Tagline: "Thou Shall Not Let A Witch to Live." The Reckoning is the latest horror film from United Kingdom director Neil Marshall (Doomsday). His latest is set in the year 1665, when the Great Plague is still ravaging Europe. Meanwhile, witch burning is the norm. In the chaos, a widowed mother is targeted for persecution, after rejecting the advances of a landlord. This title stars: Charlotte Kirk (Ocean's 8), Cal MacAninch (Calibre) and Ian Whyte. A concept poster (left) and early still were released for the film late last year; now, two more stills are available, showing more of the cast. Director Marshall has talked about the film a few times, since 2019. At The Sun, he talked about actress Charlotte Kirk's challenges working on set: "she's literally being doused in water and tied up to torture devices and persecuted on a daily basis." This was not an average shoot for any of the filmmakers.

Neil Marshall’s The Reckoning Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
The first part of this year's Fantasia International Film Festival was announced today, including opening film The Reckoning, the latest thriller by Neil Marshall, which is set against the backdrop of England's Great Plague and subsequent witch hunts. It stars Charlotte Kirk and Sean Pertwee and will be the second Fantasia opener for Marshall, whose The Descent was the headlines 15 years ago.
The festival will celebrate 45 years of Troma with Lloyd Kaufman's take on The Tempest, his second stab at Shakespeare after Tromeo And Juliet in 1996. Other highlights include Lucky, the second feature by Imitation Girl director Natasha Kermani, which will remind you to play it safe and wear your mask because you won't want to be the person without one, plus Chino Moya's Undergods, which journeys through a fantastically decaying Europe and employs the talents of Geza Rohrig and Kate Dickie.

Fantasia International Film Festival finds itself in the unlucky position of being at the end of the summer, when it’s unclear if theaters will be open and big festivals will be able to continue. So, in April, the organization announced that the festival will be a virtual event, following in the footsteps of other film events. And now, we know the first wave of films that will make up this year’s virtual Fantasia Fest.

Atx Television Festival had a stacked panel for Disney+’s The Mandalorian with show creator, executive producer and writer Jon Favreau as well as show directors Dave Filoni, Deborah Chow, Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard and Taika Waititi.
From the get-go, Favreau had an idea of how he wanted to frame the Star Wars spin-off. Says Favreau in the pre-recorded panel: “It was specifically doing a version of Star Wars that felt small and felt like it reflected the genres that influenced George [Lucas] originally: space adventure, westerns, samurai films, WWII adventure films — those are the genres that inspired the tropes.”
He added, “These were at once original, but also a reflection of our cinematic past.” He wanted to give the world a new set of characters for those who do not have the Star Wars history that many fans have. He wanted the show that could invite people into this universe.

Cicely Tyson has already claimed three Emmys, two for “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” in 1974 (Best Movie/Mini Actress and Actress of the Year) and one for “Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All” in 1994 (Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress). But despite four Best Drama Guest Actress nominations for “How to Get Away with Murder,” she has yet to triumph for her turn as Ophelia Harkness. Might she, at long last, bag one for the show’s sixth and final season?
A 15-time nominee, Tyson looks safe to scoop up her 16th career bid, currently topping our early combined odds. The only year she was left out for “Murder” was 2016 for its second installment — but she was on the same ballot that year for “House of Cards.” Considering the latter netted eight acting citations that year, five of which were for guest actors, it’s probable that Tyson split her own vote.

It may seem like a lifetime ago with the way 2020 is going, but back in January, disturbances felt in the Force regarding the Disney+ Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff series proved accurate after it was temporarily shelved as a search for new scripts commenced. However, it now appears that—in this unlikeliest of times to get good news—the wheels appear to be moving once again, with Disney having found a new visionary scribe for the small screen effort.

