From The Twilight Zone to Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who and more, Den Of Geek’s writers revisit the TV episodes that truly terrify them…
It’s Halloween! Icicles are glistening from window sills. Chestnuts are roasting on open fires. North Pole elves are… hang on, no. None of that nice, fluffy stuff is happening. At Halloween, demonic creatures hunt for flesh, monsters creep out of their graves, and TV does its level best to freak us all the hell out.
In the spirit of all that, we asked our writers to select and share the TV episodes, horror or otherwise, that have made them whimper with fear. Here they all are, 31 of them, because, well, at Halloween, we like things to add up to 31.
Note that this isn’t a Top 10, or a Best Of, nor is it listed in order of scariness. It’s a collection of the particular...

Actress Karen Black, star of such films as Five Easy Pieces and Trilogy of Terror died today in Los Angeles. She was 74.
Born in 1939 in Illinois, she studied acting at Northwestern University until she dropped out and moved to New York. Summer stock and theater were Black's staples, eventually debuting on Broadway in 1961. Her first major film role was in Francis Ford Coppola's You're a Big Boy Now. Black is best known to "mainstream" audiences for her roles in films like Five Easy Pieces (a role for which she was nominated for an Oscar), Easy Rider, and Nashville, which represented a time when independent films were emerging as a viable, respectable segment of the film world.
Black's career took a "turn" in 1975 when she took the lead in Trilogy of Terror, a made-for-tv anthology film. (The "turn" reference comes from Hollywood Reporter, which to me comes off dismissive, as if she wasted her career.

For anyone that believes Laremy and I agree too often, you will want to listen to our review of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 as we not only discuss the actual film, but discuss our approach to the film and it goes on for a Long time -- 37 minutes to be exact -- but hopefully it doesn't get too uncomfortable as we metaphorically hug it out in the end. That Twilight, it sure brings out the passion.
Other than that, we discuss Alexander Payne's The Descendants and Happy Feet Two along with our opinions on the return of Ricky Gervais to host the 2012 Golden Globe Awards, the trailers for Mirror Mirror and Brave and even a little Tim Tebow and Natalie Wood.
This is our longest podcast yet and you don't want to miss it as we drone on for an hour and 17 minutes. Yup, a long time,...

"Immortals" and "Mirror Mirror" director Tarsem Singh is showing no signs of slowing down his recent rapid succession of projects says Deadline.
Tarsem is now attached to the noir-style fantasy thriller "Killing On Carnival Row" which was originally set up by producers Arnold and Anne Kopelson six years ago at New Line.
"Clash of the Titans" and "Pacific Rim" writer Travis Beacham's script is set in a future city called Burgue which resembles 18th century London, albeit one populated by both humans and other creatures. It's in this setting that a serial killer is on the loose.
Guillermo Del Toro and Neil Jordan came close to making the film but Singh looks like a more certain option.

One of the most original fantasy screenplays of recent years is picking up more of a change to get eventually made into a movie.
Six years ago would-be screenwriter Travis Beacham made some noise in Hollywood when his spec screenplay Killing on Carnival Row started making the rounds around the town. Set in a dark and disturbing city that resembled 19th century London, except that its population was made up of beings best found in fantasy tales, Beacham's story centered on detectives investigating the brutal and horrific murders of fairies. Killing on Carnival Row was like Seven meets Lord of the Rings, and it caught the attention of a lot of people.
The script sold to producer Arne and Anne Kopelson, and it brought Beacham writing assignments like the remakes of Clash of the Titans, Disney's The Black Hole and the giant monster movie Pacific Rim. Unfortunately, for the past...

We are pleased to announce the first official trailer for visionary director Tarsem Singh’s upcoming enchanted, reimagining of the classic ‘Snow White’ fairy tale Mirror Mirror, starring Oscar® winner Julia Roberts, Lily Collins (The Blind Side), Armie Hammer (The Social Network), Sean Bean (“The Game of Thrones”, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) and Nathan Lane (The Lion King, The Birdcage), has premiered in theaters nationwide. Promising fun, thrills, and adventure for the whole family, Mirror Mirror releases in theaters across North America this spring on March 16.
Director Tarsem Singh (Immortals) rewrites the fairy tale history as a wicked enchantress (Julia Roberts) schemes and scrambles for control of a spirited orphan’s (Lily Collins) throne and the attention of a charming prince (Armie Hammer). When Snow White’s beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen banishes her to the forest,...

