In his Rolling Stone cover story from this April, Ed Sheeran revealed the existence of another full Aaron Dessner-produced project that came out of the sessions for – (Subtract), which the singer-songwriter released in May. Sheeran didn’t have clear-cut goals for the album at the time. But, like his friend Taylor Swift, it seems he has hit a special stride working with Dessner. Just four months after the release of (Subtract), Autumn Variations is here. It’s Sheeran in just-in-time-for-fall mode, a collection of reflective songs with melodies that...

Independent talent agency 33 & West has signed comedians Masood Boomgaard, Tyler Fischer and Jimmy Dore, TheWrap can exclusively report.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Masood, Jimmy and Tyler to the 33 & West family,” said Peter DeSantis, head of talent & music crossover. “We’ve created an ecosystem at the agency that allows us to properly service their long-term upward trajectory, and a key function for our comedians is our ability to provide film and television opportunities for our comedy roster.”
“Masood is a perfect example of a comedian that started on TikTok and Instagram who is now performing live and headlining their own sold out shows,” said agency co-founder JJ Cassiere.
Boomgaard, who is also known by his alter ego Self-Help Singh, has sold out shows around the world in Singapore, London, Los Angeles, Boston, Australia and Dubai. In 2020, Boomgaard was the first South African comedian to record a lockdown comedy special from his home,...

Corey Taylor confronts a legion of Corey Taylors in the music video for “Beyond,” as a dozen or so men wearing different iterations of the Slipknot singer’s crash-test dummy mask approach him in the desert. Taylor, who’s dressed like a postapocalyptic Captain America in a flag outfit and eyepatch, just smirks and wins them over and leads them all back to the carnival where he and his solo band are rocking their way through the track, which is the first single from his upcoming CMF2 album, due out Sept.

Somewhere in between his Oscar-winning portrayal of a gay lawyer dying of AIDS in "Philadelphia" and his performance as the mild-mannered captain of an Army detachment ordered to rescue the sole surviving son of a family that lost three of their children to the Normandy Invasion in "Saving Private Ryan," Tom Hanks was declared the James Stewart of his generation. The evidence was compelling. As Forrest Gump, astronaut Jim Lovell, and Sheriff Woody, Hanks had come to exemplify all that is right and decent about America. We saw the best of ourselves in his characters, while, off-screen, he exuded good, clean charm whenever he turned up on a talk show or a red carpet. He seemed affable, erudite, and kind. But to call him the Baby Boomer James Stewart was to ignore Stewart's willingness to play hard against type.

Nothing screams "must-see" quite like a new Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaboration. They're the dream duo of modern American cinema, the closest thing we have to a Frank Capra-James Stewart tandem. They've made five films together, and all but one ("The Terminal") are legitimately great.
The only baffling element of their creative partnership is that it didn't happen sooner. Hanks was in his 40s and Spielberg in his 50s when they came together for 1998's devastating World War II epic "Saving Private Ryan." If you're wondering what took so long, Spielberg is right there with you. If the two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker had been able to swing it, he would've loved to direct Hanks in 1993's "Philadelphia."

Yasuke is a groundbreaking new anime that fuses fact and fiction. The six-episode original series streaming on Netflix now is the brainchild of comic artist and animation director LeSean Thomas. The titular role in Yasuke is voiced by Oscar-nominated Lakeith Stanfield who is also one of the producers. Yasuke comes from Japan’s animation house Mappa (Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association) who also produced noteworthy animes like Attack on Titan, Rage of Baphomet, and Punch Line. Grammy-nominated artist Flying Lotus (a.k.a. FlyLo) provides the soundtrack and is also another producer.
Yasuke is somewhat in the same vein as Afro Samurai or Samurai Jack in propelling an iconic Samurai figure into a rich fantasy world.
“It just sits right alongside Afro Samurai and Samurai Jack,” acknowledges Thomas, “They’re going to be compared regardless because those are the only three that are being pushed to the Western entertainment. So,...

