Continuing our series of writers unearthing underseen films is a a rare romantic comedy that allows a black woman the chance to be happy
Historically, black women haven’t been allowed the luxury of fairytales. In the 90s and early 2000s, there was a modest sprinkling of romantic dramas and comedies like Love Jones, Jumping the Broom and Something New, but despite a more general resurgence of love stories in recent years, films that depict intimacy between brown-hued people remain scarce. Instead, black women have been hit over the head with sexist and nonsensical advice on why we’re still single and studies that suggest most of us will never get married. It’s only been in the last year or two that the narrative has begun to shift. Black women are reclaiming their romantic lives and telling their own stories.

Dog Eat DogI collapsed on my bed in the Hotel Cristal in Cannes, the curtains blowing in the breeze, just like in Roy Scheider’s room before he gets the piano wire in Marathon Man, and somehow managed to dimly fall asleep until the text function on my phone started quacking. It was the girl I love, in Los Angeles, texting to say, I missed my flight. I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry. What? Sorry? How can you even be sorry for missing a flight to Cannes—especially after I had added on a leg from Istanbul to Nice so she wouldn’t miss the opening-night parties? I was crushed. Heartbroken. We talked, but I knew it portended something bad. And I was especially pissed because this came a mere three and a half hours before my movie, Dog Eat Dog, was going to have its...

It's either an indictment of our current crop of action stars (or a reaction to them), but even pushing 70, Danny Trejo is still the go-to bad-ass in Hollywood. Ever since a chance encounter on a movie set landed him his first role, the unlikely leading man has been working steadily (his credits list 15 movies coming out in 2013 alone). And right on the heels of "Machete Kills," the equally unlikely fake-trailer-turned-franchise, the tattooed tough guy also has "Dead in Tombstone" coming out this week on DVD and on demand.
In the supernatural Western, Trejo stars alongside Mickey Rourke, Anthony Michael Hall and Dina Meyer (yes, of "Starship Troopers" fame), where he plays -- what else? -- a ruthless anti-hero brought back from Hell to avenge his death, and rack up some fresh souls for the Devil (Rourke) in the process.

When you interview Danny Trejo, it’s almost impossible to stay on the topic of just one film because of the actor’s constant drive and always growing filmography. If we’re to believe IMDb.com, Danny is currently slated to appear in 21 movies between 2013-2014, and that’s only what we know of. While talking to Danny, he mentioned at least one more film that wasn’t listed, so who knows how many times we’ll be seeing Mr. Trejo in the coming years. Most recently you can catch him in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming sequel Machete Kills, but I was there to talk about another project Danny is particularly excited about, and that’s the revenge Western Dead In Tombstone.
There’s an aura of badassery that Danny has become known for, playing rough-and-tumble characters like Machete, and he’s become somewhat of an action mainstay, but his...

Another Halloween, another direct to video horror movie that's probably better than 90% of what you're going to see in the theaters this month. Night Of The Demons, directed by Adam Gierasch (Autopsy), is a remake of the 1988 film of the same name (which eventually spawned two sequels of steadily decreasing entertainment value). The original starred 80's scream darling Linnea Quigley, who bared her breasts and entrails at every opportunity back when I was a lad. She was a delight, I tell you. The original film was completely idiotic, disgustingly tacky, and absolutely hilariously bad. It was a staple of mine as a young boy, and, well, might explain a few things about me today.
As is my wont, I digress. Kindly suck it.
Gierasch's remake isn't much better, but then, it's not supposed to be. Shot in 2009 with the intention of being a Halloween theatrical release, it was dumped into...