Tarsem, or to give him his full name (the director seems to have abandoned his mononame pretensions of late), Tarsem Singh, has had a mixed week. On the plus side, his latest film, swords & sorcery actioner "Immortals," opened to a healthy box office haul of $32 million, despite some poisonous reviews, exceeding most expectations, and likely planting the director firmly on the A-list. On the minus, the trailer for his next film, Snow White tale "Mirror Mirror," debuted to almost universal derision, seeming to immediately undo any suggestion that the commercials veteran, who won acclaim with passion project "The Fall," might become the next Zack Snyder. Or even the next Dominic Sena.

One of Hollywood’s most visual directors has been quite busy lately.
Tarsem Singh’s Immortals opened at #1 at the box office this past weekend, and yesterday we got a look at the trailer for the director’s Mirror Mirror. Now, news comes that Singh is attached to direct fantasy film Killing On Carnival Row. Deadline has the scoop, and describes the script as follows:
The script takes place in the future in a city called the Burgue, which looks a lot like 18th Century London. It is inhabited by humans and other creatures, and a serial killer is on the loose.
Travis Beacham (Clash Of The Titans) wrote the script six years ago, and Guillermo Del Toro and Neil Jordan were attached to direct at various times. Singh’s unique visual style seems particularly suited for a fantasy carnival setting, so this is one to keep on the radar.

Immortals director Tarsem Singh has just attached himself to direct another film project called Killing on Carnival Row. The film project was actually set up six years ago from a script written by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans, Pacific Rim). The project has obviously had a long road to development, and at one point was set up at New Line Cinema with Guillermo Del Toro and Neil Jordan on the list of directors to take it on. The producers now feel Tarsem is the right man for the job, and it's hard to argue.
The movie is described as a noir-style fantasy thriller, and the story "takes place in the future in a city called the Burgue, which looks a lot like 18th Century London. It is inhabited by humans and other creatures, and a serial killer is on the loose." This sounds like it will make for a pretty awesome movie,...

Though he is known for working fast while a movie is in production, Tarsem Singh doesn't have a Steven Soderbergh-level reputation when it comes to developing projects. After the release of his first film, The Cell, in 2000, there was a six year wait for his sophomore effort, The Fall. It then took another five years for Singh to direct his third feature, Immortals, which came out last weekend. That pattern hasn't continued since, though. The director has already completed production on his take on the Snow White fairy tale, Mirror Mirror, which is due out in March, and now he's already setting up his fifth movie. According to Deadline, Tarsem Singh is now attached to direct the film Killing On Carnival Row. The script was written by Travis Beacham, who also wrote Clash of the Titans as well as the upcoming Guillermo del Toro project Pacific Rim (which began...

Forget the damn mirror, it's up to you readers to pick which royal beyotch really is the fairest of them all. Ironically both the queens were front and center for the recently released trailers for Snow White and The Huntsman and Mirror Mirror, so we're sure you have some very strong opinions on which Oscar winning chica does bad best. So who's left you shaking in your booties: Julia Roberts or Charlize Theron? Vote: Snow White Fight: Armie Hammer vs. Chris Hemsworth! First up, there's Lily Collins's feisty foe in the funny flick Mirror Mirror: Julia R. Sure, her gowns, makeup and hair may be fab, but, we're totally not feeling the Erin Brockovich 2.0 shtick. While the Malin Akerman led film Inferno seems to be stuck in development hell, Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard recently replaced Kate Hudson and James Franco in Lovelace, another biopic about infamous porn star Linda Lovelace. Now according to The Associated Press reports that Sharon Stone will play Lovelace's mother in the film that will chronicle Lovelace's place in adult film history as the star of Deep Throat, one of the highest-grossing independent films of all-time which just happened to become the most well known porn film that also served as a gateway to years of victimization in the adult film industry. Since Inferno has been working to get off the ground a little bit longer than Lovelace, I'm surprised both projects are still moving forward. Of course, it wouldn't be Hollywood if we didn't have two similar films competing every other year. Snow White and the Huntsman...

