The BBC’s financial deficit is projected to reach nearly £500M next year as the corporation delivers what it has described as a “transformational budget.”
Unveiling its Annual Plan this afternoon, which sets priorities for the coming year, the BBC forecast a deficit of £492M ($620M) for 2024/25, a sharp rise of 40% from this year.
Explaining the hefty jump, the BBC said its plan to grow BBC Studios “drives higher income” and “requires significant investment in 24/25, contributing to the group operating deficit,” while pointing out that this year will also include big expenditure on sporting events such as the summer Olympics and European football championships.
“Our financial plan includes a transformative approach to savings to enable delivery of our strategic ambitions,” it went on. “This will require a number of difficult decisions over the course of the year including one-off transformational costs. The BBC will look to further cost cuts, growth initiatives and transformation to help it fund its operations and public duties amid financial and sector challenges and return it to a financial surplus after a deficit that will balloon in the new fiscal year, the U.K. public broadcaster said in its annual plan and annual report Thursday.
Led by Director General Tim Davie, the broadcaster in its annual report outlined priorities for the new fiscal year 2024/2025 starting in April. “Our financial plan includes a transformative approach to savings to enable delivery of our strategic ambitions,” it said. “This will require a number of difficult decisions over the course of the year, including one-off transformational costs. If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur star Diamond White spoke with The Direct about Season 2 of her hit animated series and who she would want to see play the character in the MCU.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is a crazy concept for a character: A 13-year-old with one of the largest IQs on planet Earth who has a pet T-Rex—and, in the comics, the two can switch bodies.
Marvel’s incredibly animated series managed to do what many thought was impossible: make the character easily accessible, relatable, and insanely likable.

More than two decades ago, "Chicken Run" clucked its way onto the movie scene and became a runaway hit. The stop-motion animation movie was clever and strange, and unlike any of its contemporaries at the time (CGI-heavy flick "Dinosaur" and wacky Disney one-off "The Emperor's New Groove" bookended it at the year's box office). "Chicken Run" was also a surprisingly rich text, a movie that included plenty of moments of parody and humor meant to appeal to adults as well as kids.
The first movie functioned as a riff on "The Great Escape," the 1963 war film starring Steve McQueen, but the new sequel film, "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," chose a different parody path. In an interview with /Film, director Sam Fell confirmed that "Dawn of the Nugget" was influenced by heist films, so much so that it earned a pointed nickname during production. Jurassic Park A Dinosaur Phenomenon The Godzilla franchise has left an indelible mark on the monster movie genre, captivating audiences with its colossal creature and the mayhem it brings. A film that shares this grandeur is Jurassic Park (1993), which not only revolutionized the use of CGI in cinema but also redefined the concept of scale in storytelling. This Spielberg masterpiece brought dinosaurs back to life with such realism that it swept viewers off their feet, much like the mighty Godzilla. Jurassic Park, a film released in 1993, outgrossed many others during its re-release on National Cinema Day, proving that...

The exec producer behind BBC comedy-drama We Might Regret This has said his ambition was for a show starring and written by a disabled performer to be “at the very top table of creativity.”
The Office and People Just Do Nothing producer Ash Atalla, whose Roughcut TV outfit is making We Might Regret This in association with Village Roadshow Television, said there has been a tendency for British broadcasters to “use the dry slopes of smaller budget shows or ancillary channels as training progams” when it comes to projects led by disabled people.
Penned by Kyla Harris and Lee Getty, We Might Regret This, on the other hand, is being positioned as a bigger-budget primetime offering for the UK’s national broadcaster, which its backers feel could be a potential awards winner.

