The BBC’s latest Agatha Christie adaptation concluded last night ahead of ITV’s Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? from over the Easter Weekend.
Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy, starring Industry’s David Jonsson as an amateur sleuth working with Rings of Power star Morfydd Clark, was watched by 2.8M viewers last night, losing 800,000 from Wednesday’s opener. Both episodes launched on BBC iPlayer on Wednesday morning so had been available for some time prior to linear launch.
One of the flagship shows of the BBC Christmas schedule, Murder is Easy was the sixth Christie adaptation over the past decade after a landmark deal with Agatha Christie Productions Limited, and the first not to be penned by Sarah Phelps, with Siân Ejiwunmi-Le Berre taking on writing duties.
Produced by Mammoth Screen, Murder is Easy followed Luke Fitzwilliam (Jonsson), a Nigerian attaché on his way to Whitehall when he meets...

When Star Trek returned to television screens after two decades in 1987, it looked very different from its predecessor. Gone were James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Bones, most of whom planned to return in the original sequel series Star Trek: Phase II. In their place stood a bald Shakespearean actor, the breakout star of the television miniseries Roots, and a member of Muppet creator Jim Henson’s team.
From those unlikely beginnings, Star Trek: The Next Generation grew to match and, for some, exceed the original series. Much of that success came from the cast, who had a far easier camaraderie than their predecessors and, some might argue, a more impressive resume. Before and after Trek, these actors became beloved figures in genre cinema and television, proving that they are even more than the crew who boldly went where no one had gone before.

Agatha Christie was the master of the perfectly constructed mystery; Oscar winner Hildur Guðnadóttir is an avant-garde cellist-composer. Yet the two meet to spine-tingling results for Kenneth Branagh’s third Hercule Poirot mystery, “A Haunting in Venice,” a loose adaptation of Christie’s “Hallowe’en Party.”
As it turns out, there’s a very good reason why Guðnadóttir might find pleasure in Christie’s work. “My grandmother, who was one of the first women doctors in Iceland and a brilliant virologist, always said that the only way to get a tiny break from your mind is to read a good detective novel or crime story,” Guðnadóttir told IndieWire.
“So, since I was very young, I have lived by this advice,” Guðnadóttir said. “And I have always wanted to sink my teeth into an Agatha Christie adaptation. When Ken approached me about this one, he was really clear from the get-go...

Kenneth Branagh’s second Agatha Christie film Death on the Nile, did not have a smooth ride. Its release was delayed several times due to first Disney buying the studio that made the film, 20th Century Fox, and then the Covid pandemic, and its cast turned out to be a Pandora’s Box of, at best, bad PR and at worst, criminal allegations.
Back in 2020 then, when Branagh was filming his autobiographically inspired family drama, Belfast, a third Hercule Poirot film wasn’t necessarily a given. Though Agatha Christie’s estate and Branagh were keen to make further sequels to 2017 hit Murder on the Orient Express, the next Christie movie had yet to be greenlit.
That uncertainty inspired Branagh to tuck a Poirot Easter Egg into Belfast as “an offering to the gods,” as he told The Hollywood Reporter. “They can tell us, in the end, if we’ll be allowed to make it.

Agatha Christie fans will delight in A Haunting In Venice, because Kenneth Branagh really hits the mark with this one.
Branagh has directed and starred a few of these Christie classic mysteries as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, featuring star casts and a big, splashy out-sized approach (including Branagh version of Poirot’s famous mustache). Those films have been based on very familiar Agatha Christie mysteries, the ones that have been done, on big screen and small, many times before over the years, which meant they invited comparison, sometimes unfavorable, to some stellar films and productions.
With A Haunting In Venice, Branagh takes a different tack. This Agatha Christie mystery film is based on a less-familiar Poirot mystery, Christie’s “Hallowe’en Party,...