Julia Roberts plays a pretty awful woman in Mirror Mirror.
Relativity Media has released the first official trailer for its upcoming star-studded new take on the fairy tale Snow White, Mirror Mirror. The fantasy film stars Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Sean Bean and Nathan Lane.
Mirror Mirror is described as “a spectacular reimagining of the classic fairy tale” in which an evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright.
This “spirited adventure comedy,” directed by Tarsem Singh (Immortals) is “filled with jealousy, romance and betrayal.” Relatively is hoping that it will “capture the imagination of audiences the world over.”
There’s no mention of any dwarves who sing “Heigh-Ho” but the orphan princess, played by Collins, is said to be rescued from her exile by a group of “diminutive” highway robbers. Roberts plays the Queen.

Wow. Just. Wow. After last week brought the first teaser for Universal's Snow White And The Huntsman, now comes the promo for the competition, Relativity Media's Mirror Mirror. Take a look for yourself below.
This version of the tale sticks a little more closely to the Grimm original than Huntsman, with the evil Queen (Julia Roberts) looking to get rid of the beautiful competition and Snow White (Lily Collins) ending up with the dwarfs. The twist here is that Snow and her enemy are competing for the love of Prince Andrew Alcott (Armie Hammer) and there's a lot more plot around winning his heart. Oh, and the dwarfs are a bandit bunch who eventually help Snow take on the evildoer.
Immortals director Tarsem Singh has described this one as much more light-hearted, and compared to any of his earlier work (or even the far moodier Huntsman), he's not wrong...

We've never really imagined visually acclaimed director Tarsem Singh as the Evil Queen type but the release of the trailer to his next flick Mirror Mirror (included at the bottom of this post) so quickly on the heels of Rupert Sanders Snow White and the Huntsmen trailer (previously discussed) changes that immediately. Suddenly it's remarkably easy -- nay required! -- to imagine Tarsem all fussy, bejewelled and panicky with sweat in front of his own magic mirror when it declares Snow White and the Hunstman the fairest of all new Snow White projects. That's admittedly a small 50/50 type achievement, but still...

For the moment, "Fables" fans are going to have to settle on getting their live-action fairy tale fix from the likes of "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Mirror Mirror" on the big-screen, or "Grimm" and "Once Upon a Time" on the small one. At the very least, the most recently rumored man to bring "Fables" to theaters — none other than "Harry Potter" director David Yates — is not involved with the project.
MTV News caught up with Yates last Saturday (November 12) at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where he was promoting the DVD release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2." After conversing with him earlier in the weekend about his decision not to go forward with adapting Stephen King's "The Stand" for Warner Bros., Yates took some time to crush rumors that he's involved with "Fables."

The battle for the fairest Snow White film of them all is getting heated.
Last week, Snow White And The Huntsman debuted its first trailer, and it was amazing. An epic action fantasy movie with the Snow White tale as its backdrop, it was everything a modern retelling should be.
Mirror Mirror looks to be taking a decidedly different route. Whereas Huntsman definitely went the more serious, world-in-peril route, the Mirror trailer brings the slapstick, courtesy of Yahoo. There’s sight gags, pop culture references, and Julia Roberts bemoaning the onset of old age (her shtick with Nathan Lane brings to mind the dynamic between Susan Sarandon’s evil queen and Timothy Spall’s henchman).
And yes, you’re not imagining things. There actually was a point in the trailer where, in referencing one of the Seven Dwarfs, a character says “Say hello to my little friend.” Wow. Just, wow.

From their seemingly simultaneous inception, much of the media’s focus (including my own) has been on the duel between Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman and Relativity Media’s own Snow White story, Mirror Mirror. But you won’t hear me compare the two any longer. Their respective trailers are out, and one seems to have raised the white flag. Well, it’s a perceived forfeit given how laughably terrible Mirror Mirror looks.
Last week, the trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman, which stars Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, and Thor (Chris Hemsworth), looks like it will fulfill the promise of an epic Lord of the Rings-inspired adventure, with swords and shields instead of poisoned apples.

One thing just became very clear: The ongoing staredown between Snow White And The Huntsmen and Mirror Mirror is now just a matter of competing studios racing to the gate with rival Snow White projects but it's also one of totally different styles. Will Universal win by taking the source material dark and violent? Or will it be Relativity, who are going light and frothy?Director Tarsem Singh is currently riding high with Immortals perched in the number one box office spot and he'll be hoping to build on that success with Mirror Mirror. Tarsem's visual style is clearly intact - though, again, more CGI enhanced than I'd have hoped - while, for the first time, he dips into the world of comedy. Very silly,...