With this year being the 100 year anniversary of The Walt Disney Company and the release of their latest animated title, Wish, we wanted to know what animated Disney film has been your favorite over the years? We stuck to films specifically released by Disney, so no Pixar titles are included. What struck me while compiling the list is the progression of their films. For many of us, Disney films defined our youth, but which is the one that has remained with you all these years? Sure, the studio showed some footage from Disney's upcoming animated movie "Wish," and they announced that "Haunted Mansion" would be hitting Disney+ in October. But there was one other announcement that might be intriguing for anyone who is both a Disney fan and a physical media collector.
This fall, the House of Mouse will be releasing the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, which collects 100 animated films from both Disney and Pixar, reaching as far back as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and up through this summer's "Elemental" from Pixar. All of the movies come in a big three-volume set that unfolds in collectible storybooks. Disney just announced the release of the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, featuring 100 animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. It’s packaged together as a three-volume set that unfolds into your own storybook.
The set is festooned with original poster designs and comes with digital codes for every movie, alongside a lithograph from Disney’s upcoming feature “Wish,” a certificate of authenticity and crystal Mickey Mouse ears engraved with the “Disney 100” logo. The limited-edition collection will be available on Nov. 14, with pre-orders beginning on Walmart.com on Sept. 18. It has a retail price of $1,500.
What’s fascinating about the set is that it includes a wide array of classic Walt Disney Animation Studios features, along with beloved Pixar favorites and a smattering of films (many of them direct-to-video sequels to earlier masterworks) created by the since-shuttered DisneyToon Studios. That includes “Tinker Bell,” “Return to Neverland,” “The...

James Hawes‘ Holocaust drama “One Life” will be the American Express Gala at the 67th BFI London Film Festival.
The film tells the true story of Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to WWII, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England. It’s not until a live television show “That’s Life” surprises him with the surviving children – now adults – seated all around him that he can finally make peace with the loss he had carried for five decades.
The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Lena Olin, Romola Garai, Alex Sharp, Marthe Keller, Jonathan Pryce and Helena Bonham-Carter.
Hawes said: “This film pretty much begins and ends in London and says so much about the people of this city, its heart and its history.

65 is a movie about aliens crash landing on Earth during the age of the dinosaurs. Except that the aliens look an awful lot like they come from Earth, and the dinosaurs… don’t.
The dinosaurs presented in writer-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ film might have some recognizable body parts, and some may even bear a passing resemblance to a few of the bigger names from the My First Dinosaur book you had as a kid, but for the most part, the giant killer reptiles we see in that movie are monsters, nothing more, and nothing less. At one point there is a baby dinosaur that looks like a cross between a T-Rex and an Ankylosaurus, a species so far unknown outside of one episode of the Lego Jurassic World animated series. David Mitchell is returning to the BBC for genre-bending detective comedy Ludwig, which features on a five-strong comedy slate alongside Hulu co-production Dinosaur and a show from The Duchess star Michelle de Swarte.
Unveiling his first major comedy slate at this afternoon’s BBC Comedy Festival in Cardiff, the corporation’s Comedy Director Jon Petrie said the shows reflect “the depth and range of our offerings which champion British creativity.”
The slate is led by Ludwig, Peep Show star Mitchell’s first BBC project since Upstart Crow, which follows the eponymous protagonist as he takes on the identity of his brother, Dci James Taylor, who has disappeared off the face of the earth. Mitchell’s Ludwig lives in quiet solitude, designing puzzles for a living under his nom-de-plume, and he struggles to adapt to being a twin who happens to be a successful Dci leading Cambridge’s busy inner-city major crimes team.

The past few weeks we have seen some uplifting headlines as films such as Creed III and Scream VI coming out with franchise best openings. This week we have no such headline. The DC Extended Universe has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Unfortunately, this weekend represents one of those “down” weekends as Shazam! Fury of the Gods came in at a very underwhelming $30.5 million, putting it right in line with our predictions from Thursday, yet under the $35 million the studio had projected earlier in the week. That puts this sequel at around a 44% drop from the original films opening and that film actually had a budget about $25 million less than this one. To put an even finer tooth comb on it: Black Adam which opened late last year and was seen as a pretty sizable bomb, opened with just over $67 million.