A TikToker with political connections, a speedo-clad model with a Zoolander complex and a reality competition veteran with a grudge against Meghan Trainor were among the standout auditions (for better or worse) as American Idol returned to ABC for its 19th season on Sunday.

“American Idol” returns on February 14 for its fourth season on ABC and 19th overall. As always, Ryan Seacrest is the host of this reality competition series. Returning to the judges table are country superstar Luke Bryan, pop princess Katy Perry and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter Lionel Richie.
A huge part of the appeal of “American Idol” are the audition episodes. These make for must-see TV as much for the awful acts as the ones that sound and look like they could go all the way. Over the course of five episodes, we will see the three judges give upwards of 150 contestants that coveted ticket to Hollywood.
By the end of Hollywood Week the judges will have culled these would-be winners down to just 40. Those lucky few made it to the showcase round. Only half of them made the cut. The Top 20 then took turns performing on their own and with celebrity guests.

HBO Max has so far attracted over 12 million subscribers in the first six months of operations, which is a decent number, but it isn’t going to have Netflix, Amazon or Disney Plus quaking in their boots. One of the driving forces behind Warner Bros.’ decision to release their entire slate of 2021 movies on the platform the same day they hit theaters, though, is said to be the desire to gain some ground in the streaming wars, and we should get a much better indication of how the strategy might pan out in the long run when Wonder Woman 1984 debuts on Friday.

In the Before Time, a pandemic and a global shutdown ago, the Batman comics were hurtling towards a huge anniversary issue with a new creative team and a hot new character sending back issue prices through the roof. Punchline was introduced in a cameo in James Tynion IV and Jorge Jimenez’s Batman #89, and the issue immediately flew off the shelves. Then she showed up in Hell Arisen #3 from Tynion and Steve Epting, and that issue also sold like hotcakes. So without knowing much about the character besides a terrific design from Jimenez, Joker’s new second in command is already moving books. But when you learn more about who she is, you start to get an idea of just how important she may be to the comics and to the world.

As stay-at-home orders started to crash over the world at the end of March, Diamond Comics Distributors announced that it would be suspending shipping of new books. Diamond has been functioning essentially as a monopoly for years, so this move meant, for all intents and purposes, the end of new comics releases, and it’s been that way for a month. But now, DC Comics announced that new comics will be hitting shops on April 28th, and the way they’re doing it could be a long-term shift in how we get the comic books we love.

This year has seen the debut of a major new character in the Bat-corner of the DC universe, one who’s been grabbing a lot of headlines. Punchline is the Joker’s latest girlfriend and partner-in-crime, a replacement for former beau Harley Quinn. Intended as the polar opposite of Dr. Quinzel, the silent serial killer has been created by James Tynion IV, Guillem March and Carlo Pagulayan for their current run on Batman, debuting in issue #89.

One of the most intriguing elements of the Joker‘s character is his complex backstory and multiple origins. While we’ve had efforts to tie the villain into Bruce Wayne’s origin story, courtesy of Tim Burton’s Batman, most tales have provided deliberately conflicting accounts, further adding to the character’s mystery. More recently, both the Christopher Nolan Batman series and Joker have muddied where the character came from and who the ‘real’ Joker is. The latest issue of DC’s Batman title has, however, revealed what appears to be a new origin story for the villain that sheds fresh light on him.
Issue #90 of Batman stepped up a plot whereby many of the Dark Knight’s adversaries, including Catwoman, have known of a secret plan to commit a ‘perfect’ crime and take over Gotham City. It’s Catwoman who explains the truth to Bruce, and the role played by the Designer,...

