"Zoolander 2" didn't have the best debut back in 2016. The sequel to Ben Stiller's 2001 comedy classic made just $55 million worldwide on a $50 million budget. Considering movies generally need to double their budget in order for the studio to start seeing a return on investment, that isn't all that great. Such a poor box office showing was made worse by the critical response, with the film currently sitting at a dismal 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. Indeed, /Film's review criticized "Zoolander 2" for being as stupid and out of touch as Derek Zoolander himself.
There was no reason why "Zoolander 2" needed to be as bad as it was, though. The sequel reassembled the stars of the original, with Stiller joined by Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell. Like its predecessor, the film also featured multiple celebrity cameos, including one particularly distasteful turn from Benedict Cumberbatch as a non-binary character. Okay, maybe there...

We live in a golden era of sci-fi on TV, where "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" come in multiple flavors, "Stranger Things" is an event every season, and the CW recently wrapped up an entire universe of DC Comics superheroes on the small screen. Fortunately for all sci-fi fans, this is a time where the people who make such shows grew up loving them, and critics who review them were raised on the concepts and get it. This is all a relatively new phenomenon.
As recently as the '90s, TV critics weren't necessarily big on high-concept sci-fi, and the people making these shows didn't always know what they were doing either. Even if they did, producers over their heads weren't necessarily making the best decisions either. Superheroes on TV were entirely different three decades ago, and the weekly format was just discovering the notion of season-long arcs. There were growing pains to be sure,...

Update: It looks like we were right about this one, with the trades officially confirming today that the War of the Roses “reimagining” with Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman is a go! Both Cumberbatch and Colman will also be attached as producers through their own production companies. There is no news yet about when it will start shooting, but realistically, the earliest we’ll see it is the end of 2025.
Original Post: Let’s get ready to rumble. Marital woes can get ugly. A couple of years ago, the public became enthralled with the defamation trial between former married couple Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, where things got ugly. It was such a competitive public thrashing between the two stars that Alice Cooper would joke that Depp and Heard should star in a remake of The War of the Roses. Cooper, who is friends with Depp, told him, “I have a great idea.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman will star in “The Roses,” a reimagining of the 1989 classic “The War of the Roses.” The dark comedy, which is currently in development, will be directed by Jay Roach (“Bombshell,” “Meet the Parents”) and is written by Tony McNamara (“Poor Things,” “The Great”) based on the novel by Warren Adler.
The film follows picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman), who have successful careers, great kids and an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentment that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.
“‘The Roses’ is a wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story,” said Searchlight president Matthew Greenfield announcing the project. “With Jay at the helm, and Benedict and Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team bringing it to life.”

As Hollywood agencies and production companies increasingly turn to artificial intelligence to evaluate screenplays, a group of writers and creatives have come together to design a so-called barrier against the incursion.
Shane Black (“Iron Man 3”), Jim Herzfeld (“Meet the Parents”) and Akela Cooper (“M3GAN”) are among two dozen industryites who collaborated on the development of a new tech platform, dubbed the Gauntlet, in an effort to keep humans assessing screenplays at the gate-keeper stage rather than AI.
ScriptHop, a Hollywood tech company founded by former UTA story department head Scott Foster and tech entrepreneur Brian Austin, is launching the Gauntlet Tuesday with 30 freelance script analysts from such high-profile companies as HBO and Lucasfilm, becoming the largest organized group of professional readers in the industry.
ScriptHop advisory board member and screenwriter Herzfeld came up with the idea that sees screenwriters pay a $380 fee to run their script through a “gauntlet” of professional story analysts.

As far as Hollywood comedies go, Ben Stiller’s name is synonymous with some of the funniest films in the industry. His unique brand of humor and dialogue delivery has gained him a loyal fan base while also making him one of Hollywood’s A-list stars. Stiller also proved that he is an accomplished director with blockbuster films like Reality Bites, The Cable Guy, and Zoolander.