Plot: While on an early retirement, famed private detective Hercule Poirot finds himself lured back into the world of mysteries. Specifically one fueled by the occult and invisible haunts that go bump in the night.
Review: Kenneth Branagh’s cinematic career began with the Bard. The director’s debut was his bold take on William Shakespeare’s Henry V. The film garnered massive buzz, leading to an Academy Award nomination for his performance and directorial efforts. The praise was so impressive that Branagh was awarded the BAFTA for Best Director. He followed up his early career with a feature film version of Much Ado About Nothing a few years later. And now, with the recent Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and the upcoming A Haunting in Venice, the man who reawakened Shakespeare is bringing us the gifts of an Agatha Christie cinematic universe. Kenneth Branagh is back once again as Detective Hercule Poirot in a brand new Agatha Christie adaptation. "A Haunting in Venice" is the third interpretation of Christie's work by Branagh in the past several years, with the actor and director taking on a lesser-known book by the author for a more overtly horror-driven tale. With a stacked A-list cast that includes the likes of Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, and Michelle Yeoh, this is one of the most star-studded films of the fall season.
Following 2017's "Murder on the Orient Express" and 2022's "Death on the Nile," this latest Poirot mystery is set in post-World War II Venice on All Hallows' Eve. Now retired and living in exile in the one of world's most glamorous cities, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is once again thrust into the world...

Murder mysteries, particularly those of the Agatha Christie variety, tend to be feasts for actors, affording them the chance to play colorful, eccentric, and often more than a little bit sleazy characters who may or may not like to dabble in homicide on the side. Such was the case with director Kenneth Branagh's first two films in his Hercule Poirot cinematic universe, "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Death on the Nile." For his third go at adapting Christie's super-sleuth for the big screen, "A Haunting in Venice," Branagh has once again surrounded himself (and his ginormous curly mustache) as Poirot with a cast that represents the cream of the crop when it comes to character actors working today.
"A Haunting in Venice" (you can read /Film's review here) adapts one of Christie's lesser-known Poirot novels, "Hallowe'en Party," in order to put something of a horror-tinged spin on your average Poirot adventure.

Like Agatha Christie herself, Kenneth Branagh found a reliable formula for mysteries. In his two previous adaptations of Christie novels, he directed and played the cerebral detective Hercule Poirot amid a star-filled cast, in an exotic location with at least one killer on the loose. Murder on the Orient Express (2017), with Michelle Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp, had an enjoyably retro, over-the-top style. Death on the Nile (2022) was a bit less starry and diverting.
Now, A Haunting in Venice sets a definite pattern of diminishing returns. The new film is much pokier in its pacing, with duller characters. Despite some highlights, including Branagh in top form as an even more somber than usual Poirot, the film is watchable but it is also something lethal to a mystery: uninvolving.
The story takes place in 1947 and is very loosely based on a lesser-known, late-career Christie novel, Hallowe’en Party (1969), altering the plot, changing...

It was clear the days of the Big Four networks dominating the Emmys were slowly coming to an end 20 years ago; however, despite cable networks starting to gain momentum (with two receiving their first major wins), NBC and CBS still made a strong showing at the 55th Emmy Awards on September 21, 2003. HBO came into the night with a strong 53 major nominations, while NBC had 38 and CBS had 28; in the end, HBO and CBS tied with eight majors awards each and NBC trailed with six. Garry Shandling opened the event with a comedic monologue, while numerous presenters, including Ellen DeGeneres, George Lopez, Conan O’Brien, Martin Short and Wanda Sykes, carried the rest of the show without a host. Read on for our Emmys flashback 20 years ago to 2003.

We’re still knee deep in the current box office slump, with five weeks left until Halloween Ends carries us out of it. However, after a better than expected 42.3 million overall box office last weekend (a 24 drop) and solid buzz on this weekend’s The Woman King and next weekend’s Don't Worry Darling, it looks like we may be able to weather the storm without hitting a new low overall weekend low for the year (January 28-30’s 34.9 million gross is the number to beat). This would only be a minor consolation, and we may not see a single weekend even get over 60 million until October 14-16, but having a few doubles and triples will tide theaters over until the upcoming season of homeruns and grand slams.
The biggest release this weekend is Sony/TriStar’s The Woman King, which should open in the mid teens from 3,700 theaters (including...