Once again there is a speculator-driven comic coming out this week that forces us to limit sales or change our natural way of doing business.
This week it is Year Of The Villain: Hell Arisen #3.
Here’s the thing: unlike last week’s Batman, where there were a good number of potential people-who-bought-earlier-issues-from-the-rack, my point-of-sale system shows me that virtually none of you bought copies of #1 or #2 from the shelf — this comic was a massive flop. And so, really, the only reason for most of the phone calls and such we’re getting is because we’ve got a bunch of greedy people trying to buy it from us for $4, and flip it for $40+.
I can’t countenance this as a retailer, and so...

The kudos will be handed out Dec. 8 at the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C. The award to “Sesame Street” marks the first time the prestigious laurel has been bestowed on a TV series. The highlights of the ceremony will air Dec. 15 on CBS as it has for the past 42 years.
“The Kennedy Center Honors celebrates icons who, through their artistry, have left an indelible stamp on our collective cultural consciousness,” stated Kennedy Center chairman David Rubenstein. “Earth, Wind & Fire’s hooks and grooves are the foundation of a seminal style that continues to shape our musical landscape; Sally Field has brought us unforgettable characters, both joyous and poignant, for more than five decades; Linda Ronstadt is the defining voice of a generation,...

As I thought about the loss of Penny Marshall earlier this week, something occurred to me. Ron Howard might have given fellow sitcom star Tom Hanks – the “Bosom Buddies” star who also did guest spots on “Happy Days” — his first meaty film role as a leading man in 1984’s “Splash,” in which he charmingly romances Daryl Hannah’s mermaid. But it was Marshall, along with brother Garry, who saw more dramatic potential in the actor who started off doing Shakespeare on stage.
Post-“Splash,” Hanks would be recruited to host “Saturday Night Live,” his first of nine stints and a sign he had arrived. But his follow-up movies such as “Bachelor Party,” “The Man With One Red Shoe,” “Volunteers” and “The Money Pit” were the kind of generic comedies that depended on slapstick and rowdy humor to milk laughs.

Before we get to the meat of the review, I feel like I have to add that I have nothing against visual novels. I’ve watched visual novel animes. I have liked a few of them quite a lot but before Punchline, I had never played a proper visual novel game. Something tells me that this wasn’t the best one to start with.
The story of Punchline is that the main character, Yuta, who has an out of body experience and has to work out how to get his body back from the spirit that is possessing it. You may be asking yourselves ‘What’s so bad about that?’…well, in the process of increasing his spirit abilities to do just that, he has to use his new ghost powers to prank and scare a bunch of young women while avoiding looking at their underwear more than once or else the world will end.

As she said when she collected her second Oscar for Best Actress, Sally Field hasn’t had an orthodox career. Plucked out of a drama class when she was barely out of high school Field was cast as the perky surfer girl Gidget for one season on TV. She then did three seasons in the preposterous series “The Flying Nun.” Not exactly the kind of work that would portend a serious new actress had arrived. In fact at the age of 24, Field found herself to be somewhat of an industry joke.
While many sitcom stars who fell into obscurity, Field managed to turn her career around. She began working with famed acting teacher Lee Strasberg and slowly things started to change for her. She found work in a series of well regarded TV movies and won an Emmy for the miniseries “Sybil” about a child abuse victim that developed 16 different...

The newest “Ice Age” is out next month, and at least a couple critics seem to wish the franchise would hurry up and go extinct. Writing for The Wrap, Alonso Duralde opens his review by calling the series as a whole “so blandly forgettable that parents could probably show an earlier entry to their kids and pretend it’s the new one.” He continues, writing that the fifth installment in the prehistoric saga lacks “laughs, energy and sharp edges in equal degrees to its predecessors” and “takes huge strides in the hotly-contested race to be 2016’s Most Irrelevant Sequel.”

