"Modern" kung-fu actioner with an all-star Hong Kong (and Taiwanese) cast.
InjunNose12 May 2006
Chen Sing, Shang Kwan Ling Fung, Eddy Ko Hung, Yasuaki Kurata, and Lung Fei star in "A Gathering of Heroes", which combines traditional hand-to-hand (and foot-to-foot) showdowns with shootings, stabbings, and in one case a log-bludgeoning (!) to hit you between the eyes with a stream of mindless, almost nonstop violence. The plot, involving revolutionaries who are simultaneously contending with government troops and a corrupt kung-fu school, is a little more complicated than it should be in a film of this kind, and yet handled in such a slack, indifferent way that the viewer really doesn't care what's happening. When I taped "Gathering" back in the mid-'80s (it aired on USA's "Kung-Fu Theater"), I couldn't be bothered to keep up with the dull intricacies of the story; there was just too much action to enjoy. The abundant fight scenes were choreographed in fine style by Leung Siu-lung, aka "Bruce Liang"--one of the innumerable Bruce Lee imitators who appeared in the wake of the Little Dragon's death. All you need to know is that Chen Sing, Shang Kwan Ling Fung (who looks great as always), and Eddy Ko Hung are the good guys, while Yasuaki Kurata and Lung Fei (among others) are the villains. Watch "A Gathering of Heroes" all the way through just once...and then replay the fight scenes over and over!

A Gathering of Heroes, Gan jin sha jue (1973)

A Gathering of Heroes, Starring Chen Sing is an excellent movie from 1972. It's takes place in the late 1800's, in China. Basically in the beginning you see Chen Sing on the train, attempting to rob, and steal treasure. (For good reasons) When he gets to the section, where the guy is that has the treasure, Chen Sing goes on a killing spree through bad guys, to get to the main one, when he finally does he see the treasure has already been stolen, and realizes that someone beat him to the punch. He is left with one clue, this little dagger, and finds it's a girl with the father. By the time he gets to her Yusoki Kuroto, (bad guy) has already killed her father, and she is a little freaked out I guess. End's up Chen Sing teams up with her, and they fight battles, and the whole what not. They both find out friends of there's are traitor. Chen Sing Plays such great roll. He can be bad , or good. Personally I like him the best when he is good. Like in The Bloody Fists(Deadly Buddhist Raiders,Death Beach), and kungfu the invisible fist, or A Rage of Wind, and Return of the kungfu dragon, etc.. He is talented, good looking (very), and has a big heart, but don't get him angry (lol).... Ali Jordana M