It's got Sly Stallone! Arnold Schwarzenegger! Stone Cold Steve Austin! Er … Jason Statham! The Expendables has the beefiest cast in movie history. But who's the hardest of the hard men?
Sylvester Stallone had a dream, and that dream was to assemble the biggest cast of grunting, macho, unfeasibly ripped movie lunks in cinema history. A few twirls of his Rolodex later, he'd recruited Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, chopsocky killer Jet Li, Guy Ritchie's best facking mate Jason Statham, action legends Arnold (née Arnie) Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis in cameos, as well as lead roles for three ripped and raw American sport stars: ex-gridiron man-beast Terry Crews, wrestling lunatic Stone Cold Steve Austin and mixed martial arts human brick Randy Couture (please don't tease him about his name).
If you are a certain kind of man, just reading the cast-list of The Expendables will make your testicles explode with excitement.

Danny Trejo, known for his muscle bound tattooed body and chiselled bad looks, finally gets some real documentation to answer some of the questions audiences have been asking themselves for years. His countless appearances (something over 100 by now) in films and his reputation for tough guy characters, has earned him the well-deserved respect as a hard worker on set and true-to-life actor. It’s clear from the start that the term type-cast shouldn’t even become a question with Trejo, who at the age of 25 had no acting abilities, other than the life experiences he brings with him. His face alone is like a canvas, every crevice a different story, every scar a different tale and it’s for these unique features that he was able to secure a nice spot within Hollywood as the tough guy. In Joe Eckardt’s 2005 release Champion, Trejo recounts his struggle for redemption against his troubled life involving drugs,...

Bad news for those hoping New Line's remake of the brilliant Spanish-language horror movie The Orphanage would just go away, as the studio has just found a director to make it a reality. Actor-producer-director Larry Fessenden has signed on to helm the film. Produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, the 2007 film was centered on a woman who, upon returning to the orphanage where she grew up, discovers that her son's imaginary friend is the same person who terrorized her when she was a child. Fessenden previously helmed the indie horror flicks Wendigo and The Last Winter. Last year he directed an episode of the horror anthology series Fear Itself. As an actor he has appeared in Broken Flowers, Animal Factory, The Brave One, I Sell the Dead and the upcoming Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever. Though recovering from a bit of a cold, this self-proclaimed Twilight fan and film enthusiast was earnest and open about his work. After a couple of weeks of constant Twittering, and the widely known win in a bet with Rob DeFranco, Facinelli is still working out the details on how to handle the prize. He is still "just trying to figure out what to do for the day [June 30th] because I want to try and do some kind of charity event. I thought it might be a fun way to actually make it into something meaningful." While the day might already include the very charitable donation of Facinelli's own actor's chair to one lucky Twilight fan/Twitter follower, Rob DeFranco's Hollywood Boulevard...

Michael Barker, Tom Bernard and Dylan Leiner from Sony Pictures Classics acquired the film from Cinemavault Releasing in Canada and Spc is set to release Steve Buscemi's battle of wits between the sexes this coming July. Based on the late director, Theo Van Gogh’s film, Interview is also part of a planned trilogy of Van Gogh remakes - Cinemavault should be shopping Blind Date and 1-900 at Cannes and/or the fall festival season. This is set in present day New York City, Pierre Peters (Buscemi) is a fading political journalist who at one time found success as a highly respected war correspondent. - Lonesome Jim moves at a deliberately slow but tolerable pace. It’s one of those films that critics will not appreciate much because it isn’t challenging enough for an American director and it’s hard to find a reason why a film like this should be made. Well this film is for anyone who has tried and failed, which is probably more than have tried and succeeded. So it’s undoubtedly identifiable. It’s about a writer and it’s for writers, filmmakers, actors, musicians, chefs, whoever, who had to try and find something else that made them happy when the daily grind of trying to “make it” becomes too hard to deal with alone. Lonesome Jim is autobiographical and it is not afraid to be. The screenwriter is James Strouse and the character is named Jim who is a writer. The whole script was set in

Reservoir Dogs star Edward Bunker has died in hospital in Burbank, California from complications after surgery to improve circulation in his legs. The 71-year-old diabetic was a habitual criminal in his youth, who turned his life around by writing about his experiences and then became an actor in later life. As well as playing hardman Mr. Blue in Reservoir Dogs, Bunker also portrayed a criminal in the remake of this year's The Longest Yard.