Reactions to the just-released trailer for 'Mirror Mirror' -- next year's adaptation of the 'Snow White' fairy tale starring Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen -- have been focused on how campy the whole thing looks. There's slapstick, corny puns and a pedigreed actress vamping it up to levels so cheesy, you'll need to get your cholesterol levels checked afterward. So yes, 'Mirror Mirror' may be an over-the-top circus, but is that necessarily a bad thing? Probably not, especially if the trailer follows through on its seeming promise to make 'Mirror Mirror' the modern-day version of 'Faerie Tale Theatre.'

The first trailer for " Mirror Mirror " is here -- and it couldn't be more different from the other Snow White flick with Kristen Stewart . Featuring Julia Roberts and Lily Collins as the Evil Queen and the title character, " Mirror Mirror " is definitely a more light-hearted affair -- with bits of comedy coming from Nathan Lane , Armie Hammer 's Prince and the seven dwarfs. The trailer also offers up stunning visuals, which comes as no surprise considering the director, Tarsem Singh , is the same guy who did the visually-pleasing " Immortals ," " The Fall " and " The Cell ." It's a far cry from the action-packed trailer we saw last week from " Snow White & The Huntsman ," with Charlize Theron owning the Evil Queen role and K-Stew donning body armor as a Joan of Arc -like beauty. Re-watch that trailer below: Which one are you more excited to see? Sound off below! Read more...

Last week we brought you the trailer for a Snow White movie. Today I give you another trailer, for another Snow White movie, entitled Mirror Mirror. Compare the 2 trailers (link above) but this one seems a bit all over the place, and while it might be unfair to judge something from a trailer, it seems to be grabbing influences from everywhere. Theres a Kubrick style influence in there, as there is a Tim Burton one and see can you spot the George Lucas Naboo influence!!! That said, Julia Roberts looks like she’s having fun…sort of. Which one do you prefer? Synopsis: A dark twist on the classic fairy tale, in which Snow White and the seven dwarfs look to reclaim their destroyed kingdom. # via Yahoo Movies...

Just a couple of weeks ago, Relativity Media finally decided on an official title for their Tarsem Singh (Immortals) directed Snow White film, and over the past couple of months we’ve brought you a bevy of pictures from the movie that showed some impressive design and costumes, but didn’t really indicate the tone of the forthcoming film.
Now, Relativity has released the first trailer for Mirror Mirror starring Lily Collins and it draws a very clear line of distinction between itself and Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Check it out below and let us know what you think in the comments.

It's almost like a meta-comment on the fairytale itself: Two "Snow White" adaptations, both competing for the top spot. The first, "Snow White and the Huntsman," imagines a haunting tale with an armor-clad Kristen Stewart and the second, "Mirror, Mirror," is a light-hearted, technicolor fairytale that feels like its goofy cousin.
Which is the most ubiquitous of them all?
Sure,"Snow White and the Huntsman" looks cool and is sure to bring in more of a male audience than most fairytales. But let's not discount the value of humor!
"Mirror Mirror" imagines a play-like story (that feels a bit like a middle school production) with over-the-top costumes and a quippy, strapped-for-cash Julia Roberts stealing the show.
Nathan Lane adds a bit of vaudeville-loveliness, though we're half expecting some "Birdcage" lines to slip out ("one does want a hint of color, your majesty!")
And while Armie Hammer and Lilly Collins sure look the part,...

Hollywoodnews.com: Once upon a time, rival Snow White pictures race toward theaters to capture audiences’ attentions with their unique spins on a classic fairy tale. A-list talents – from Julia Roberts to Kristen Stewart – lined up to participate. Which effort would be the fairest of them all?
Days after Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” — starring Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron – revealed its first action-packed trailer, Relativity’s planned “Mirror Mirror” answered with a clip that suggests broad comedy … particularly from its seven dwarves.
We have it below.
In “Mirror,” director Tarsem Singh (“Immortals”) focuses on an Evil (and jealous) Queen (Roberts) who sets out to drain Snow White’s lifeblood through what appears to be Bollywood song-and-dance routines. Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane provide broad comic relief as a prince and royal servant, while Lily Collins of “The Blind Side” plays the maiden Snow White.

