The Greatest Episode of The Greatest Show In the World
rusties2 January 2004
Simply, absolutly amazing. Simpsons even bows down to this episode. Like, wow. If you liked the show you'll love this episode.

Plot- To take over the world, Pinky and the Brain travel to the north pole to rig toys Santa will be giving out to children. I'm not going to tell you how it goes, but every part is an instant classic. From lines such as

"The Brain: Where Canadian elves... eh" to the cheapshot jokes they take on Bill Clinton (AND THEY ARN'T EVEN SEXUAL RELATED!)

See this as soon as possible. A great Christmas special.

A Funny, Cute, Heartwarming, Touching, and Heartfelt Holiday Tradition!
RKerekes13-15 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
It's Christmas Eve, and Brain tries to put his latest plan into action: create mind-control dolls of himself, sneak them into Santa's workshop, and have them delivered to families around the world so that the dolls can work their magic and turn all the human beings into his obedient slaves. However, upon reading Pinky's unsent letter to Santa which states that Brain only wants what's best for the world and never gives up on trying, he is suddenly very touched and purposely succumbs to sentiment. Yes, once he has actually taken over the world, the Christmas Spirit takes hold of him and he gives it all back. Abiding to Pinky's wish on the letter, Santa does, in a way, give Brain the world.

I'm afraid I must disagree with planktonrules. The only reason anybody may think that Brain being full of holiday "gooey" goodness is because they don't know good character development when they see it. Again, right when the Brain has the world in the palms of his hands, he gives it up in the spirit of Christmas. I know for a fact that that concept there is decent character development and it shows that Brain does indeed have a softer, sweeter side. This episode deservedly won an Emmy! Forget "It's a Wonderful Tiny Toons Christmas Special"! Don't miss this Christmas special! It will really bring you into the Christmas spirit!

Amazing and beautiful. This is how you do a Christmas episode.
manigran26 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This is the best Christmas special of a TV show that I have ever seen. Christmas specials, and films, for that matter, tend to be overly sweet and sentimental. This, however, was a genuine episode that took the series to a whole new level.

The episode, of course, has all the classic humour that we expect from Pinky and the Brain. From the moment it started, I was already laughing at the clever lines and Brain's previous attempts to take over the world on Christmas. However, the brilliance of this special comes through in the second half.

Before this special, the episodes were primarily carried by humour and Brain's plans. Apart from Pinky's stupidity and Brain's intelligence, there was little characterization. However, in this special, we see that there is more to these characters. Through a heartfelt letter to Santa, we see Pinky as a selfless character who only wants Brain to be happy. Despite being insulted and bopped on the head all the time, Pinky loves Brain like a brother. He may be stupid, but he has a heart. In addition, we also get development of Brain. Touched by Pinky's love, Brain reveals his softer, sweeter side. His tears come just as he is one moment away from taking over the world, and he gives it up as his love for Pinky comes through. Seeing Brain actually give up the world was a major step for the character, because it showed that Brain is not a heartless villain. He still has the ability to care for others, and he loves Pinky.

A Pinky and the Brain Christmas fully deserved its Emmy. Future TV shows should learn from this Christmas special.

In the latest attempt to take over the world, Pinky & the Brain travel to the North Pole to send out these dolls that will hypnotize people into letting Brain take over the world. Like the Pinky & the Brain series, this special is filled with witty and hilarious jokes. Don't miss this one. It's a holiday hoot.

Christmas with Pinky and the Brain
TheLittleSongbird4 October 2018
Love animation to bits. It was a big part of my life as a child, especially Disney, Looney Tunes, Hanna Barbera and Tom and Jerry (with tastes broadening further getting older with Pixar, Studio Ghibli and some of the more mature animations out there), and still love it to this day as a young adult whether it's film, television or cartoons. Actually appreciate it even more now, with more knowledge of the different animation styles, directors, studios and what work went into them.

'Animaniacs' always was one of my favourite animated shows. So is its spin off 'Pinky and the Brain', which is on the same level and almost surpasses it. Found it brilliant, extremely well made, cute at times and very funny and actually hilarious frequently as a child. Still think all of that as an adult, and even more so with more knowledge of animation and understanding the humour more. 'Pinky and the Brain' is like 'Animaniacs', it has something for everybody and children and adults alike will love it, it is so much more than "just another kiddie show" and should never be dismissed as such.

