THE VIEWER STAYS AT A DISTANCE
J. Steed25 August 1999
The personal style of Petra Wagner is already evident in this her first feature film, but still not that controlled as in her later "Oskar und Leni". But the main problem with this film is that it is hard if not impossible to get involved with two main characters, two brothers of whom the youngest is out of communication with the world. Neither the acting boy nor Wagner can bring this boy any closer to the viewer and a certain irritation about the boy develops during watching as it is never clear whether he is out of communication because of simple recalcitrance or psychic shock; thus his last destructive deed is meaningless, as no solution was found to convey his inner thoughts: looking at some pictures is not enough.