It is humanly impossible to be excited by the idea of a new talk show. When's the last time you sat through an entire talk show monologue? Was it recently? If so, then why? What did you hope to achieve by hearing three jokes about current events? Don't you understand that the internet will compile any worthwhile talk show clips for you in the morning? Come on. Grow up. Luckily, James Corden seemed very aware of boring talk show tropes during his "Late Late Show" debut and did his best to circumvent them. The Tony-winning actor served up a modest but promising first show with the help of guests Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis, who were brilliant and utterly boring (respectively). Kunis spent what seemed like a fortnight on Corden's couch discussing her jewelry designs. Almost bravely dull. To Corden's credit, there were practically no other lowlights to his debut.

We remember four remarkable men we've lost this past week. Cinematographer Takao Saito worked for nearly half a century with Akira Kurosawa and won a Japanese Academy Award. Samuel Goldwyn Jr. "helped create a business model—low production costs, guerrilla marketing—that allowed art-house movies to grow into a powerful cultural and economic force" (New York Times). One of Monsters and Critics’ favorite character actors and comedians has passed. Taylor Negron was 57 years-old.A native Californian, Mr. Negron stood out as the deadpan pizza delivery boy arriving at Jeff Spicoli’s (Sean Penn) high school classroom with Mr. Hand (Ray Walston) in the classic Amy Heckerling film, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” and he appeared with Tom Hanks in the film “Punchline,” as well as villainous role in the film “The Last Boy Scout.” His cousin Chuck Negron made the announcement on YouTube.“I want to inform you that my cousin Taylor Negron just passed away…His mother, his brother […]...

The world lost two famous supporting screen talents this weekend. Firstly, comedian and famed character actor Taylor Negron died at the age of 57 after a long battle with cancer. You may not recognise the name, but his deadpan delivery and complete lack of fear about tackling all sorts of topics will long be remembered.
Negron is best known for numerous bit roles in various films and TV shows including "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "The Last Boy Scout," "Easy Money," "River's Edge," "Punchline," "Angels in the Outfield," "Spy Hard," "Bio-Dome," Chairman of the Board," "The Thin Pink Line," "Stuart Little," "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas ," "The In Crowd," "Loser," "The Hughleys," "So Little Time," "Funky Monkey," "The Aristocrats," "Three Days to Vegas," "Vamps" and more.

You've probably seen "Forrest Gump" so many times in the 20 years since its release (on July 6, 1994) that you can recite the dialogue by heart, starting with the line about life being like a box of chocolates.
You probably know that the film won six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (for Robert Zemeckis), Best Actor (for Tom Hanks), and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Eric Roth). You may even know about the digital trickery that was used to insert Hanks's low-iq Everyman into historical footage of real-life events from the Baby Boom years, or to erase Gary Sinise's legs for his role as double-amputee Lt. Dan.
Still, there's a lot you may not know, including what Forrest really said (in Winston Groom's novel that inspired the film) about life being like a box of chocolates, or what Hanks's Gump actually said at that protest rally, or which famous actors...

Beyoncé, Jay Z and Solange say they are moving on since a video leaked this week of Solange attacking Jay Z in an elevator. "As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it," they say in a statement to The Associated Press Thursday. Splash would be ridiculously expensive and Punchline is a little too obscure, so it makes sense why NBC would order a pilot based on the Tom Hanks's comedy Money Pit, if they wanted or needed to buy a pilot based on a Tom Hanks comedy. Former The Office writer-producer Justin Spitzer penned the pilot, which focuses on a couple dealing with "the challenges of modern romance" while their bathtub plummets through the floor and so forth. Speaking of tumbling bathtubs, the pilot is a multi-cam, which we imagine will make it difficult to portray any of the movie's bigger, stairwell-collapsing physical gags. Exploding electrical outlets, however, NBC can do in spades.

The news about Laura Dern playing Reese Witherspoon's mother made me giggle at first this weekend since she's the right age to play her big sister. But the more I thought of it the more it bugged me. Especially since it came hot on the heels of realizing that Tilda Swinton, who turns 53 in a week or two, had the role originally designed for the legendary Angela Lansbury (who is 88) in Grand Budapest Hotel. To add insult to injury, Alex reminded me on Twitter that Susan Sarandon will be playing Melissa McCarthy's grandmother in the upcoming comedy Tammy. Sarandon is just 24 years older than McCarthy which would make her a fairly young mother of the star but a grandmother? That means she and her fictional daughter were knocked up as pre-teens. Gross!
None of this should be miscontrued as me not enjoying myself some Dern, Sarandon and Swinton!