"A Pinky and the Brain Christmas" is one of my favourite 'Pinky and the Brain' episodes. When it comes to Christmas specials on television series, this episode is an example of how to do it well, having all of the characteristics that makes the show so brilliant while showing more depth to Brain and his relationship with Pinky.

The animation quality is terrific, at this very early stage the animation is actually better than it was when 'Animaniacs' first started with the character designs being more attractive here. The setting is an atmospheric one, credit is due making a quite confined setting interesting which "A Pinky and the Brain Christmas", and the whole of 'Pinky and the Brain' for that matter, does really well. The characters designs are smooth and not stiff at all, the backgrounds are very rich in detail and the colours are a mix of vibrant and atmospheric (having been throwing this word a lot recently but can't help it).

Similarly great is the music. The scoring is dynamic and cleverly composed, adding to the actions, expressions and gestures and doing what good music scores in animation should do in enhancing them. Then there is the theme tune, which is hard not to forget.

'Pinky and the Brain' throughout its too short run was always superbly written. That can be seen here in "A Pinky and the Brain Christmas". It is such smart writing, at its worst it's very funny, at its best it's not just hilarious but riotous. It is full of zaniness, wit and surprising intelligence and has references that will delight adults especially as they are more likely to get them, while having some educational parts for children. The exchanges between Pinky and Brain are masterpieces of how their personalities and way of speaking contrast so well with each other.

While somewhat formulaic (all the stories in 'Pinky and the Brain' are, but in structure, the concept was actually very original), this and all the show's episodes is a not so common example of formulaic not being a bad thing and not mattering at all, because of the cleverness, creativity and idea variety of the writing and storytelling which are nowhere near as silly as one would think looking at the premise. One worries about repetition, no worries are needed because there is a lot of freshness and variety to stop that from happening. Some of the content here is outrageous, but endearingly so (the outrageousness and creativity of Brain's plan was part of the show's charm and intentional, as is not being surprised by the outcome of Brain's plan), but it is from start to finish very engaging, lively in pace, clever and always structured coherently, being not being too complicated for children and not too simplistic for adults. Being a Christmas special and having the Christmas spirit "A Pinky and the Brain Christmas" actually does stand out among the rest.

Other than the writing, especially good are the characters. Pinky and Brain were two of the best characters on 'Animaniacs', Brain stole the show whenever he appeared, and more than deserved their own show. For me they are even more interesting and defined and one can see that here already. It is hard not to endear to Pinky and his inane comments and actions, he is very stupid and one can see why he frustrates Brain. But he is one of the finest examples of stupid not falling into the trap of being obnoxious, a trap often fallen into, Pinky instead is very funny and often hysterically so and simply adorable, one has to admire his spirit and perseverance.

Brain is slightly more interesting, he is the infinitely smarter one of the two, a genius in fact, although also the meaner and more intricate one, a very large contrast. Somehow though he is still very lovable, it is impossible not to fall in love with his scheme here and how he goes about it, nor is it impossible not to love his deadpan personality and dark sarcasm. The two have such compellingly real personalities and one can see here even early on some development and there is more to them under the surface. The chemistry between the two is just a delight, fun and sometimes antagonistic but there is more substance to it than that, being essentially the heart of the episode and the show it was important for it to work and it has always been one of the greatest assets.

There is though a different side to both Brain and his relationship with Pinky. Loved how he shows a softer and caring side and that there is much more to their relationship/chemistry than is seen usually and that there is much more under the surface. Doing all that without distorting Brain's personality too much, actually giving him more dimension, or being too out of sorts with the show's premise. There is a lot of heart and warmth, and it is very charming and moving to watch. Didn't think it schmaltzy or overly-sentimental personally.

Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche, two of the best and most prolific voice actors around that time and in the voice acting business overall, are flawless providing Pinky and Brain's voices. They sound like they were having a lot of fun and give Pinky and Brain so much life and also surprising depth, their voices suiting the characters and their personalities perfectly. If they recorded the voices together, one can really feel the bond between them. The other voice actors are also great.