As is the case with many celebrities in the industry, the Meet the Parents star has also missed out on the opportunity to be part of a few prestigious films, some of which have gone on to attain cult status in Hollywood. In particular, Stiller expressed his deep regret on rejecting the offer to direct the Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting featuring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Scott Stuber, the film chief at Netflix, is leaving the streaming service in March. He’ll (again) form his own company.
Stuber will stay with the streamer through the middle of March, a person with knowledge of the plan told IndieWire. The former Universal Pictures executive and Bluegrass Films principal has overseen the acquisition, development, or production of Netflix’s biggest movies; the list includes “Red Notice,” “Bird Box,” “Hustle,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “The Adam Project,” “The Gray Man,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The Irishman,” “Marriage Story,” and “Roma.”

Scott Stuber is leaving Netflix. The chairman of Netflix film since 2017, he will be leaving in March to start his own media company.
This has been in the works for some time, as rumors were rampant he had a different philosophy than Netflix toppers, whose prime focus has always been to make premium movies to be consumed by streaming. Other streamers have evolved into a theatrical first window for many of their big budget films, as Apple did in securing traditional distributors to globally release films like Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon. While Netflix has acquired some posh theaters in qualifying cities like New York and Los Angeles, its business plan is mainly global streaming without the giant P&a spend needed for films to do big movie house grosses.
Stuber will stay to help the transition, and then Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria will oversee things until a permanent replacement is secured.

Scott Stuber, who pushed Netflix to expand into blockbuster movie territory, is stepping down from the streaming service’s top film job to form his own media company.
Stuber will remain with the streamer until March, at which point Netflix Cco Bela Bajaria will temporarily assume his role while she searches for a replacement. Bloomberg first reported the news.
Under Stuber’s direction, Netflix’s feature business aggressively entered the blockbuster space, courting filmmakers such as Zack Snyder, the Russo brothers, Michael Bay and Rawson Marshall Thurber. The era began with the Will Smith starrer Bright, the 2017 film that had a reported budget of $90 million, a hefty number that turned heads at the time but would soon look quaint compared to what was to come.
Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, cost somewhere in the $250 million to $300 million range, while the Russo’ Gray Man cost in the $200 million range.

Sorry About Your Wife, Reuben: Filmmaker John Hamburg Looks Back on 20 Years with ‘Along Came Polly’
It’s been 20 years since senior Model Un delegate Polly Prince wandered back into the life of unlucky-in-love insurance adjuster Reuben Feffer.
Jennifer Aniston charmed the pants off Ben Stiller’s persnickety everyman as the chaotically seductive title character in “Along Came Polly”: filmmaker John Hamburg’s raunchy odd coupling about a New Yorker who catches his wife (a perfectly loath-able Debra Messing) cheating on him with a scuba instructor (a hysterical and jacked Hank Azaria) during their tropical honeymoon. Back in the city, with the misguided help of his friend and former child star Sandy Lyle (the late Philip Seymour Hoffman at his funniest), Reuben runs into blast from the past Polly, who may or may not be the real love of his life, just two weeks later.

Axelrod was featured on the ABC soap for 40 episodes between 1987 and 1989. He had previously made guest appearances in Kojak (1977), Hill Street Blues (1984), Dallas (1983), The Judge (1986), Dynasty (1987), Outlaws (1987) and Night Court (1989).
“I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with him in his last years, as he had no immediate family,” representative Jennifer Garland said in a statement to EW. “We spent much time outdoors, where Jack loved to sketch, read news articles, and recite Shakespearean sonnets.”
Following his stint on General Hospital, Axelrod went on to play Arnie Zimmer on three episodes of Knots Landing between 1989 and 1990. Guest appearances would follow on shows like Murphy Brown (1992), Everybody Loves Raymond (1999), Boys Meets World (1999), Good vs Evil (1999), Jack & Jill...

