Not quite Benny and Rochester, but close.

Warning: Spoilers
Chances are, that if a movie character actor was popular enough, they'd have their opportunity to appear in the lead of a movie short. That's the case for bespeckled Walter Catlett, best known for playing bumbling professionals who weren't always as bright as they thought themselves to be, and here, he's going down Hugh Herbert territory by "wooing" over and over in his effort to pretend to be sick to avoid social events he had no interest in.

Of course Catlett gets into more trouble because of his lies, unable to escape accusations of a crime that he had nothing to do with, proving himself to be not only a bad liar but an idiotic one. Like Jack Benny, Catlett has a black sidekick and confidante, loyal valet Clarence Muse who is obviously ten times smarter than his boss. Catlett and Muse make a great team, but seem to only have limited potential as stars of their own series.