In conclusion, absolutely wonderful. 10/10 Bethany Cox

A Nearly Flawless Episode for a Nearly Flawless Show
PinkyPrincess19939 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, just wow. I don't have any words for how I can describe this magnum opis of an episode. It's just astounding to behold and I was so surprised when I first watched this. I was laughing at almost every joke, the voice actors are so talented at everything they do and all the emotions they showcase here, and the ending had me in literal tears. I recommend this episode to every fan of this show and if you love emotional climaxes, then you'll love this.

The animation is superb and expressive, managing to capture the emotions of the characters very well. It's also very fluid with very little lag or awkward motion. TMS absolutely nailed it and they should have animated more episodes for the spin-off.

The story is purposefully written to deceive views into thinking it will be typical Pinky and The Brain affair, with a world domination plot failing at the episode's conclusion. The beginning and middle of the episode keep up a lighthearted tone with humorous Christmas antics between the two mice. While somewhat standard in the franchise, this time, the tone of the first two-thirds of the episode is purposefully misleading in order to make the last part more powerful.

The ending is hands-down one of the best conclusions to a Christmas special I've ever seen. When Brain reads Pinky's letter to Santa, the raw emotion in this scene is unmatched. In one 3 minute sequence, Brain goes though so many complex emotions: the sadness of when he reads Pinky's letter and realizes its importance, the guilt he feels that he disregarded his closest companion and his feelings, the anger when he decides to break his own contraption due to the entire situation. It's all portrayed with such realism, to the point where I believe that the delivery of the dialogue is what makes this scene so tear-jerking. And when Brain breaks down sobbing and wishes everyone a merry Christmas, I was crying along with him; it just hits you so hard in the feels and the emotion seeps from the screen

Another important part from the ending is the last minute or so of the special. Brain gifts Pinky a spellchecker (very thoughtful) while Pinky gives him a tiny globe keychain. The moment when Brain unwraps the gift and smiles is one of the most wholesome moments in the entire series. It just shows how much the duo really care for each other and that Pinky does want Brain to take over the world. The globe keychain's symbolism is wonderfully obvious and it has become a staple item for many fans.

The characters are as great as they always have been. Brain never becomes too unlikable and remains consistently hilarious throughout. The emotions he goes though at the end also never stray away from his core personality, while also being an important piece of character development for him. Many people fail to understand the Brain isn't as tough as he seems. He has a soft side, though sometimes some force is needed to let that part of him shine through. This episode manages to fit in a major amount of character development in the span of only 22 minutes, with Brain finally realizing how much of a terrible friend he's been. Pinky also is just an amazing character with so much love to share. He wants only the best for his friend, and he's even willing to give away all his presents for his friend's happiness. Even though some moments could be considered inane by many, he has great intentions behind his actions such as wanting to spread joy or to help others. Also, he is really funny with a majority of his lines being absolute riots.

As a Pinky and The Brain fan, I enjoy basically all of the duo's adventures. But this episode is very special to me. This episode gets me in the holiday spirit and makes me want to be generous and kind to the ones I love. This Christmas special won an Emmy and it needs to be seen to be believed. It is nothing less than a masterpiece in the realm of animation and of Christmas specials. This does not deserve to be forgotten; it should be upheld with the holiday special greats. Please, even if you're a fan of the show or not, go watch this episode. I hope you won't regret it and will treasure it as much as I have.

One of the few misfires in the early history of the show
planktonrules23 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
"Pinky and the Brain" was a wonderful cartoon series--one of my favorites ever. However, I am not a "Kool-Aid drinker" who automatically says that EVERY episode was gold and that the show was perfect. I have Pinky and Brain statues, stuffed figures and even a commemorative plate--so I am obviously a fan. But, I still will admit that the show didn't always deliver. However in the first season as a stand-alone show, the only serious blunder I can recall is this Christmas Special.

So why is the Christmas special a failure? Well, because the Brain did something he'd never have done before--succumbed to sentiment. This was so unlike the character and so schmaltzy--something I hate and one of the main reasons I normally loved the show. In this special, once the Brain actually took over the world, the "Christmas Spirit" took hold and he gave it all back because he was so full of holiday gooey goodness. YUCK!!!