If you’ve seen the marketing materials for “65,” Sony’s upcoming sci-fi action thriller, one thing is made abundantly clear: futuristic spaceman Adam Driver is in the muck, battling dinosaurs using a laser gun. And for most, that is all that you need to know about the movie, which is both written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, whose screenplay for “A Quiet Place” launched a hugely profitable franchise. Dinosaurs, space travel and a movie star fighting for his life make pretty good excuses to buy a ticket for “65.”
But if your mind is stuck on the big questions — Who does Adam Driver play? Why is a human being interacting with dinosaurs, a species that, as the title suggests, went extinct 65 million years? And is there time travel involved? — we have answers. Just be warned – heavy spoilers for “65” follow.
What is Adam Driver’s Deal?...

Dinosaur movies tend to be extremely popular at the box office, enough so one would expect them to have a shared universe by this point. Perhaps it's because the "Jurassic Park/World" franchise had held such a vise-like grip on the sub-genre these past 30 years, studios are hesitant to greenlight their own films about giant, prehistoric reptiles walking the Earth. Even when they do, they frequently employ animation to make the dinosaurs a little less daunting (including the carnivorous ones), like in Pixar's "The Good Dinosaur" or Disney's "Dinosaur."
Phooey to that, says Scott Beck and Bryan Woods! The "A Quiet Place" co-writers are ready to make dinosaurs terrifying once more with their new writing and directing effort, "65." The movie stars Adam Driver as a traveler who crash-lands on Earth 65 million years ago, pitting him and the sole other survivor (Ariana Greenblatt) against a whole lot of dinosaurs hankering for a tasty human sandwich.

The career of Adam Sandler has been frequently surprising. On "Saturday Night Live" in 1990, Sandler gained a reputation for playing a puckish, rude, doofus. It was a squeaky, occasionally explosive stage persona the actor would carry over into some of his mid-'90s comedy vehicles like "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore," and would go on to serve as the foundation of his production company. Any number of Sandler's comedy films are crass, prurient, and often venerate the bad behavior of their leads. Also, as a curious motif, Sandler's comedies often employ American pop culture iconography of the 1980s.
But then Sandler will occasionally startle audiences by proving himself as something beyond his usual "dip" persona. In "The Wedding Singer," Sandler emerged as a convincing romantic lead opposite Drew Barrymore. In "Punch-Drunk Love," director Paul Thomas Anderson tapped into Sandler's ever-present rage but balanced it with a truly disarming love story.

I never understood why Jurassic Park was the only dinosaur-related franchise to outlive the dino hysteria of the 90s. Don’t get me wrong, Spielberg’s classic is clearly the best movie to come out of that trend, but that doesn’t change the fact that dinosaurs as a concept are in the public domain and should have been featured in countless other films.
Fortunately for fans of all things prehistoric, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’s upcoming 65 (March 10th) promises a return to the Jurassic-Park-less thrills of completely original dinosaur movies. And with that in mind, we’ve come up with this list highlighting six of the best non-jp dinosaur thrillers for all your prehistoric media needs!

Move over diamonds; it seems like Dinosaurs are a girl’s best friend. At least, that’s the case for Lunella Lafayette (Diamond White) in Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Based on the comic book of the same name, the series follows Lunella, a Black 13-year-old Manhattanite who uses her genius to accidentally conjure up a giant red Devil Dinosaur (Fred Tatasciore) through a time portal she’s created. Luckily for Lunella, and the entire Lower East Side neighborhood, she befriends the prehistoric creature and uses their unique partnership to fight crime in the area under the moniker of Moon Girl.
Another unique thing about the animated show, brought to life by actor Laurence Fishburne and producer Helen Sugland, is that it makes Marvel history for featuring the first Black female lead character in a Marvel television show. Lunella’s onscreen debut further adds to the recent strides...