Happy "Ask a Stupid Question Day"!
In honor of the annual holiday, which falls on September 28 (but is observed on the last school day of Sept.), we were inspired to look to the big screen and ponder some stupid questions regarding our favorite movies.
Well, Ok, as our teachers told us, there's no such thing as a stupid question. Still, there are some imponderables about so many movies that we've always felt too ashamed to ask... All right, maybe there is such a thing. Read on, and decide for yourself.
Feel free to come up with stupid movie questions of your own. We have a feeling there are enough stupid questions out there to make this feature a monthly column. If we like your questions, we'll share them next month. If you have good answers (clever, or at least funny) to our questions, we'll share those, too. And if we can answer yours,...

Most of the time, when we turn on a movie with an actor famously known for being foolish, we expect to get a good laugh or two out of them. There are plenty of actors we can rely on to give us that comedic relief we crave in a movie, and those guys usually don’t let us down. There is no better stress reliever than a really well done comedy movie that goes beyond the toilet humor with the jokes, but one thing that may be even better than that is watching an actor successfully make the transition from comedy to drama.
There are a lot of times where it is done unsuccessfully, so when we do finally get a heartbreaking performance from the most unlikely of candidates, it makes us feel even more fulfilled than it would’ve if a classic serious actor had taken the role. Trusting...

Tom Hanks has a problem with his dressing room.
The two-time Oscar winner and generally agreed-upon national treasure has just arrived backstage at UCLA's Freud Playhouse, dragging a duffel bag in each hand with his wife, Rita Wilson, trailing behind. The smart, talented, gorgeous, super liberal, super gay-loving, and above-all-else consistently great Sally Field turns 66 today. Oh, Sally! Mary Todd Lincoln should be playing you! And John Wilkes Booth should be sitting in the balcony, dropping the gun, and weeping at a live screening of Norma Rae.
I found myself actually daunted at the thought of picking Sally Field's greatest moment, so I thought we could do it together. Here are the nominees for Sally Field's most kickass moment in entertainment, ranked.
10. Don't pretend she wasn't the most realistic mom ever in Mrs. Doubtfire.
9. She was still lovable will spouting the worst jokes in history in Punchline.
8. She redefined "manic" in Soapdish.
7. Behold: The only issue of Playboy I'd ever buy.
6. She voiced a cat named Sassy. Twice.
5. I can't deny the fact that we like her. Right now. We like her.
4. Brothers and Sisters, people. Brothers and Sisters.

In 2012, we mostly think of Tom Hanks as a guy who's funny in his personal life and serious onscreen, but back in the '80s that wasn't quite the case.
In preparation for his role in Punchline, the actor took some swings at doing stand-up comedy himself, and he's actually pretty good.
This footage from a 1987 performance at The Comic Strip in New York features Hanks going off about -- what else -- movies, and has started going viral after being posted here.

You don't hear many people talk about Punchline. The 1987 dramedy about stand-up comedians hoping for their big break stars Tom Hanks at the height of his early career (it hit theaters only a few months after Big). This was a Tom Hanks that was beginning to change, though, moving away from the more overt comedies like Splash, Bachelor Party and The Money Pit in order to attempt material with more emotional weight. And Punchline gave him that, though it also brought Hanks into a sort of darker period in his career. He followed Punchline with The Burbs, Turner & Hooch, Joe Versus the Volcano, The Bonfore of the Vanities and Radio Flyer before reigniting his career with a turn in 1992's A League of Their Own. That lead to Sleepless in Seattle, which brought him...