Trailer for Mirror Mirror, starring Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane Tarsem Singh, director of Immortals, the current number one movie in America, helms from the writing by Melisa Wallack and Jason Keller. The Relativity Media fantasy adventure opens March 6th and also includes Mare Winningham, Sean Bean and Michael Lernier. After seeing the trailer (and left very impressed) for Universal's take on Snow White - Snow White and the Huntstman; a much darker, action-thriller-like approach, I must say I was left equally charmed by the trailr for Mirror Mirror; a warmer, romantic comedy/adventure-inclined take. Both seem well-worthy of viewing. Bernie Goldman, Ryan Kavanaugh and Brett Ratner produce while John Cheng, Jamie Marshall, Josh Pate, Tucker Tooley, Tommy Turtle and Jeff G. Waxman serve as executive producers.

When the trailer for the first of the two upcoming Snow White movies,"Snow White and the Huntsman" was released, the buzz was pretty fantastic. From the melting magic mirror to Kristen Stewart's armor, the first reviews to hit the net were very positive.
Not so with the second offering from director Tarsem Singh, "Mirror Mirror." Starring Julia Roberts as a kind of dopey, supposed-to-be-funny Evil Queen, a dippy sounding Lilly Collins as Snow White and the normally great Armie Hammer as the Prince, this film is obviously meant for kids. But even the small set aren't going to like anything more than the costumes.
Yes, this film has pretty dresses galore, but it's also got Nathan Lane camping it up (but without any funny lines) and Roberts attempting and failing at a British accent. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think.

The other day brought a pretty impressive (and badass) Snow White and the Huntsman trailer that promised to take the classic fairytale in a direction that involved Chris Hemsworth killing people in the middle of a forest with axes and swords. Nice. And now the first trailer for the other Snow White movie -- recently named Mirror Mirror -- has arrived, and it's completely different from the Kristen Stewart/Chris Hemsworth flick. That's the good news. You will not be seeing the same film if you see both of these, no sir. The bad news is we're not so hot on this Mirror Mirror trailer, which appears to feature a film-stealing performance from Julia Roberts as the uptight, over-the-top, annoyingly egotistical wicked queen of the giant, obnoxious dresses...

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest trailer of them all? Fair question to ask now with the release of Relativity Media's first peek at their comic fantasy "Mirror Mirror," which finds itself in direct conflict with the recently-released first trailer for "Snow White and the Huntsman," a far more sober-minded take on fairy-tale reality. Today's trailer is interesting, especially in light of the idea that distributor Relativity Media is dealing with the morning-after fallout from the release of "Immortals," their big Greek mythology-as-modern-action-movie that was also directed by Tarsem Singh, who Relativity has bet big on. The idea that...

So when director Tarsem Singh called his Snow White movie “sickening kiddie”, man, he wasn’t kidding around. One look at the trailer for “Mirror Mirror” and you gotta admit, the dude was being completely honest. If you’ve seen Singh’s “Immortals”, then you’ll be kind of shocked by what he’s done here. The two films may share some similar visual flairs, but they are polar opposites in terms of tone. Heck, the other Snow White movie, Rupert Sanders’ “Snow White and the Huntsman” looked more like Singh’s “Immortals” than “Mirror Mirror”. Take a gander at the trailer for “Mirror Mirror” below and see if you disagree. Wow. Just… Wow. After last week brought the first teaser for Universal’s Snow White And The Huntsman, now comes the promo for the competition, Relativity Media’s Mirror Mirror. Take a look for yourself below. brightcove.createExperiences();This version of the tale sticks a little more closely to the Grimm original than Huntsman, with the evil Queen (Julia Roberts) looking to get rid of the beautiful competition and Snow White (Lily Collins) ending up with the dwarfs. The twist here is that Snow and her enemy are competing for the love of Prince Andrew Alcott (Armie Hammer) and there’s a lot more plot around winning his heart. Oh, and the dwarfs are a bandit bunch who eventually help Snow take on the evildoer.Immortals director Tarsem Singh has described this one as much more light-hearted, and compared to any of his earlier work (or even the far moodier...