It’s in the nature of cinema that if a hugely popular and beloved movie is grandiose enough, the sequel to it almost has to try to top it in a go-big-or-go-home way. For a long time, each new James Bond adventure was more lavishly scaled, baroque, and stunt-tastic than the last. “The Godfather Part II” was darker and even longer than “The Godfather,” “The Empire Strikes Back” enlarged the awesomeness of “Star Wars,” and “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” made the first “Terminator” look like a minimalist trinket.
So how does that apply to “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”? Three years ago, Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” was a seamlessly debonair retro whodunit, set in the mansion of a murdered mystery novelist, that not only evoked the edge-of-your-brain storytelling panache of Agatha Christie but expanded the Christie genre into something delectable in its meta cleverness. Lengthy running times have largely confined the films of Filipino director Lav Diaz to the festival circuit: His breakthrough “Evolution of a Filipino Family” was shot over 10 years and clocked in at over 10 hours, and subsequent features like “Melancholia” and “Norte, the End of History” followed suit. Diaz has been categorized as a practitioner of “slow cinema,” and this has made his work sound even more forbidding outside hardcore cinephile circles.

James Ponsoldt is expecting this question. Why did the guy who made films like “Smashed,” “The Spectacular Now,” and “The End of the Tour” — dark, knowing dramas about messed-up adults, typically with substance abuse problems and a host of neuroses — turn his attention to “Summering,” a film about four tween girls in the waning days of their favorite season?
He’s got the answer in hand: He’s a parent of three kids, his wife Megan works in the public-school system, and this is the stuff he wants to share with his family.
But the real answer? It’s still a James Ponsoldt film. It’s not as dark as its predecessors, but the filmmaker is still using his craft to ask some very deep questions. “Summering” is, after all, about a group of girls who discover a very dead body and must grapple with what to do next.

Dale Dickey is not jaded, even after nearly three decades in Hollywood. The actress’ earnest humility, infectious curiosity, and unpretentiousness when talking about her craft and decades-long career would feel refreshing from anyone, let alone someone who has been a successful working thespian in film and TV for nearly thirty years. The Indie Spirit winner has dozens of credits to her name, in projects of all genres and sizes, including “Winter’s Bone,” “Breaking Bad,” “True Blood,” and “Palm Springs.” But now she has a new one to add to the resume: leading lady.
Known for portraying memorable, hard-scrabble women, the character actress is finally breaking untraveled ground with her first on-camera lead role in the tender-hearted indie romance “A Love Song,” director Max Walker-Silverman’s debut feature, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to stellar reviews. “I’m not complaining, but I’ve never really had the luxury of choosing projects.

Let’s be clear: Romy and Michele’s Highschool Reunion is a modern masterpiece and is a brilliant feminist subversion of rom-com tropes from start to finish. Anyone who wants to hear why my favorite film is absolute perfection is welcome to pop round mine any time they like and we can stick it on.
One of the most fascinating elements, though, is the extended dream sequence which falls in the middle of the film as serves as a bit of surrealist comedy, a hinge point building up to the third act denouement of the reunion itself but also as a clever moment which hammers home the point of what this movie is, and crucially, what it is not.
To recap, Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michele (Lisa Kudrow) are on their way to Sagebrush High and get into a fight, ostensibly over Post-its and who is the “Mary” and who...

Having bagged back-to-back Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmys for her turn as firecracker Ruth Langmore on “Ozark” in 2019 and 2020, Julia Garner is currently tied with seven other performers as the third most-nominated actors in the category. Should she now nab a third statuette for the Netflix drama’s fourth and final season, she would enter Emmy record territory by tying Ellen Corby (“The Waltons”) at three wins — though Nancy Marchand (“Lou Grant”) would remain the category’s all-time leader at four wins.
Here are the seven people with whom Garner is presently tied as the category’s third most-decorated actors at two wins:
1. Bonnie Bartlett: “St. Elsewhere” (1986-87)
2. Tyne Daly: “Christy” (1996) and “Judging Amy” (2003)