Have we ever given Paul Bettany the credit he deserves? One thinks back to his stellar turns in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Reckoning, and Dogville. No major awards consideration, instead a plump superhero role in the world’s most successful franchise. In Alan Ball’s Uncle Frank, Bettany appears more comfortable than he’s been in years.
Set in 1973, young Beth Bledsoe (a great Sophia Lillis) speaks of her love for her Uncle Frank (Bettany) in voiceover. “He was the only adult who looked me in the eye,” she tells us. Frank is well-read and lives and teaches in New York City, a million miles away from the Bledsoe’s hometown of Creeksville, South Carolina. Frank is kind to all, though his family regards him at a distance. After he gives young Beth some cogent advice, we skip four years to find her living...

Call it Internet fandom or a runaway sense of entitlement, but it seems there’s a petition for everything – and we really mean everything – in this day and age.
Whether it’s removing the rat from Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning crime drama, The Departed, to Pokémon Sword and Shield spurring a White House petition, as aggrieved Nintendo fans called on the Powers That Be to stop sales of the latest Pokémon title. Nope, we don’t quite understand that one, either.
The latest petition – or, should we say, demand for a petition – is more worthy of your attention, though, as it comes from Taika Waititi himself, the prolific director who will soon be making his way back to the McU for Thor: Love and Thunder.

The Mandalorian's first season finale is upon us, and happens to be the first episode since the theatrical release of Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker.
Of course we want to discuss that, but as this is TV Fanatic, let's focus, people! (Though we soon shall hopefully be discussing the new rumored Darth Maul TV show -- Yasssss everybody shake your baby-Jedi maker!)
The Mandalorian Season 1 Episode 8 continues exactly where The Mandalorian Season 1 Episode 7 leaves off.
I'm a little torn on this one because the combat scenes were pristine examples of beauteous television violence. But then the way the finale ended was a bit anti-climactic for me -- and predictable.
Let's break it down a bit.
I suppose we need to grieve Kuiil since they do not show him surviving Episode 7's ordeal. But just because they don't show something don't make it fact -- not yet anyway!

The season finale of The Mandalorian draws near and with it, Dyn Jarren and the Child find themselves in a difficult situation with the remnants of the Empire.
“Chapter 7: The Reckoning” saw Mando gather a team to face off against an Imperial army led by the Client. While the show prominently featured standalone stories that depicted Mando traveling across the galaxy and accepting jobs as a bounty hunter, the latest episode brought a number of characters from before to fight against the threat of Imperial forces that are searching for the Child.
One of these lovable characters is an Ugnaught known as Kuill who not only fixes the Ig-11 droid unit to help against the Empire but also reveals an interesting piece of information about Baby Yoda, shedding some light on the character’s mysterious background and also settling a major fan theory that’s been circulating online for the past couple of weeks.

A review of this week’s The Mandalorian, “The Reckoning,” coming up just as soon as I offer you a libation to celebrate the closing of our shared narrative…

But even a lot of classic Adventure of the Week series structured themselves so that the last episode or three of a season was a bit more serialized, making the whole feel bigger than the sum of the parts...

The Mandalorian has largely featured standalone episodes that see its unnamed protagonist (made easier by people nicknaming him Mando) traveling the galaxy on jobs and protecting the internet’s latest cuteness obsession Baby Yoda. However, the early-airing latest outing breaks out some continuity as a number of previous characters are brought back, ending with an emotional, heartbreaking final shot.
“The Reckoning” begins when guild broker Greef Karga convinces Mando to return to Navarro and free it from the control of the Client, the mysterious crime lord who originally hired him to retrieve Baby Yoda and was angered by the betrayal. To face the Client and his men, Mando gathers individuals he previously encountered, including the former shock trooper Cara Dune and Ugnaught engineer Kuiil, who also retrieved the shell of droid bounty hunter Ig-11 and reprogrammed it out of its murderous tendencies.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read on if you have not watched the first seven episodes of Disney Plus’ “Star Wars” spinoff series “The Mandalorian.”
After two or three episodes that felt like “The Mandalorian” was in cruise control, Chapter 7, ominously titled “The Reckoning,” kicked proceedings into hyperspace.
Mando returns to Nevarro, the scene of his daring escape from Episode 3, to settle his fight with the Guild and finish off the Client (Werner Herzog) once and for all. But this time, both sides have brought some significant reinforcements. Mando manages to persuade Cara Dune (Gina Carano) and the curmudgeonly Kuiil (Nick Nolte) to join him on his perilous mission, however, Greef Carga’s (Carl Weathers) estimate that there will only four token stormtroopers guarding the Client is a little optimistic.