Ending the year in signs is the hilarious, adventurous, sharp-tongued era of Sagittarius.
There’s truly nothing like them. They are quirky, mysterious and full of life. While they naturally grab the attention in the room, they feel most comfortable when they’re in their lonesome.
Sagittarius is the jack-of-trades sign; the sign that takes up space in every all industries — whether they be an actor, comedian or a bus driver — their versatility allows them to do it all. And that flexibility helps fuel their “I’ll try anything once” mindset. To them, what is life if you’re not living it to your fullest? The only thing you have to beware of is their slick mouth. Between Sagittarius, Virgo and Aries it’s hard to tell which sign is more brutally honest. Truly, to know Sagittarius is to love them. And if you don’t love…it doesn’t...

Crashing Eid is a 2023 Saudi comedy series starring Summer Shesha, Hamza Haq, and Khalid Alharbi.
“Crashing Eid” is a comedy about cultural differences, this time between London customs and those of Saudi Arabia, with the classic plot of a couple from different social backgrounds and his acceptance into her environment.
This comedy aims to provide more of a social perspective while offering entertainment, without necessarily being hilarious.
Simple in its cinematography, the screenplay revolves around the interaction of characters surrounding the announcement of the wedding. It presents numerous cultural differences for this Netflix series, which arrives without making too much noise.
And, if we’re not mistaken, it may not garner much attention from the audience.
What can we find in “Crashing Eid”?

Gwyneth Paltrow's name has become synonymous with both Hollywood's A-list and the contemporary wellness industry, but did you know that she's actually a nepo baby? Paltrow's mother is Blythe Danner, who starred in "Meet the Parents" and "Will & Grace," among many other well-known projects. Her father, Bruce Paltrow, was a director and producer who happened to also be best friends with Steven Spielberg. Paltrow, to her credit, has seemingly wholeheartedly embraced the nepo-baby title; when InStyle posted a photo of Hailey Bieber wearing her "nepo baby" T-shirt, Paltrow wittily commented "I might need a few of these."
Her parents first met while working on a Broadway show in 1969, per People. They tied the knot in 1970 and welcomed Paltrow in 1972 and her brother Jake in 1975. Paltrow, of course, went on to follow in her mother's footsteps, becoming a megastar and later launching her company Goop. She also was married...

Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller once collaborated for the 2000 blockbuster comedy hit Meet the Parents. But if it wasn’t for De Niro, the film might not have spawned any more sequels.
Robert De Niro made sure Ben Stiller would do a ‘Meet the Parents’ sequel Robert De Niro | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Stiller’s version of Meet the Parents saw the comedian portray a devoted boyfriend trying to win over his girlfriend’s parents. De Niro portrayed the girlfriend’s strict father. At this point in his career, De Niro was seldom seen in comedies. He appeared in the lighthearted romp thanks to the film’s producer Jane Rosenthal, who first made De Niro aware of the script. Still, the Oscar-winner had a few misgivings about the story before fully committing to the project.

As global streamers like Netflix and Amazon Prime finally make inroads in Africa, Nigerian-Canadian filmmaker Lonzo Nzekwe is enjoying his moment in the sun at the Toronto Film Festival.

The film, with a script 12 years in the making and shot in Canada and Nigeria, marks a triumph for Nzekwe, who like fellow black Canadian filmmakers long had his work neglected, ignored or dismissed before a Canadian industry reckoning after the murder of George Floyd finally diverted meaningful local financing to underrepresented creators.

Adam Devine appeared on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast during his press tour for Netflix’s “The Out-Laws” and shared his theory that Marvel movies and other superhero films killed the traditional Hollywood comedy. The “Workaholics” and “Pitch Perfect” alum noted that because Marvel movies rely so much on humor, they ended up becoming Hollywood’s new de facto comedy films.
“You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a fucking comedy,” Devine said. “Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There’s still good [comedy] shows, but movie comedy…it’s hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it. Adapted from the 2015 novel by Katherine Center, Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners” largely takes place in the wilderness, where different kinds of people are forced to bond while braving the elements as they hike the Appalachian Trail. Led by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” alum Ellie Kemper, the gaggle of goofballs provides laughs of all kinds as well as some heartfelt moments.
Zealous camp guide Bennett (Ben Cook) keeps everything interesting, especially when he scolds Helen (Kemper) for her careless mistakes on the hike and praises Jake (Luke Grimes) for all of his perfect moves in setting up and taking down camp. Nico Santos and Gus Birney even more humor to this romantic comedy story.
Here’s who plays who in “Happiness for Beginners”:
Helen (Ellie Kemper)
Ellie Kemper portrays Helen, who wants to start over after she divorces her husband. She experienced infidelity and a miscarriage during their marriage.