This review of “Death on the Nile” was first published on Feb. 7, 2022.
When the 2017 redo of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” made a killing, that may have been a surprise, but no one should have been shocked that director-star Kenneth Branagh, his epic ‘stache like a furry face belt, and screenwriter Michael Green would head back to the whodunit queen’s Hercule Poirot library for another starry, swanky production.
You could even call their choice of follow-up a copycat crime, since an adaptation of “Death on the Nile” was also what followed the 1974 film of “Express.”
The 1978 “Death,” however, necessitated a change in Poirots (from I-won’t-play-him-again Albert Finney to first-of-six-times Peter Ustinov) even as it stuck to the story points and suspect roster of Christie’s 1937 tale of love, betrayal and homicide on a paddle steamer through Egypt.
And yet for all the ways Branagh’s lavish new “Death” deliberately,...

Academy president David Rubin and Oscar show producer Will Packer clearly enjoyed escaping from the anxieties of this year’s Oscars for one relaxed evening, as this year’s postponed Governors Awards finally unfolded the Friday before the big night Sunday, in a low-key alternative Oscar universe. These awards used to be presented at the main Oscars, but were cut back in 2009 after it took a full 45 minutes to give them out. Now the Academy Awards ceremony displays a montage of the Governors Awards presentation.
Usually the Governors Awards, voted on by the 53-member Board representing 17 branches, take place in November and function as a black-tie starting gun to Oscar season, while providing the Academy with a revenue-generating event, as studios buy tables and pack them with that year’s Oscar-bound talent. Perhaps I'm jaded on the idea of cinematic universes. I'm not sure why. I do love the MCU and the Dceu to varying degrees. The whole Universal monster thing would probably have delighted me if the films worked better. I've certainly loved every comic book crossover I've ever read. I'm wondering what soured me on this concept enough that, when I heard Kenneth Branagh (whose work I generally love) talking about a Christie-verse, I cringed hard.

After attending the Middleburg Film Festival in Virginia this past weekend, five-time Oscar nominee Kenneth Branagh earned a souvenir. His film “Belfast” won the coveted Audience Award for Best Narrative Film. He is the director-writer-producer behind a very personal nostalgic coming-of-age tale that’s being released by Focus Features on November 12. It stars Caitriona Balfe, Jamie Dornan, Judi Dench, Ciaran Hinds and newcomer Jude Hill.
The festival itself also bestowed him with a Director Spotlight Award during the four-day event. Previously, the ‘60s-era look back at the ongoing troubles in Northern Ireland that besieged his hometown also claimed Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award. Consider that all the nine previous winners made the cut for a Best Picture slot on the Oscar ballot..
Gold Derby chatted with Branagh at Middleburg as he talked about casting, making a movie during a pandemic and how he gently tweaked the story of his own childhood.

Uzo Aduba and Gillian Anderson could potentially join an elite group come September. Both actresses are on the cusp of pulling off the surprisingly rare feat of being the recipient of both a lead and supporting drama actress Emmy. Aduba, who won the latter award for “Orange Is the New Black” in 2015, is nominated for Best Drama Actress for her performance on HBO’s “In Treatment.” Meanwhile, Anderson, who won Best Drama Actress in 1997 for “The X-Files,” is nominated in supporting for her turn as Margaret Thatcher on Netflix’s “The Crown.” If both take home hardware on Sept. 19, they’ll become just the fifth and sixth women since 1970, when the supporting categories were standardized and became genre-specific, to have won in both fields.

Sven Hjerson, the debonair Scandinavian master detective invented by crime writer Ariadne Oliver, a character in Agatha Christie’s novels, will get his own series, set in modern-day Stockholm.
In “Agatha Christie’s Sven Hjerson,” Hanna Alström plays Klara Sandberg, a former trash TV producer who successfully pitches a true-life crime show starring Hjerson, who would solve a real crime each week. The new show may reset Sandberg’s career and life, but the only problem is that she has never met Hjerson.
The show stars Johan Rheborg (“Kenny Starfighter”) as Hjerson. It will be comprised of four murder cases and broadcast as four films and an eight-episode TV series in the fall of 2021.