The Mandalorian has introduced Star Wars' newest Imperial villain, Moff Gideon. Here's what we know about him so far...
This Star Wars article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian.
The Mandalorian has featured no shortage of baddies for its armor-clad protagonist to contend with, but the season's penultimate episode might present the Mando's toughest challenge to date: Moff Gideon, who is played by Giancarlo Esposito. You might recognize Esposito as Gus Fring from Breaking Bad, but here he's an intimidating Imperial warlord, dressed in black and ready to exterminate the bounty hunter scum on Nevarro, as well as anyone who fails him (as the Client quickly learns).
While we first got a glimpse of Gideon in the trailers for the show, episode 7 and 8, appropriately titled "The Reckoning" and "Redemption," give us our best look yet at the villain, as he arrives on Nevarro in a brand-new Outland Tie...

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Episode 7
Sometimes, tropes are good. The Mandalorian delivered its best episode yet this week. Cara Dune and Kuill are back, and with relationships established and stakes clear, the characters seamlessly support an eventful, engaging episode.
In “The Reckoning,” directed by Deborah Chow and written by Jon Favreau, Mando receives a message from Greef, the leader of the Bounty Hunters' Guild. He’s alive and he’s supposedly on Mando’s side now and planning to take down the Client. Mando doesn’t trust him, so he gathers allies: brawler Cara Dune as muscle and Kuill the Ugnaught to take care of Baby Yoda. The plan doesn’t go as expected, even when you’re expecting double crosses.

[Editor’s note: The following review of “The Mandalorian” contains spoilers for the seventh episode, “Chapter 7: The Reckoning.”]
“Chapter 7: The Reckoning” is the best episode of “The Mandalorian” yet and avoids almost all of the issues that have plagued the Disney+ series’ last few installments. There’s an engaging, high-stakes premise and the episode features instantly-recognizable “Star Wars” elements without resorting to blatant nostalgiac pandering. The characters are likable, convincing, and play off each other. The action is quite brief, albeit satisfyingly visceral, and the shocking twists are actually shocking. It’s a superb slice of westernized sci-fi and a much-needed breath of fresh air that will leave viewers rabid to discover what happens next week in the season finale.
The episode opens with the Mandalorian, Aka Mando, (Pedro Pascal) receiving a message from Bounty Hunters’ Guild head Greef Karga (a hammy Carl Weathers), who offers a deal that would clear Mando and Baby Yoda’s bounties.

New Line is reviving its “Final Destination” franchise, which has been dormant since 2011, and has tapped “Saw” screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to write the sixth installment.
The five films grossed nearly $700 million worldwide between 2000 and 2011. Unlike most horror franchises, the antagonist was Death as an unavoidable fate manifesting itself in a myriad of ways. In the first “Final Destination,” a high school student played by Devon Sawa has a premonition the plane he’s about to board will explode, leading to several passengers being left behind before the plane actually explodes. The survivors are then killed in a series of bizarre accidents, such as Kerr Smith’s character being crushed by a neon sign.
New Line’s most successful recent movies have been in the relatively low-cost horror genre. Those include the adaptation of Stephen King’s “It,” which hit $700 million in worldwide box office, and in the “Conjuring” universe,...

In what’s sure to be one of many films that probe the depths of the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal, Barry Avrich’s new documentary “The Reckoning: Hollywood’s Worst Kept Secret” gets the stories of some of his accusers and the journalists who followed what led to the #MeToo movement.
Among those featured in this first trailer for the film are #MeToo-era accusers Lauren Sivan, Katherine Kendall, Melissa Sagemiller, Starr Rinaldi, Rebecca Corry and journalists Kim Masters and Margaret Wente. They share their personal stories about dealing with Weinstein and how he impacted their respective careers.
“It was allowed to go on because he had so much power,” Sivan says in the film. “If he was some schmuck in the mail room, he’d be in jail.”
