fabled 42nd Street in New York and all the magical movies that were shown there, I was introduced to Belial and his brother Duane on grainy VHS from Video Unlimited. That’s the magical part about being a horror fan. My brothers weren’t even particularly fond of the first movie, but knew it was an important piece of independent horror cinema. Shot for 35,000 and released in April of 1982, Basket Case is now enshrined in Moma,...

Horror novelist and Horrornews.net contributor William Burke has launched his new YouTube series, The Cult Movie Museum, offering fans a quick dive into a world of unique, amazing, but often forgotten films.
“I wanted to create a guide for fans of eclectic films that was concise, useful and entertaining. Most of the shows I’ve seen on the YouTube platform are either too long, too sarcastic or just plain mean spirited. Plus, a thirty-minute review of a seventy-minute film is pure self-indulgence. I keep the episodes to around six minutes, so the viewer gets the information they need, while being entertained. Then they can track down the films and make their own choices.”
While The Cult Movie Museum features celebrated films like The Beyond and The Abominable Dr. Phibes, it also spotlights forgotten gems like Lemora: A Child’s Tale of the Supernatural and The Flesh Eaters.

After more than three decades, Frank Henenlotter’s putrid parable for drug addiction hits harder than ever with tons of self-aware bite.
“Splatstick” is an exaggerated horror subgenre that explores grotesque gore that’s so over the top that it begins to border on the point of comedy. Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, and even more contemporary voices in horror like Sion Sono or Terrifier’s Damien Leone are names that are often associated with this bold, bloody genre. Frank Henenlotter is a pivotal name in splatstick low-budget indie horror whose work often goes overlooked, despite its decidedly more outlandish energy. Henenlotter’s greatest claim to fame is his Basket Case trilogy, but it’s Brain Damage that’s actually the deepest film in his oeuvre.
All of Henenlotter’s horror films have very obvious analogues and they aren’t especially deep in their subtext, but there’s still subtext all the same.

The Movie: "Basket Case"
Where You Can Stream It: The Criterion Channel, Tubi, Kanopy, Screambox, Arrow
The Pitch: Backed by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a group of scattered New York artists gathered in a room sometime in 1974 to talk. Their goal was to assemble a loosely organized art collective that would remain in artistic control of its own exhibitions and its own cable TV station. The resulting collective was called Collaborative Projects, or Colab for short. Colab proceeded to put on public variety performances with names like "Income and Wealth Show," "The Batman Show," and "Just Another A**hole Show." The Colab also sponsored a series of feature films that came to be known as the No Wave movement.

Zach Cregger’s Barbarian is one of the surprise horror hits of the year. Combining wicked twists, an unorthodox structure, and a dash of good humor, Barbarian became a word-of-mouth hit that’s now finding an even wider audience thanks to streaming on HBO Max. Fun, but still unsettling at times, Barbarian strikes a campy horror tone that’s both refreshingly irreverent and also cinematically satisfying.
With Spooky Season heading to a close, and Halloween right around the corner, you might be looking for more films that scratch this camp horror itch. If you’re looking for self-serious horror films, this isn’t the list for you. But if you’re looking for something that inspires laughter while you’re watching through the cracks in your fingers, something decidedly Barbarian-esque, check out these creepy classics below.

Nimrod 25 – 25th Anniversary Edition, available Jan. 27 in 5-cd or 3-lp editions, features the original LP alongside a disc of demos from the album’s recording sessions, including three songs — “You Irritate Me,” “Tre Polka” and a cover of Elvis Costello’s “Alison” — that have never been released.

Double the episodes on Week 5 means double the themes — under one new theme — and a double elimination. Got all that? “Dancing with the Stars” will have a two-night event for Stars’ Stories Week: Monday, Oct. 17 will be Most Memorable Year Night and Tuesday, Oct. 18 is Prom Night.
The top 12 will perform on Monday, during which one couple will be eliminated, and the remaining 11 will hit the hardwood on Tuesday, during which a second couple will be axed. So it’s not a double elimination in one episode, but two couples will be gone by the end of Tuesday. This also means one couple won’t get to perform their Prom Night routine.
Tuesday will also include the dance marathon, featuring two styles, the hustle (to “Hot Stuff” by Donna Summer) and the Lindy Hop (to “Jump Jive an’ Wail” by The Brian Setzer Orchestra). Bonus points will be awarded to...

Creature features have an unrivaled ability to straddle genres, often combining the best of thrills and frights, science fiction, and black comedy, sometimes inadvertently. Some succeed better than others. Weak scripts, shoddy effects, and monsters who don't deliver on scares are all components that separate the best monster movies from the other guys. Luckily, with the right combination of cheesy dialogue and wonky technical effects, you can accidentally stumble upon some of the best the genre offers. A shark hellbent on revenge? Check. Deadly slugs? Yeah, I guess. Murder turtles? Okay, sure. Often, the more ridiculous the logline, the bigger the payoff.
Films like "Jaws" and "Alien" introduced the standard for a monster movie: compelling characters, driving action, and some legitimately frightening foes. They inspired a gaggle of repeat offenders and exploiters. Bad shark movies are still being made, unable to understand how "Jaws" did it. Today, we're doing a...

When most people imagine a movie monster, they probably think of one of horror's iconic creatures: a zombie lurching in a graveyard, a vampire hunting its prey, a werewolf transforming in the moonlight. But even the classics occasionally get old. Over the years, horror films have become more adventurous with their premises, expanding the concept of what a "monster" is and can be in cinema.
Maybe the monster is a masked human being with homicidal impulses. Sometimes monsters are personifications of concepts -- like grief, rage, or the fear of losing touch with reality. Evil gingerbread cookies, a rampaging tire, or a carnivorous bed can appear on the screen. There have been some weird horror movie monsters. Lately, filmmakers seem ready to shock and surprise audiences by subverting our expectations. Grab your popcorn, be wary of incoming spoilers, and get ready to be appalled, delighted, and terrified. Here are some...

While the 1970s and 1980s were strong decades for independent horror filmmaking, the 1990s proved to be a somewhat interesting time, as there seemed to be an overall tendency for this realm of the industry to be focused on making sequels and creating franchises out of ’80s horror hits, with a few landmark indie horror projects in the mix as well. And since sequels were so dominant at that time, I thought it only made sense for us to start there for this look back on the history of ’90s indie horror cinema.
After the 1980s proved to be a great time for indie horror, where so many movies ended up being successful due to a combination of theatrical releases and the increasing popularity of home video, it feels like in the decade that followed, many producers working in the independent realm wanted to capitalize on those successes by turning...