Steve Spielberg Once Shared That He’d Cast Jim Carrey as Chief Brody in ‘Jaws’ if He Remade the Film
Steven Spielberg’s 1975 horror feature Jaws is largely seen as one of the filmmaker’s greatest achievements. Roy Scheider, who played Chief Brody in the film, had a critical role in the movie’s success and longevity. But if Spielberg revisited his iconic feature today, he would’ve tapped Jim Carrey for the role.
Why Steven Spielberg would’ve cast Jim Carrey in ‘Jaws’ Steven Spielberg | Sean Zanni/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images
The closest Carrey came to a true collaboration with Spielberg was with the comedy feature Meet the Parents. According to Irish Examiner, the Ben Stiller movie was originally supposed to star Carrey and be directed by Spielberg. But the two would soon drop out of the project due to scheduling issues.
Still, Spielberg apparently kept a close eye on Carrey’s career. Carrey was not only a gifted comic, but he cemented himself as an impressive dramatic actor as well.

Like the chicken and the egg, it’s hard to know what came first for the new Adam Sandler-produced Netflix feature, The Out-Laws: Was it the title or the concept?
My gut would lean toward the former, so much does this watchable if forgettable crime comedy feel like an entire movie wrapped around a simple play on words. In case you somehow missed it, imagine for one second that your mysterious in-laws arrived in town on the brink of your wedding and turned out to be “out-laws.” Get it?
As silly as that sounds, the out-laws in question, played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, manage to carry the concept to a few fun places, mostly because their characters — a pair of bank robbers named Billy and Lilly — truly look like they don’t give a shit. My gut would lean toward the former, so much does this watchable if forgettable crime comedy feel like an entire movie wrapped around a simple play on words. What if you managed a bank, and your fiancée’s folks turned out to be notorious bank robbers who saw their prospective son-in-law as the perfect patsy for their next hit? Not a bad setup for hijinks and hilarity. That’s what the filmmakers behind “The Out-Laws” are hoping, anyway. Produced by Adam Sandler (among others) and directed by Tyler Spindel, the not-so-original Netflix original plays like “Meet the Parents” crossed with “Fun with Dick and Jane.” Seeing as how the former inspired several sequels and the latter a remake, the situational comedy on offer is hardly fresh, though it still could (and should) have been funnier.
As Owen Browning, Adam Devine takes the mantle from Sandler to play a schlubby everyman partnered with a gorgeous woman (Nina Dobrev) out of his league. Naturally, he’s kind-hearted and willing to sacrifice all for his one true love. And that’s...

Stiller and Rock got together for the animated series Madagascar. One of the reasons Rock enjoyed doing the films was to team up with Stiller himself.
“It was getting back with Ben. We had fallen out,” Rock once told Collider.
Stiller agreed, and shared that watching Rock work was one of his favorite parts of doing the movies.
“Honestly I was impressed with Chris because we did work together one day and I love him in the movie, outside of being a friend of his I find the character of Marty very entertaining. To watch Chris do his...

In a studio overlooking Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, Rian Johnson is strapped to a lie detector machine. Next to him at the controls sits Natasha Lyonne, twiddling the device’s knobs with all the sinister intent of a supervillain. This photoshoot tableau is, of course, ripped right from the Meet the Parents Ben Stiller-Robert De Niro interrogation scene. Next, in an homage to the pithiest of TV detective tropes, Lyonne will pose at a typewriter, fake-talking into a rotary-dial phone. The visual nod this time goes to Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote.
In fact, the late, great Lansbury is connective tissue for Johnson and Lyonne. Lansbury and Lyonne appeared briefly together in Johnson’s film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, on a Zoom call playing the mystery game Among Us with Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc.