Odin’s Eye Animation has picked up sales rights to “Shimmy: The First Monkey King,” an animated family entertainment film that is rare official China-u.S. coproduction. Sales activity will begin at the European Film Market starting next week alongside the Berlin Film Festival.
The story involves Shimmy, a cheeky monkey with newly discovered superhero-like powers who must learn how to control his extraordinary transformative abilities and prevent powerful demonic forces from sending the universe into chaos.
The film is completed and previously envisaged a mid-2022 release, but those plans were derailed by China’s tough anti-covid measures. Delivery is now scheduled for April 2023 with a major Imax and conventional theatrical release pencilled in for June.
It was jointly directed by Ralph Zondag and Dick Zondag.

Legendary Entertainment is partnering with Caroline Fraser of HarperCollins Productions (Carmen Sandiego) to produce a live-action Danny and the Dinosaur film, based on the bestselling children’s picture book series by Syd Hoff.
HarperCollins Productions optioned media rights to the series from the Author’s Guild Foundation, which shares them with the Anti-Defamation League Foundation, Ort America, Inc., and the United Negro College Fund, Inc.
The original book, published by HarperCollins in 1958, follows a young boy and a dinosaur who set off on a series of wonderful adventures together after meeting at a museum. It was followed up by six sequels penned by Hoff, with the full set selling more than 11 million copies in 12 languages.

At last count, Disney Animation Studios has canonized 61 of their features. The central "Disney Canon" refers to an ill-defined section of the studio's animated feature output that, as far as one might surmise, serves as examples of the studio's preferred "house style." The Disney Animated Canon includes several animation styles and media, of course, but the 61 films in question are considered to be "official." Canonized Disney films cannot be co-productions, they must be pointedly toyetic, and are typically not auteur-driven. One might not be able to, for instance, recall the directors of "Cinderella" (1950) off the top of their head. Their names, incidentally, are Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, and Hamilton Luske. The trio also directed Disney's animated films "Lady and the Tramp," "Peter Pan," and "Alice in Wonderland."
For Disney, though, the company is the auteur, and weird, smaller projects tend to be excluded from the Disney Canon. "A Goofy Movie,...

Dinosaur movies have been around long enough that it can easily be stated that they’re a necessary part of cinema. These movies range from the most ridiculous ideas ever conceived to some of the greatest movies ever made, but combining prehistoric lizards with science fiction is not overdone yet. In the upcoming movie 65, it’s easy to wonder if such a thing will happen, given that slamming certain movie elements together sometimes provides a rather odd look into both genres. It might not be a good mix, it might not perform the way people want, and depending on the acting

Dark Crisis as an event has been a bit hit and miss, both the main series and the various spin-offs. It has, though, maintained a respectable entertainment level overall, and of course the end game of all this has been to bring back the Multiverse. I’ve always been a Multiverse fan, growing up reading comics in the late 1970s/ early 1980s when the Jsa Earth-2 were two of my favourite things in comics (and still are). This book looks tailor-made for me, throw in the fact it’s written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund, classic DC creators all, and we should have a winner. Hopefully.
Let’s take a look.

Exclusive: We are hearing from sources that Cattywumpus, the Gore Verbinski-directed animated movie about outer space felines, will be getting shopped around town to other studios.
Verbinski, whose films have grossed 3.76 billion and who won an Oscar in 2012 for the Paramount animated movie Rango, had been working on his latest film at Netflix.
Such is the complex nature of animated film production, where quite often halfway through, stories and plans can pivot. There’s a history of that from movies such as Pixar’s Soul and Dinosaur and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Cattywumpus repped Verbinski’s second animated movie after the Johnny Depp-voiced Western Rango, which grossed 246 million at the worldwide box office.
Netflix, we understand, gave the creative team the option to go shop the movie elsewhere.
Netflix has seen promotions and changeovers in its animation executive suite over the summer.
