Anyone for tennis?

This was one of the two 'forgotten' episodes of Hammer House of Mystery & Suspense in my ITV region - eventually being shown in the summer of 1985, in tandem with 'Last Video and Testament' (whereas the rest had been screened over the fall/winter season of 1984).

On first viewing, I felt a sense of disappointment, as it wasn't quite on a par with the more classic episodes of this series that I'd seen the previous year - but over more recent viewings I've grown to like it.

Unusually for a HH of M & S, it has flashback scenes from several decades ago - the beginning (using stock footage of the plane) isn't entirely convincing, I have to say - neither are the actors wearing make-up to look like older versions of themselves in some later scenes.

But the creepiness of the actual tennis court itself is well done, and delivers some genuine scares. The quirky camera angles throughout also add to a sense of strangeness and foreboding - and who would think a tennis court could be a scary place?

There are good appearances from the ever-reliable Cyril Shaps as an eccentric 'ghostbuster', and from Hannah Gordon and Isla Blair, who would be familiar faces to British viewers.

Veteran actor Peter Graves is solid too as the older Redmond. While he was in the UK filming this episode, he also filmed spoken on-screen intros for each of the 13 episodes - tagged on for the American audience who saw this show under the banner of 'Fox Mystery Theater'.

All in all maybe not one of the very best, but a good 'supernatural' episode with some memorable scenes and shocks along the way.

First viewing: September 1984 / Second viewing: October 2003

The second `Hammer House Of Mystery And Suspense' episode I ever saw was `Tennis Court'. Odd casting - Peter Graves [better known from as Captain Clarence Oveur from the `Airplane!' movies and the radiant Hannah Gordon [fresh from the heady BBC sitcom `Goodbye Mr Kent' and yet another `Upstairs Downstairs' refugee] played the leading roles. The premise was a haunted tennis court - ostensibly targeted by the restless spirit of Graves' army buddy. A couple of necessary twists never raise this tale above the ordinary. Although there are a couple of saving graces - the not-so-happy ending and the sight of Hannah Gordon in tennis shorts. 5/10

Didn't quite work for me.

A tennis court causes terror and torment, for a family who've been left a house.

I've enjoyed the series, but this episode is without any doubt, the low point, I know it's horror fantasy, and you're made to expect the impossible and unfathomable, but this just doesn't work.

We've had possessed locations before, think of The House that dripped blood, for the most part, that worked, unfortunately this doesn't.

The idea of a demonic tennis court is not without a degree of charm, but the realisation just falls flat, at times it almost feels like a spoof.

I'll credit the visuals, it looks very nice, the explosions look impressive, and seeing that young girl transform on the court was pretty good.

Perhaps this is one that will improve on subsequent viewings, but first time round, just a know.

That forehand is very Steffi Graf, not many hit like that, and there didn't appear to be a lot of room on that baseline.

Pretty average.

5/10.

Scary! At least for kids

I watched Tennis Court in the summer of 1985 (I was 12) at my grandparents' summer house on a small black and white TV, and it scared the SH*T out of me. Later in life, friends my age also state this as one of the most terrifying films ever. If you think the film is mediocre, try showing it to your children (I wasn't traumatized my it, just thrillingly freaked out). It's probably rated for viewers a bit older, but a good scare is never out of place. And I'm sure more timid adults will have trouble sleeping at least if watched under the right conditions. And the film itself is interesting given the little twist (I don't think this spoils the plot) on who may actually be able to haunt somewhere. Is it only the dead?

Game. Set. Fail.

One of the biggest disappointments I ever encountered is the TV-series "Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense". The Hammer movies from the 50s-70s are legendary, and the early 80s series "Hammer House of Horrors" is also fantastic, but this show is a gigantic misfire. The best episodes are mediocre, but most of them are terrible. This one, for instance, is a 75-minutes long movie about a supernaturally possessed tennis court. I kid you not. The unkempt indoor tennis court has memories dating back all the way to WWII, when its owner died in an army plane crash, but the co-pilot survived and ran off with the girlfriend. Forty years later, the court still wants revenge. Or something like that, I wasn't really paying attention. Peter Graves also seems to wonder how ended up here, by the way.

Another episode very much like The twilight zone that blends homicide and peranormal very well thanks to a very classic scheme but with some intuition that renews it a lot. The main idea of the bewitched tennis court is very beautiful and also its evolution and deepening with all the enormous surrounding history is very well done and manages to drag you well into history. This episode also does something that practically no one else in the series does, this episode manages to amaze the viewer thanks to finally some very apt and very beautiful twists that are unexpected realities. In conclusion this episode is a worthy conclusion beyond the average of this series.

Quite effective

Warning: Spoilers
This UK TV show is really a must see in terms of terror, more than horror. Creepy at the most. And this episode makes no exception. The essential of the plot has already been told. So no more to add, except maybe the scene after the scientist has been killed by the tennis court net, and when the woman watches the death filmed by the camera put here before the event by the scientist. We see the whole scene filmed by the same camera as if it was made directly for the shooting, filmed from different angles. That's just nonsense, if you think about it.

But that doesn't annihilate the efficiency of this story. Directed by the UK specialist of crime and terror for TV: Cyril Fränkel.

Good work indeed.