“The Chess Game of the Wind” is a film whose actual story is at least as interesting as the movie itself. It only screened twice in Tehran in 1976, received extremely bad reviews, and after the Iranian Revolution, it disappeared completely, since the themes of homosexuality and feminism (among others) did not sit well with the Khomeini regime. However, it was rediscovered in a Tehran antique shop in 2015, and was presented back to its director, who managed to “smuggle” it out of the country. Eventually, it was delivered for restoration in Paris, overseen by Martin Scorsese’s non-profit organization, The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project, in association with the Cineteca di Bologna. (Source: The Guardian). Which makes even more interesting how Park Chan-wook watched and was inspired for “The Handmaiden”.

So you say you’re itching to watch a mystery - an old fashioned, pick ‘em off one by one whodunnit that ratchets up the tension until you’re begging the filmmakers to spill the beans? Well, consider that particular itch scratched. But believe me when I tell you that The Killer Reserved Nine Seats (1974) has different itches moving around for its whole running time, offering up gothic soap, incest, lesbianism, copious amounts of nudity, a bit o’ bloodletting, ghosts, and a goofy clear mask-wearing killer. The Italians have always been kitchen sink susceptible with their exploitation, and The Killer Reserved Nine Seats leaves nothing behind but the pipes.
Successful in its homeland, the film certainly has the tech specs afforded bigger productions; well shot by Giuseppe Aquari (Frankenstein: Italian Style), it features a large and attractive cast put through a Ten Little Indians scenario in an abandoned manor. If it already sounds very Italian,...

Quentin Tarantino has the upper hand in the Best Original Screenplay race. The groundswell started with the upbeat reception for Tarantino’s ninth feature opus “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” at Cannes, a Charles Manson-inflected 1969 Los Angeles fable starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. The auteur hit yet another original creation out of the park, with both strong reviews and global box office ($329.4 million).
This earned Tarantino his sixth Oscar nomination and could yield the Globe and Critics Choice screenplay-winner his third Original Screenplay win (after “Pulp Fiction” and “Django Unchained”).
The writers branch often rewards international auteurs like Bong Joon Ho, who scored his first Oscar nominations for the Cannes Palme d’Or-winner “Parasite” (Neon), a brilliantly comedic look at a lower-depths family of con artists who one by one infiltrate a rich family’s stunning hillside modern home. Inevitably, all hell breaks loose. The timely movie...

Many worthy people are still waiting and waiting for their induction into the Television Academy’s TV Hall of Fame. Each year a small committee makes the selection of just a few people to be inducted. You can visit their busts, statues and tributes at their plaza in North Hollywood, California. Our photo gallery above offers up 50 individuals who easily deserve to be include, so please take a look at these choices, esteemed committee members, and let’s induct even more this year.
The first induction was held in 1984 and it’s been an annual tradition almost every year. That class of legends consisted of actress/executive Lucille Ball, actor/comedian Milton Berle, writer Paddy Chayefsky, writer/producer Norman Lear, journalist Edward R. Murrow, CBS founder William S. Paley, and NBC founder David Sarnoff.
The most recent class from late 2017 featured the inductions of production designer Roy Christopher, producer/writer Shonda Rhimes,...

When Kristin Chenoweth won an Emmy in 2009 for the cancelled ABC comedy “Pushing Daisies,” she joked, “I’m unemployed now, so I’d like to be on ‘Mad Men'” (watch below). Chenoweth’s triumph was hardly the first time someone prevailed at the Emmys for a cancelled TV show, and that’s the one potential bright spot for “Roseanne” scene-stealers John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf following the show’s shocking cancellation. However, while Goodman and Metcalf are still in the running for Emmys, might the icky demise of “Roseanne” thanks to Roseanne Barr‘s racist tweets make the entire program toxic to voters?
Seeabc cancels ‘Roseanne’ following Roseanne Barr’s ‘repugnant’ tweet
Goodman is no stranger to prevailing at the Emmys for cancelled shows, doing just that for “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” a decade ago. He won Best Drama Guest Actor at the 2007 ceremony after NBC turned...
